Thankfully I have never needed to use it before but I was wondering if someone has before (paid 3% protection fee then did not receive their product and sought restitution via PayPal). Just wondering how much of a pain it is.

Never did a dispute for a transaction, but dealt with their customer service a few months back. Someone hacked my PP account cleaned out my checking account ( >$8k ) in multiple $300 transactions. Paypal was awesome to work with and refunded all the cash to me. Two thumbs up! (y)(y)

I've been on the seller side of it for an eBay transaction. I have never initiated it.

Regarding my transaction. It was quite fair. The buyer claimed that the item was not as described... several months after receiving the item. My rebuttal included the positive feedback that the buyer gave me. I actually won the case.

If you're the buyer you're 99.5% chance to win. If you're the seller you're 100% to lose.

I had a transaction where the buyer wanted a refund and opened a case. He wanted the refund because he bought a collectible item when it was hot (imagine this years hot Christmas toy)... the value quickly fell... he realized he could open a case, get a refund, and buy cheaper. He won... So in general, I agree with the above.

I had a dispute, I also used my credit card and challenged it through them first and I won the claim.

I bought some chips from a very new member that was kind of questionable. So I used my CC. The chips did show up, but he said PayPal was making him wait 5 days to release the funds. Asked if he refunded the money if I could send it FF from a bank transfer, I was willing to help him out, he refunded the money, and it showed as being “processed” on my page so I sent the money FF. Well he did withdraw the funds already and there wasn’t any money to cover the refund then.

It took 2 months to get it resolved. I think the main reason I won is that the guy never replied to any of the requests from Discover.

Did a dispute a few years ago through PayPal and eBay for a dress I ordered for my SIL. It came from China and didn't look like the one pictured so I returned it. PayPal required a tracking number to make sure the item made it back to the seller. The address was something crazy and usps doesn't provide tracking for international shipping. Needless to say we lost the case.

Anyone order from Wish.com  :ROFLMAO::ROFL: :ROFLMAO:

I currently have an open claim with Paypal. I am the buyer. Bought a slot machine from a guy in California, advertised as working (works great!), original parts. It was shipped in a cardboard box with ZERO padding -- needless to say, it arrived damaged, and no longer works.

I have a claim with FedEx and with Paypal, hoping to win one of them (easier to give money back if I win both). So far, nothing but silence from both.
I did use my credit card via Paypal. Maybe I should initiate a claim with them too.

I'll be super pissed if I lose this...that damn thing cost me an arm and a leg!

Ugh, that's gross. On what basis did he claim his case warranted a refund?

Well, call me a 0.5%'r then.

I was in a PP dispute that originated from this very forum. I sold some chips to someone who ultimately said I shipped him 22 chips instead of 150 chips. Later his story changed to 0 chips. Oh... and he used racial slurs and other profanity IN HIS OFFICIAL DISPUTE TEXT ON PAYPAL'S SITE. :wideeyed:

PP ruled in my favor but it helped that the buyer sunk his own ship.

Thanks for all the input everyone! It's a lot more comforting hearing from others who've gone through the process than just reading the boiler plate guarantees on the PayPal website.

Please keep sharing your experiences as I'm sure this thread will help others in the future.

Went through it a couple months ago. Won easily. Seller was a complete nut job. I Should probably post the eBay conversations on this website. I'm sure everyone would get a kick out of it. lol

Go through your credit card company. I had way better luck with them than through PayPal when I had a dispute.

No longer wanted the item... just wanted to return it like you would at K-Mart. Problem is as the seller, I can only resell it at current market value. Had it sold to the second highest bidder at the time I would have been much better off... real gross.

I no longer sell on eBay.

What a total BS reason. Totally exploitable too. Buy a bunch of fad items from unsuspecting sellers. If the price continues to rise, sell them for a profit. If the price goes down, return them. Or, hell, buy up a boatload, sell what you can for a profit, and return the rest as the fad wanes. Pretty sweet freeroll. You'd think that eBay and/or PayPal would have enough of a clue about these things to not make it so easy.

