As a new member (joined in January), I found my energy level for PCF content extremely high in March-May, peaking during the early COVID lockdown weeks. The amount of help from long time (and even more recent) members on here was really refreshing and, even as I'm sure I asked the same newbie questions that everyone else asked, the fact that members still answered them thoughtfully, that went a long way towards increasing my interest in chipping.
For me a lot of the recent downturn in "energy" feels like it's related to COVID burnout and being frustrated at not being able to enjoy the summer (including live poker and all that entails). I feel like my main poker group chat is also in a serious down turn over the past 4-6 weeks, and in a way that makes sense. The world is changing dramatically, so some of it might be an existential feeling that whatever hobby we are immersed in just isn't as important at the moment, even as we still have a deep love for it. Also, while "working from home" and playing online was initially kind of exciting, even under the circumstances, it is now just routine and some in the community are losing too much on the digi-felt to keep participating (online poker for me has been going great, but I feel the downswings all around me and that is a part I really dislike about the game).
I think that when things open up (2021??) and we can safely play live and visit casino's and go on roadtrips and all of the rest... that our energy for online forums like PCF will return as well. Obviously for some of the old-timers here, there is more at play than just COVID and broader world events but it's just a stressful time for a lot of us (job security, health concerns, not seeing family regularly). Personally, I have also spent soooo much $$$ here over my first 6 months that I just can't look at all the classifieds anymore so that's another real factor
.
I was supposed to play my first ever WSOP in Vegas this year so that's been depressing as well. Instead, it's a weekend of camping out in Jersey with the in-laws to grind the online slate, but it doesn't compare.
Anyway, just another new member stating that, while I agree with the general sense of a downturn, I still appreciate how much time and effort everyone here continues to put into PCF. Those who are feeling less inspired or maybe even a little burnt out, don't feel like you need to shoulder the responsibility - trust that others will step up and fill the void. It's fine to focus on life outside of chipping for a few months and come back refreshed and energized!
