I Quit My Job To Play Poker AMA (3 Viewers)

My graph since I started at the end of September.

This month has been pretty swingy for me, partly due to shitty variance (flop top set, nut flush draw and 80% favorite over weaker flush draw and open ended straight, he binks the miracle on the river) and about $1500 of my losses are my own fuckups (two spots where I hero called because I was on tilt, one spot where I decided I wasn't content breaking even on the session and decided to swing for the fences and made a bad call)

Been on the upswing recently so turning January around at least

Can't tell if win graph or EKG from playing poker professionally.

in the vein of the great thread by @Bmeister51 who plays way beyond any limits I can touch, wanted to do something similar. Many of you probably already suspected it given the amount of posts I've had in the "show us your live stacks" threads.

But I quit my job to play live poker for a living, ask me anything!

Good luck man, wish you well. I'm coming up on retirement and seriously considering the same once I get out of the military.

So over a month in how many hours have you put in?

I started at the end of September last year, so been doing it for a bit. Unfortunately my last session was this past Sunday, caught a terrible bug and my wife is sick now too so we've just been drinking lots of fluids and resting, ugh. My head was pounding the other day, now my chest hurts, ugh.

Closing in on 500 hours, had a weeklong bug last December too, getting tired of these disgusting people who don't wash their hands and come to the casino sick spreading their disease. Had a guy the other day wearing latex gloves while he played, I might need to start doing that and one of those surgical masks as well, can't really afford to be losing a week of production every fucking month :(

Hope you feel better soon Anthony. Unfortunately touching filthy chips and being around disgusting players comes with the territory.
I’ve gotten the sniffles and itchy throat on many occasions at certain casinos. Certain ones seem to be much filthier than others.
I try to wash my hands at least once an hour and never touch my face after handling casino chips.
Get well my friend.

All of this is so true. I learned that little disgusting kids eventually turn into big disgusting adults at the casino. Both "professions" have me watching some disgusting things happen and I always feel like I'm fighting something as a result despite the OCD in washing my hands all the time.

For me, one of the other things I dislike about Tunica is the smoke filtration is terrible which can also impact how I'm feeling if I'm spending 30-40 hours in a long weekend there.

I remember some of the stuff I saw at the WSOP, as people bolted from the shitting stalls to get back to their table. No washing, just straight out the door. It churned my stomach. I now have a mini-bottle of hand sanitizer to use as a card capper/reminder to not touch my face/hand cleaner. With the current coronavirus threat, I have considered a mask for my next vegas trip, but I hate to be "that guy".

I always have hand sanitizer in my bag when I play and when I'm at the WSOP I always take an airbourne every morning with breakfast. So so easy to get sick. Plus those chips are always gnarly...

Here's my graph by session since I started in September of last year. not giving specific profit numbers but I definetly like the direction it's been moving lately

January was a much swingier month for me, went on tilt one day and made two bad call downs, and then another day I decided I wasn't content with breaking even and took a gamble I normally wouldn't against an aggro player because I decided I "wasn't going to be pushed around"

These deviations from my normal approach cost me around $1500 in January, but I'm glad I recognized them and I'm making adjustments to avoid doing it again

My uptick started near the end of January where I pulled out of a 4k downswing and turned a profit, and February has been similar to December, where I have made more than my monthly nut in the first week of action, so anything else is just cream :)

Nice work sir

@Anthony Martino Looking at your graph, the slope of the line is obviously positive, but in the spurts it looks like there are a few times where you've had multiple losing outings. Do you play at the same casino all the time? Do you use the graph for any other analysis outside of just money management? How much detail do you put into the data analysis aspect?

At the end of the day I just care about my hourly and bottom line

That graph is sessions, but if I play three games in a day it's counted as three seperate sessions, so I may win 2 and lose 1, for instance

Edit: i only play at two properties

Have you ever gone on a real extended downswing in your life as a poker player? Are you rolled to handle 9 months of breakeven or 3 months of losing in the games you're in?

I have not experienced 3 straight losing months or 9 months of breakeven before.

I set aside 6 months of living expenses and then a bankroll just for poker.

Fortunately a great 1/2 PLO game has been running regularly with a max buyin of $500 (used to be $300) that I've found extremely easy to beat, which extends my roll significantly over the 2/5/10 game. Plus I don't have the ego where I need to play the highest stakes, I just want to make as much money as easy as possible.

That being said, if my roll was cut in half or my living expenses cushion was, I would return to work at least part-time and then play semi-pro for the remainder of my income.
