Are PNY’s the holy grail of chips (2 Viewers)

I mean this with all due respect for PNY owners, and I think the colors used are fantastic, but I can't get passed the giant photo inlay. The two things I hate the most in a chip inlay, oversized and a photo. I tried to like them, but they are a no go for me, same with the crystal parks. I have owned both and just could not get over the giant inlay, had to sell them both. I am glad people like them, keeps y'all away from chips I like.

Can you imagine how sick the PNY set would be on a THC mold with the same colors, same spots, no photo, normal size inlay. Now that would be a grail set for sure. Could have been one of the best sets ever made but they dropped the ball on breaking the two most sacred of rules, no giant inlay and no photos on the label. My 2c
What he said.

Good thing we all don't like the same thing. I couldn't disagree more on pretty much everything that you posted.

We agree on how cool your carnaval set is, and the Parks are bad ass as well! And ya I'm sure there are plenty of people who disagree with what I said for sure. Who knows maybe some day I would even change my mind. I can remember one point in my life not really liking hot stamps, now I can't get enough of them.

I wasn't hating on your opinion btw. Just saying that you were wrong ;) If we all liked the same thing it would be a boring as place!

I'm not sure that reducing the photo inlay to 7/8" would look that great, THC mold or no. I generally agree that photographic images look poorly on chips, no matter what the base chip material is.

Ya no it would make it worse, no photo in my dream scenario. Just a regular size non photo inlay.

If you look at my collection, I love all kinds of chips. I have plenty of love to go around!

I definitely agree that people get caught up in the Grail or GOAT obsession. For the most part sets of that title do not change hands often. I just don't understand why it is so important for others to love your chips. There are Paulsons, BCCs, TRKs, CPC/ASM hell even C J chips that all have what I consider Grail status... but no matter what there will be people that take the opposition and pick apart something they don't like about them... Perfect example would be the Secondary PCAs

I think they are amazing, yes I am well aware the $1 are RHCs and there for garbage to many... it doesn't bother me in the least! The $1s along with the THCs are all heavy as hell and beautiful colors. Some say there are too many in circulation for them to be considered Grail status... but again who cares, if you love them enjoy your chips and be happy. Almost every meet up we have attended these have been requested. So what makes chips Grail Status? Again all of it is open for debate.

Personally I love Oversized inlays but do not think there is a set that belongs in a Grail discussion, the Vineyards would be the only one possibly for me but against a Leaded THC set... I just don't think so

I absolutely love My Aces... many can't stand them

They don't have to be Grail status to get played or loved!!

I love horseshoe cleveland secondary, and I'm sure there are people out there who don't. They are RHC with glossy faux shaped inlays, those are a no go for some here, I just like them. I don't think we need to justify our love for a certain chip, It is as personal as it goes.

A piece of "inside baseball" for you on those Aces that may cause you to love them even more. A few of my friends back in WA actually opened that place. I knew the owners and several of the dealers there. It was located in a place that you normally wouldn't think you'd find a casino at (more like a truck stop with a burger joint location). I don't think I've ever seen anyone in there who wasn't wearing camo and who didn't have a can a chew in their back right pocket, and if I'm wrong, it'd only be because they were left-handed.

PNYs definitely don't match any of the current PCF hype train buzzwords. They are not THC, they do not have beautiful shaped inlays and they are not Cali colored. Even worse, they bear two of the worst possible traits of a poker chip; giant inlay, and photo inlay.

Pretty much sounds like a complete abomination. Well, at least they are not slugged...

Never thought I'd like them too much in person, however I recently found a set locally and I wanted to just check them out before reselling them here on PCF. I was really surprised at how much I like them, and they are definitely keepers for now. I've been buying some additional barrels and are excited about completing a small travel set of about 350 chips.

I believe it's exactly the giant photo inlays and references to NYC that makes them awesome. The spots and colors in general are nice as well of course, but nothing out of the ordinary.

It's the theme and coherent style across the denoms that I like. I guess playing them is a journey to the NYC. You certainly gotta like that theme to enjoy them. Taste differs from person to person.

