so, some questions:
  1. is this worth pursuing?
  2. how different does the label need to be

A good custom set that has great meaning to you is always worth pursuing!

I'm not sure what you are asking with your second question. Do you mean "how different does the inlay have to be from the original design"? There's no true right answer to this, but it shouldn't copy a design entirely, otherwise someone might accuse you of planning something for nefarious purposes.

Is the original a real casino/cardroom? I didn't see it listed in the chip guide, and the original chips look like the old PGI great wall china clays. If you're getting these made by CPC, I would check in with David to see if there's any issue with the inlay design, or how much it needs to be changed. And if it hasn't already been said, make sure you get a CPC color sample, seeing the colors in person is very important!

I like a lot of the color combos on the latest mock up, it's a mixture of old favorites (green/black) and some interesting non-so-common color combos. A little heavy on yellow and the 500-5k are a little too pastel for my liking but I don't think it affects distinguishing chips, for the most part. However one concern I'd have is the color similarities in the 1 and 5, they both have the same white and red and blue/grey are pretty close. With the 4D14 spots, you could run into dirty stack issues, like this (pics borrowed from DoubleEagle):

As far as I know, it's a fantasy casino. I found the chips here.

any issue with the inlay design

I contacted the seller, trying to find out more about the labels, but probably asked the wrong questions. All I know is they resell chips they get from a manufacturer, and they don't sell labels. Next, I'll just be blunt and ask them who the manufacturer is. Not sure why they'd want to divulge that, but it won't hurt to ask at this point. In any case, to avoid IP issues, my current plan is to design a label inspired by those originals.

Regarding chip colors, I want to match the scheme of the originals as close as possible. I've got samples of the originals on the way, so this may change. Any denominations above $500 or below $1 can be fiddled with. I'll check for dirty stack issues.

I like the label design. It feels "classic". Needs all the denom numbers still (hate non-denominated chips). You could advance that classic feel with H-mold or S-Crown.

I have seen the imperial chip from manufacturers on alibaba. But I have also seen multiple venders selling the same chip design that I assume would have trademarks.

Unfortunately it's not my design. I think I've tested the boundaries of fair use.

I'm not wedded to CPC, either. I'm just using their design tool because that's the only one I know about that works well, and it can create a design that's pretty close to the originals.

Discount Poker Shop used to have what appears to be the same chips, but with more colors and denominations. Long before I knew what a Paulson was, I thomeant got these were the bee’s knees.
