Let's Talk Grilled Cheese (1 Viewer)

campbell's tomato soup is awesome! and i also prefer it half milk/half water, so good call.
With milk, it's usually called cream of tomato.

Using just water, with a tablespoon or two of tomato paste whisked in, it's even deeper red and richer in tomato flavor..

And if you're adventurous, make your grilled cheese on a waffle iron -- the variation in crunch is amazing!

Oh man... Now you're speaking my language. Here's my ultimate grilled cheese sandwich:

Step 1: Bake up a loaf of sourdough:

Step 2: Slice bread
Step 3: Butter outside of the bread
Step 4: Add 4 slices of cheese in the following order: Muenster, Sharp Cheddar, Muenster, Sharp Cheddar
Step 5: Place on a piece of parchment paper and toast on the lowest setting of a toaster oven. Flip and repeat toasting on the other side. Repeat, if necessary, until bread is golden brown and delicious and cheese is melted.
Step 6: Devour;
Step 7: Repeat steps 1-6 as needed.

Grilled cheese and tomato soup (campbell's) was a staple of my high school lunch experience. Love it to this day. Didn't even know that buttering the pan was an option... I always and I means always butter the bread. Will use any cheese available but cheddar is better! Also pretty much any bread is suitable but plain white "Wonder Bread" is a nostalgic experience.

Also dipping the grill cheese in the tomato soup... chefs kiss!!

@Hammer2171, for sure.

He's lose his mind at Grilled Cheese in Cleveland, eh, @Rhodeman77? My recollection is that most the the sandwiches are melts, by the strictest definition.
He makes a valid point though :)
I was pissed face drunk when I made my rant, but I think he was just hangry because he hadn’t had a grilled cheese that day.
But on the grilled cheese. A nice havarti and Gruyère cheese makes a mighty fine grilled cheese, and the tomato soup to go with gives a sweet flavor to cut through the saltiness of the sandwich. I honestly don’t like tomato soup, but will gladly eat it with a grilled cheese sandwich. Any pastrami sandwich fans out there, you’re not doing it right unless you have the pepper beef flats, get that fast food drive through Kruse pre sliced, pre cooked pastrami outta here :wtf:

I don’t like the bread too greasy. Any tips? I was going to try actually lightly toasting it first then using very little butter.

Butter, not margarine. I also butter the pan because it limits the amount of butter making contact with the bread. However, I've had many sandwiches that weren't greasy that were buttered directly on the bread.

It has come to my attention that nearly everyone loves the simple grilled cheese sandwich. If this is not a thing outside North America, you are really missing out.

Although the sandwich is simple, the methods of preparation are nearly endless.
  • What type of bread do you use
  • Butter the pan or butter the bread
  • Butter, olive oil, or margarine
  • Type of cheese - or is it anything in the fridge
  • Shredded cheese or sliced
  • Low and slow, or relatively high heat
  • Pure cheese or added ingredients
  • Chips, soup, or something else on the side
Here's mine:
  • Usually wheat bread, but prefer thick cut Italian
  • Butter the pan
  • Butter - I've tried olive oil, but went right back to butter
  • any cheese in the fridge
  • Shredded cheese
  • Low and slow - don't burn the butter!
  • Almost always added ingredients Hot pepper powder or @Darson Hot Sauce
  • Tomato soup on the side
It exists in the underground French poker world @BELGRADE He knows how to do it.

Are you planning to greet me with one in Toms driveway? Don’t spill the soup on your way out!

I like a "hard" bread with my grilled cheese, so that means plain white is out, and even regular wheat is a no-go. Rye is good, Sourdough is good, even a multi-grain is ok. Definitely prefer butter over mayo.

As far as cheese goes, I'm up for most any, and love to mix and try different variations. That said, Land O Lakes Yellow American is the goat.

no Canadian Black Diamond is the goat and you know this

Bread- whatever we have available, usually whole wheat, although I’ve found potato bread makes tasty sandwiches
Butter the bread
Butter most of the time. On occasion I have used the garlic butter stuff that comes with your Papa John’s pizza. I know that stuff is not “real” butter, but the garlic flavor gives it a nice taste
Anything in the fridge, mostly American, provalone, Muenster, cheddar. I have used pepper jack on occasion
Sliced cheese
Low and slow
Sometimes just cheese, but sometimes add deli meat, ham or turkey
Tomato soup on the FTW!

Most any bread will do, but I prefer fresh white bread or sourdough, definitely butter (not margarine) on the bread, ideally with cheddar cheese griddled low and slow and pressed in the pan.

I may be the only one that dislikes tomato soup - tastes like warm watered down ketchup to me  I like my grilled cheese with chicken soup or a bowl of chili.

2nd on the Chili! cream of tomoto is ok, regular tomato is -EV. Chili, however, is top top.

Y’all enjoying sandwiches with a condiment on it. Me, I love some mustard sandwiches, mmmm.

Gimme a break. It’s still a sandwich, but barely. Put some meat or a veggie in there. Live a little.
cheese is not a condiment; it's a way of life

oh and this..

I'm not picky on bread and cheese types as I find the technique dictates the sandwich more. Grilling the inside of the bread first is a must for me.

Also LOL at Ramsey's grilled cheese.

Nice to see hot sauce being an essential ingredient :)

This is probably a childhood thing but when I was very young my parents had no money so we didn't have a toaster or sandwich maker. But we did have one of these clam type toasted sandwich devices. You have to butter both sides of the bread otherwise it'll stick and you "toast" them over an open flame. There's something special about the burnt edges and the gooey center. My mum would make a mix of shredded cheese mixed with black pepper, finely diced onion and green chillies. I'm salivating just thinking about it.

I bought these a few years ago to recreate the memories but I need my Mum to come visit for true nostalgia.
