For a home game that’s just NLHE, I guess straddles are important, to keep things interesting. I’ve never loved straddles, but I’ve come to appreciate how they can affect pre-flop play. But they can also mess with it too.
I was playing in a casino yesterday which allowed the Mississippi straddle, which allows straddling from any position. So of course there was one lag who was tossing out a straddle on just about every hand. Why not - You’re buying that preflop positional advantage.
But it kinda sucks for the rest of the table, when your position is always being stolen, preflop.
And even with a typical straddle from under the gun, if you have a tight nitty player in the big blind, he won’t like that. Which is fine, that’s life, get over it. But if the same guy straddles every orbit, then that nitty guy on his right is gonna have a miserable night.
So
1) is there a straddle that allows people to have fun with the stakes, but doesn’t mess with position? Is that what the button straddle does?
2) does anybody limit how often there can be a straddle, or how often any individual player can straddle?

Maybe the house rule should be “Straddles are fine, just fine be a dick about it and do it every damn hand?”

Usually straddle only allowed utg. Dealer button straddles are too favorable.

And it’s okay to do it every hand if u want. Every orbit essentially. I’ve never seen someone complain about someone straddling consistently as long as your not letting people do it anywhere.

Button straddles are waaaaay different for the game compared to UTG straddles.

I don’t mind multiple UTG straddles as long as it isn’t happening too frequently. If a couple guys want to degen now and then it’s usually funny. It’s the best when the guy who “never straddles” puts on the double or triple straddle.

Every hand of button straddles would change the game and not be as fun.

That’s what I want. I guess I’ll have to just let it go and see what happens.

That’s honestly shocking to me. I’ve seen it in casinos and at home games. You’ve never been at a table with a whiny nit? I feel like there’s at least one in every crowd.

straddles disruptive?

my game is unlimited straddles JUICE JUICE JUICE

The problem I have with this in a home game is that when you invite people to a 25/50c game they expect a 25/50c game, not a $2/5 game disguised as 25/50c. New players can feel intimidated and won’t speak up and are less likely to come back.

Yeah depends on the stakes. I could see anything less than $1-$2 NL the crowd is more cost conscience and could be annoyed.

This.

Sometimes I’ll allow it and sometimes not. Depends on the crowd. Always utg and double the BB though. Don’t mind the occasional re-straddles(s) either unless it’s all the time, completely changing up the game

My group tend to play 6 handed poker, we only start straddle at 2x BB from Utg up until CO so max is 50c/$1/$2/$4/$8 but most of the time is only commonly $2 straddle

Usually people only start to straddle when they losing or want to spice up the game

You’ve never seen whiny nits at a $1/2 table?
There are whiny nits at all tables and stakes. As degens, it important to relentlessly needle them and help them turn from their ways. They must be reminded chips are not manhole covers and it doesn’t take much to put them in the pot.

Please note nit is not “tight”. Nits are just looking to take from the game and never give. If you won’t give action, you have to be fun. Whiny player that don’t give action are the literal worst. Home games can be curated, but it takes more finesse to curate a casino game. But it can be done!

I appreciate this. The whole point here is that I’m trying to re-launch a home game. And although nits aren’t the target customer, my goal here is to keep everybody comfortable with the game first, then take things from there.

ya , understandable.

my game is 1-2 but i get your point

I rake for splash pots. It’s great every 45 min we have collected $30-$40 for a splash pot hand. Everyone sees the flop, no betting before, action starts on the flop with money already in.

You take the individual who straddled, and you firmly yell "NO" while rubbing his face in the staddle on the table. Do this for 10 seconds repeating the word "NO" firmly.
This is helpful. I supppose I should appoint a table captain to sit on the other side of the table, so between the two of us, everybody is within reach.

We can move to the advanced method if the standard doesn't work.

You need a New York Times and a bucket of water.....

I think the option of the button straddle is bad for the game. However, if I'm somewhere where it's allowed I'm usually going to do it. Its so go, bigger pots when you have the button and you get to act last preflop. Totally worth putting money in blind.

If it’s allowed I’m doing it as well lol.

I don’t like the idea of putting limits or rules on the straddles; I think you should allow them (including double & triple straddles), or don’t allow them at all.

My local casino allows 1 straddle from UTG, and that’s it, so I guess that’s an option.

If you're re launching a game, IMO your goal should be to make it sustainable for all the regulars.

My game is usually close friends that don't study poker, so I communicate the stakes what they should expect to win/lose over the night. I don't allow straddles here because they'll skew the expected win/loss amounts which will affect game sustainability.

The last game I had was with former coworkers and I quickly found out a few were degens. The straddle went on, but only an UTG straddle. I wasn't concerned about sustainability here cause these squirrels probably won't be coming back ;) For a while at least as cleanup was a real bitch..

Thank god for my charming and witty personality as I always want to take and never give chips!!! ;)

At the old local casino there was regular old lady everyone called "mama." When people straddled she'd stare them down and say things under her breath in a language I didn't understand :)
