Are PNY’s the holy grail of chips (2 Viewers)

Everybody's grail is different. PNY don't really appeal to me for various reasons, mainly photo inlay & giant oversize inlay. But doesn't mean that that appeals to others. If you ask 20 people you'll get 20 answers to the "grail set" question. You really shouldn't care what other people think is a grail set but follow what set draws you to seek them out, that will be your grail set.

PNYs are only a grail set when they’re in a grail cabinet

I see these sets going for $10,000 for 800 chips. I have seen the chips, they are cool. Nice that they have the World Trade Center in them. They look to be 12 years old. What gives?
I would rather use ceramics, Matsui, or BJ chips. I am really not a fan of the WTC series.

It would be interesting to see what the spilt of awesome vs meh are here. I'm guessing old school loves them, while n00bs hate them. ;)

Speaking for myself, actual playable (Paulson) casino sets were really rare back then and I think all of them were sought after and automatically the nuts no matter the design. Giant inlays were new and photo quality inlays were new, so Ritz and PNY checked all the boxes. "Plain" white inlays were the default and very dull compared to those. Playable casino sets are abundant now and it seems like parts of the market seem to have gone full circle and now gun for old-old-school inlays from the 60's and 70s (and 80s?). I haven't followed this very closely, but I've never seen any volumes of the Flamingos before I came back here. I don't know if they're from that era or commemorative, but I'm guessing the first. Also, Dunes were like $15 per chip on eBay, so as always it's the rarer - the better.

Windwalker certainly have an impressive collection of old chips I didn't even know about back then. They certainly weren't available on CT and I don't know if they've appeared on the market due to inheritance or greater awareness of their values, but there's certainly more to choose from and more people with different preferences.

The funny thing is that I'm almost offended that not everyone loves these chips, and I guess that's because I have the sister set (Ritz), so I'm just gonna write some of you guys off as morons. :D

PS! Awesome cabinet!

It seems like there were a lot fewer retired casino sets around, especially minty ones, when the PNYs were discovered/released/bought/resold/whatever. The face art and side art are both great. So people did lose their shit a little bit over them, and the higher denoms fetch some lofty prices and stuff, but today I think the term would only apply in the sense of it being someone’s personal grail set.

I want to share my pic "PNY from the Sky" just because there is too many pictures about other chips than PNY in this thread about...PNY... ;)
But you know oggy, sharing is caring ;)

C'mon, we're supposed to be chip nerds around here. The correct term is "side paint."
I thought the same, and have misquoted what Ali said on numerous occasions here, but the last time I listened to it...

[...] For me my Grail chip was the spotted Flamingo with the bird. I have over 1,000 of them now and they are not a grail chip to me but once were when I was searching for them.
Well to me they are definitely grail chips since it seems impossible to get them now for a flamingo set. Great job collecting a thousand of them! :)

I'm contemplating moving a rack or two of the PNY's to fund what else, more chip purchases. I'm thinking of auctioning a rack of ones and maybe selling a rack of fives/two barrels of 20's.

Fair warned, nothing will be cheap.

Well I'm definitely an oldster, and I sold my PNY set as soon as I put it together. I love the $25 secondaries, like the $1s, and can't stand any of the other inlays (and fwiw, I'm from NJ/NY.)

Oh, and despite generally liking giant inlay Paulsons, I can't stand any of the Ritz chips. :cool

We morons have to stick to our guns!

This is what you're saying right now.
"I hate America and love isis and Hitler."?

That's pretty funny coming from a resident of a country that seemed pretty happy living under Nazi control for a couple of weeks short of five years.

And for good measure: 'NBC News, CBS News, Terrorism Research & Analysis Consortium, Reuters) While “Norway seems an unlikely place for Islamist extremism… [and] does not have radical mosques,” approximately 100 fighters from Norway have traveled to Syria and Iraq, some of which have even assumed leadership positions with ISIS.'

You sure you want to play this game? :cool

This is why they are called Grail sets. Only the Lakeside are in my Top 10. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
No, but seriously, aesthetics obviously are going to have a lot to do with who says which set is a grail. But PNYs have to be eliminated from the discussion, because there's just a buttload of them out there. If a bunch of people can have big sets, they're just another set. The three sets @kmccormick100 are all rare enough to be in the discussion. PNY's aren't even on the ballot.

Agreed. Never really regretted sitting out the PNY sales. Had a rack of $20’s for a couple weeks but that was it.