AFAIC, you should only be able to return something you won at auction if it was materially misrepresented or damaged due to seller's negligence. Half the point of an auction is that it's a final sale. If you want to be able to return your stupid Hatchimals or Fingerlings due to buyer's remorse, buy them from a very forgiving retailer like Walmart or Amazon or whatever.

I always take extra photos that I don’t use as a seller in the eBay listing. Then I take more photos of the item before I ship it, during the packaging process, and again more pics with the postage paid and address clearly visible before it leaves me for good.

Tracking is given as well.

Never had any issues

Exactly... speculate on the price of gold... return if it goes down... total free roll.

Sorry I didn't mention why I created this thread yesterday but now it's probably obvious:

I didn't have any hard evidence other than noticing low prices and him using a picture of the chips from a sale he completed last year. I paid the 3% protection fee and have since opened a claim with PayPal (and called my credit card company). PayPal noted they will give the seller 10 days (November 17) to respond. If they do not respond they indicated I will be refunded.

@nezara paid F&F and mentioned PayPal would not let him dispute the claim so he has contacted his bank to stop payment noting that because it's an international payment it hasn't likely cleared yet for the seller. I would suggest anyone else in this position do the same ASAP.

I will update this thread with any updates I hear from PayPal or the seller.

Anyone involved may want to post their updates here..
Paid via paypal friends and family (1/4 of total from my paypal balance and the rest from my bank)
currently in contact with my bank's disputes dept (funds were already debited from my account).

All jokes aside the recent influx of scams is very concerning and hopefully doesn't erode the trust which the classifieds is based on.

I agree with @johnjohn that Paypal is trash from the 90s and we should find a better payment solution going forward.

@liftapint so sorry to hear about your issue. It boggles my mind that someone would sell something worth surely a few grand and then not package it securely...seriously wtf. Hopefully through the process you are not required to send it back. If the machine is still in ok shape but just doesn't work maybe you can get someone to repair it for a few hundred bucks.

Back in the early 2000's I sold a brand new mother board on eBay for a couple hundred bucks that ended up in a buyer dispute on PayPal. The motherboard was never used, I just ended up changing the direction of my PC build and no longer needed it. The box wasn't sealed, but the anti static mobo bag still was.

This was well before cellphones but I was still diligent in taking tons of photos with my point and shoot camera at the time. I took photos of the motherboard in the anti-static bag in its original box, being packed, and finally dropping off the labeled package at the post office. It was the first time I went overboard with the photos, and to this day I really don't know why I did, but it saved my ass...

About 10 days after I shipped the item I got the dispute notification from PayPal. The buyer claimed the motherboard had "water damage" out of the box, "was clearly used" and "didn't work." Where he really screwed himself was in the specifics - he said there was an "obvious coffee stain" on the mother board where coffee had spilled and dried, and included a photo.

I sent a detailed response to PayPal with all of my timestamped images, sat back, and waited. Within 2 days PayPal ruled in my favor and closed the dispute. The buyer obviously opened the motherboard, sat it on his desk, and spilled coffee on it before installing it. He then tried to get a refund for his own screw up.

The lesson here is take photos, and some more photos, and then some more photos, when selling stuff online. Without those images I'm sure PayPal would've ruled in his favor, and I would've been out a couple hundred bucks.

Update - my bank has issued a provisional refund of the amount ($805 - approx 3/4 of the total payment made to Julien) to my account while they dispute the AHC transaction
Paypal balance used - $297.. reporting fraud issue to paypal.

Update - dispute case opened with paypal for the transaction.. it's friends and family so don't have too much hope for the $300, but do believe I'll be successful with the $805 from my bank

Update in this thread...

Once I got a PayPal block confirmation, he responded within 10 mins