For example I find the inlays on all the recent TCR offerings to JACK Detroit/cinci, HS cinci, Cleveland or HSI all to be extremely boring and very uncoherent. To me those are all leagues below PNYs in terms of design.

I don't think they are too slippery, and they shuffle great. It will be a nice alternative to my THC set to mix things up a little.

Are they really cool? Yes
Are they better than a lot of recent RHC options? Absolutely.
Could they have been executed better? Certainly
Are they grail? Definitely not

You are absolutely correct that does make me love them even more!! Haha Merica!! Also I am right handed but keep my chew in my left pocket, but not my back pocket. Not really sure why anyone would want to sit on a metal can... doesn't really make sense to me! Honestly I know they are nothing amazing but they seriously were my first paulson love, the fact that Brie took the initiative and bough those 2 racks for me while I drug my feet debating sanity of spending $150 for a damn rack of chips ( I had to pay $3.50 for my $25s... and I know that is ridiculous but that's what it took to get people to let go of them!) Definitely on the lower end of the collection but also @Marius L brought up a good point about variety... you hear it often round these parts, THC or bust... but for me it is more about showing new chippers a variety of what is out there. You can have your favorite leaded THC set, but also BCCs, scrowns, CPCs, yes even RHCs, hell we have 43mm sunflys that are growing on Brie now, I really think it would be quite boring to have all THC chips that just look different but otherwise the same old thing over and over.

Also if you are into building Tourney sets I would recommend building them with different structures like Mr. And Mrs. @Poker Zombie yes the majority of our local games are T10k, T25 based but why not change it up, build a high roller set, build a T5 based T2k set... keep it interesting, if you have a bunch of old guys that like meat and potatoes every day well that's ok too!! That again is what makes this hobby unique and fun, always keeps you coming back for more!

When I purchased the Siler Tounged Devil CPC chips from @Quicksilver-75 I was planning on remaking the T2k chip a 1k, in my mind these are meet up worthy chips but I wouldn't want them to be held back from play because of a slightly different structure. I have since played them a few times and also a good friend @guyfleegman runs his Casablancas with a T2k lineup and I think it is amazing, a bit of variety that gives it that edge of something different, so when I expand the STDs down the road it will stay the same T2k structure that is was designed as.

I am going to change the plaques from T5k to T10k and then add a T50k as well... that enough but the point is do not get caught up in the greatest available, find what works for you and your group!!

It’s exactly the same for me. I was expecting, perhaps even hoping, not to like them. I don’t like giant inlays let alone photos as inlays. But yet somehow it works, and really well. They’re great in stacks too.

Tried them out on my poker group who for the most part don’t care about chips. When I rotate through PCAs, BTPs, Nevada Lodge, and Capital Rooms, their general reaction is “meh” for the most part. When I used these several of them said “very cool chips.” Kind of funny actually.

Same here. My group don’t give a flying **** about chips but they all commented on the PNYs and even requested them for the next game.

Mostly agree with everything here. I know some love them , but for me they wouldn't be in my top 100 sets for all the above mentioned reasons

Gamblers have no taste.

... present company excepted, of course.

PNY's are not a Grail IMO. I have owned a set which included a rack of the 20's. They are nice chips but not a grail set.

What is a Grail set? I do not think you can have an agreement where 100% of the people in any given room would agree what a Grail set really is. I personally think it is an individual thing. I think a Grail set is something that is generally something that is out of one's reach but once attained really is not a Grail set to them any more.

Marriam Webster defines grail as the object of an extended or difficult quest. Which by definition could be any chipset you are trying to put together. For me my Grail chip was the spotted Flamingo with the bird. I have over 1,000 of them now and they are not a grail chip to me but once were when I was searching for them.

They look... Different.. :) The giant inlay, and it even being a photo inlay. Hard pass for me.
But that's just me, I have what seems to be a chip taste that is not unified with the traditional "PCF buzzwords and hypes" in here. :p
