Post mockups for fun/science? (11 Viewers)

Here's two different takes on the same set that I've worked on over the past couple days. Yes, it's extremely crude, and not everything is sized/matches/lines up perfectly, but it's a decent enough representation of what I'm looking to do.

Struggling with a couple things:

  1. Set #1 vs. Set #2, as a general comparison. I like the added color in Set #2 but I appreciate the simplicity of Set #1.
  2. 1" vs. 7/8" inlay - I think I prefer the 7/8" in Set #2.
  3. Which $1 to go with in either set... Set #2 has a Bright White edge spot in the same spot on every chip, so I'm leaning toward keeping that consistent. If I went with Set #1 (only 1 color on edge spots), I could go either way. If I went with the white $1 chip in set #1, I'd change the edge spots on the $5 chip to white.
  4. $20 vs $25 chip in either set... prefer to do a yellow $20, but don't love the color combo on the $20 in set #2.

Any suggestions or glaring mistakes are welcome, would appreciate any input.

Of the two ideas you have, I like #2 better (I really like the white $1 chip in the #2 lineup) but just by a hair, and with the simplicity of the inlay and color matching set #1 could work really well. I like the white $1 in set #1 as well but I'm getting hung up on the back to back similar blue shade spots on the $1 and $5. Here's a stab to change it up a bit:

For set #2 agreed with the above on all the white spots. More so because of the spot pattern you have, having so many white spots reminds me a little of dice chip colors. With all the colors at your disposal, I personally would swap out a lot of those whites -there are lots of different directions you could go, here's one:

You'll see this when you get the color sample, but one recommendation I'd have for the quarter would be retro over dark blue. Dark blue is almost black, for a base color I find retro blue much more interesting.

What stakes are you building this set for? One thing I typically recommend to those just starting their customs process - focus your efforts on your workhorse chips, since you'll have those in play the most. You can design a kick-ass $100 chip you love and settle for a meh $5 chip, but if your group plays 25¢/50¢ and you only get a few $100s in play, you don't get to enjoy it as much.

Yes, I would definitely change the edge spots to white on the $5 if I went with the white $1 chip in Set #1.

I was using the picture in your loaner sample set thread to somewhat guide my color selection. I like Retro Blue too, I would definitely have no problem using it. For whatever reason, I feel like I can't get away from the White and Green (Light or Dayglo) spots on that quarter, it's my favorite chip out of both sets. I would definitely consider moving away from white on the others, though. Your revised $20 and $100 in Set #2 were both exactly what I had in mind if i DID decide to move away from white edge spots.

I had .25/.50 in mind when designing this particular mockup, so obviously the $20 and $100 wouldn't see much action (probably only 1 rack of those two chips combined). That's why I'm hung up on the $1 and also trying to figure out a good spot pattern for the $5. I like the light blue, but I'm not sure there's another color other than white that matches up well with the Red base.

There you go, maybe stick with that dark/retro blue with white & green combo and work from there. Considering the stakes, you could also move that chip to your $1 chip so your favorite is your workhorse chip, then take the white chip you had and make it grey for the quarter. I admittedly am terrible with mocking up red fivers, & agreed that finding another color to compliment the light blue is tough. DG yellow or DG arc yellow could work. That's the fun of tinkering with the chip designer for hours :)

Given you're a jersey guy, this is probably blasphemy but you could also ditch the red chip altogether and slide the yellow chip to the fiver for a nice cali-colored set.

Fixed your wording  ... I like the idea of moving the gray to be the 25¢, but the more I look at it, the more I like the white $1, so I think I may stick with that and keep the blue as the 25¢. At least until I look at it again and change my mind :banghead:

Yeah, that's out lol. At least until I have multiple sets. The guys I play with are so used to casino table games that they'd probably be tilted just by having a yellow $20 instead of a green $25.

$0.05, $0.25, $1, $5, $20, $100. Your thoughts?

$20 and $100 are awfully similar in color... in reality, based on the photo in this thread (https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/cpc-mold-color-sample-set.6088/), the two are more different than they appear on these mockups, but I still wouldn't use both as a base color.

I particularly like the 25¢ and $1 chips, but if I were playing with this set, I'd be reaching for the white chip every time I wanted a $1, just out of habit. Any reason you're not using the blue as the quarter and the white as the $1?

Also, I was advised on my most recent mockup to avoid too many white edge spots, and after revising my set, I'm inclined to agree. No harm in keeping some if you like them (i.e. I like the blue chip as is)... but with so many colors available, I'd try to incorporate more than you have. They're customs for a reason!

Inspired by @Steamtrain 's cutthroat trout set, I've come up with tourney sets for a couple of outdoor hobbies that I also enjoy - fishing and shooting. Again, very crude and not all colors/fonts/spacing line up perfectly, but it's a general idea. I know most people here change up the edge spots throughout the set, but for whatever reason, I prefer keeping them consistent, as long as I can keep from overusing too many colors.

Biggest concern in the Tight Lines set below is the inconsistency of the font color on the inlay. I like using a "lighter" shade of the base color as the color for the inlay, but that makes it harder to use the same font color across the board, even when using different shading/shadowing on the font. The curve going through the denom on each chip is meant to be a cast out fly line - not sure if it adds to the set or just clutters it. The T25 and T100 are the winners here because the white font on the inlay pops nicely.

Below is the Under the Gun set. Same sort of font issues on this set, given the chip colors and edge spots are identical to the Tight Lines set, although I feel like this set comes across better than the one above, even on the T500, T1000, and T5000, where font color can still be seen as an issue.

As always, thoughts/comments/critiques welcome.

EDIT: The inlay art/writing doesn't seem to come across very well unless you're able to zoom in without the image blurring. So perhaps the mockups won't serve any real purpose. Oh well.

so I've dialed in my new tournament chip inlay design. I've always loved the Binions WSOP tourney chip logos. Don't think I will be ordering these chips but definitely will be using this on a project that would involve Gear.

Here is my first mockup...please let me know what you think good and bad. Still working on inlay design.

If you're actually trying to design a set you might be better off starting your own thread. As this thread was mostly started for fun to share ideas, it will be harder for you to track your changes and feedback from others regarding just your set.
Thanks I will try that. Sorry. I'm still a newbie to the site

I really like this label from some crappy chips available from Casino Supply. Not sure what the legalities are when it comes to copying it.

I’m quite sure you can’t copy it, but I believe you can spoof it, so to speak.

That is a great label. Before I found PCF, I was going to order those, but they were out of a denomination, so I settled on Poker Knights.
