Thinking about this for a heavily themed set that will have significantly different imagery for each chip. I see this recommended often enough but I’m curious to see if there’s any debate on pros and cons and didn’t see something explicitly on this topic.

Curious also to see examples that folks particularly like. Do you like the demon side to have just the number? Or also carry over some theme elements?

I think it’s totally fine. Also helps if the colors are traditional.

I have a set and frequently play at a game that has no denoms on either side and we have zero issues.

is this a cash or tourney set? Care to share the color denom breakdown?

Totally fine, I've done it for the first time on my imminent tourney set...

Tournament set. These denoms right to left

T25 red
T100 white
T500 green
T1000 yellow
T5000 black

I’m making this for a friend who is a real social guy. The idea is to make each denom a different “venue” in a fantasy entertainment empire. So a sports arena, a speakeasy, a dancehall, etc.

I’d want to carefully use common graphic elements to tie them all together but there will be a lot to fit onto each inlay and separating the denom to its own side seems like a way to get a lot of extra space. I think the denom side could then also have the location and something like “A Name’s Entertainment Inc. Venue” to tie them all together that way too.

The Hitching Post hot stamped tournament set is one side denom, one side logo. Not a problem (just the $2000 orange causes some confusion)

When we're studying them here on the screen, I don't care for it - I think chips with two different sides make for a splashed pot that's too busy; it just feels sloppy to me. But (like most things we overanalyze here) when I've actually played with chips like that, it doesn't matter at all. Assuming there's enough clay showing to easily distinguish between chip denominations. If you have some giant inlay aberration that covers most of the clay, the jury is out.

not really a fan of denomination on just one side
Just an exampe, this old chip from an Italian casino (denominated in old Italian Lira)

When euro was introduced, they put a small denomination in the other side... I prefere this solution, the back in old chips was too "muted" IMHO

Also loved the Wasp stuff. This feels like a great use case for it.

Huh I actually would think a tournament is easier because people are much more focused on the denoms with coloring up and blind changes.
Cash chips are so universally well known that $5 is red, $25 is green and $100 is black (atleast to people I play poker with).

Tourneys are much more volatile. I see people make accidents frequently at tournaments with denoms on both sides lol but hardly ever at cash.

But I wouldn’t let it stop you from doing what you are! I think it’s great!

My semi custom Oasis Cardroom hotstamped Desert Palms chips are one side denom the other side custom stamp. Never had a problem and one of my group’s favorite sets.

Another data point: I use the IOC Bossier City T1 set for my low-stakes cash games. Those chips only have the denomination on one side, and there have been zero issues.

I can already see I'm in the minority on this, but I personally prefer denom on both sides. I wouldn't say there's anything inherently wrong with having it on one side, it's just something that bothers on some deep level. I also feel better to have it on both sides when teaching new players so they can always look at the chips value, but the real importance of that is probably dependent on the individual player.

lol, you just bought a set like this!

Would definitely trigger a little OCD for me but I know others are very open to it

While I do have a denomination on both sides, it is a very small element on the “art” side. While it is bigger and centered on the logo side. If it had gotten in the way in the art side I would have dropped it.

Hmm, this is definitely an interesting option. I could imagine fitting a smaller denom onto the "art" side
