How old is everyone lol/ is poker doomed? (1 Viewer)

How was your 21st to Vegas?

Here’s mine from 4 years ago Vegas gamblin on the strip and downtown and arches. First I played $25 slot at Bellagio to test my luck, went well won on first spin.

Next day, I bought bunch of slot tokens from @Spinettis Gaming on downtown. Also playing coin slots at El Cortez.

I mainly played slots back then, should’ve grabbed a lot of CC THC $5s and $25s because I stayed there and didn’t harvest!! I regret I only brought back $1 tokens…

Poker doomed...come on now

In my 30's and the group(s) I play with are 20's-60's. Just came back from playing WSOP events, the fields are much larger than last year and many younger people in their 20's. Very wide age range in the cash games as well. IMO looks like poker is growing with live streams and online poker making a comeback after the scandals.

Chip collecting might appeal to an older demographic. I don't see the appeal in collecting chips. I only registered because I saw some group buys I might be interested in for my new setup.

For the past 2 or 3 years, I've hosted at least once a month. Monthly tournament league with high school friends and their siblings. Usually have anywhere from 5 to 8 players a night. We play STT's of varying formats that usually last anywhere from 3 to 5 hours. I would throw a cash game in there every 3 or 4 months to mix things up in addition to the monthly tournaments.

The last weekend of this month is going to be the last league game we have for quite some time. I decided I'm not going to do it for the coming year. Too many changes in the lives of the core group of my players. Two guys with new girlfriends, another guy getting engaged, buying a house, and suddenly having extra responsibility of helping to care for his paraplegic father after a bad accident all within the past year. Another that just became a first time father, you get the idea.

I've had to cancel one off games in the past due to lack of interest. I've never canceled two consecutive scheduled games. I've always been able to get enough of interest for the following scheduled game. I'm on a streak now of 4 consecutive games that I scheduled weeks in advance going up in smoke due to lack of availability and interest. All cash games too independent of the tournament league.

Excuse my whining and venting, I'm just bummed out.

Yeah I had to cancel my last 2 games bc it wasn’t working w everyone’s schedule. Summer is tougher. Previously I would pick Saturdays that worked for my core 3-4 and build the game around it but it’s a lot of work. I’m going with a specific weekday moving forward and running every week for consistency.

Sorry to hear about the game loosing steam.

Summer is tough for me too with birthdays, vacations, and overall just more social gatherings.

I'm going to try and do a Friday night game next month and see if I get better attendance then. Maybe more people around since they worked that day and go away during the weekend. Who knows.

It was inevitable that the game was going to hit a snag with 4 guys that I can count on to show 80 to 90% of the time now tied up lots of the time. I've stepped up my recruiting from here, but lots of guys are in the same boat with family commitments and can't make a regular game.

I'm 30, joined here when I was 26 as I didn't really "play" poker until that age. Played a few times inconsistently from 18-24, maybe 5 times or so but always enjoyed it. I was just never in a stage of my life where I could responsibly gamble, for whatever that is worth lol. I take it serious to not allow poker or other means of gambling to grab a hold of me.

Will be 55 soon, look like I am older due to grey and missing hair. Originally collected chips from casinos I went to starting in the 1990s, sets started in 2004. Took a break once I had a set of thc, chipco, and bj cic. Found pcf when CT was dying and picked up other sets and trk. I am down to picking up unusual chips and racks that I might overlabel one day, but kinda bored with collecting. Think it is that retirement is 12 years or less away and I am thinking of downsizing everything.

Late 20s, I play a home game with friends all under 30. The game definitely skews old, but I think there's been a slight resurgence in the last few years (COVID and online gambling? Live streamers boosting popularity?). Obviously the WSOP gets cheaper every year with inflation, but they are breaking attendance records.

44 here. Been playing since I saw Chris Moneymaker win the main event on ESPN. At the time my group of friends were all in our twenties. We still get together a few times a year now 20 years later and games are sometimes mixed with the younger generations. But overall I think poker is for whoever wants to compete and use their intelligence to try and outwit their opponents. You can’t put an age on that.

I’m 31, which means I’m still usually the youngest at the table when I play at a casino. But our home game is entirely Millennials / Gen Z, which consists of an invite group chat of about 30 members. So the game is definitely not dead. But it’ll always be changing and evolving in different ways.

I was 29 when i saw the first poker after dark series and fell in love with this game...
Now i'm 47 and still love it!

I wonder if you switch it to mainly cash games and Thursdays if that would work better for you. Don’t get me wrong I love a good tournament but something about the uncertainty of, am I going to play for 5 hours til the end or is someone going to hit a two outer on me and I’m pissed and going home after 2 hours kinda sucks.
We play every Thursday night with guys anywhere from 35-65 years old but most I feel are 40-50 with kids. Thursdays are awesome for us bc more people tend to work from home on Fridays but have less family commitments than Friday and Saturday nights. I get asked all the time to play Friday or Saturday nights but my wife is cool enough to “Let” me play on Thursdays as long as Friday and Saturday are family nights so I don’t get greedy.

This is why our group has played Thursday nights for over 20 years

I'm 27. I got into poker a year or two before the pandemic hit, playing micro stakes with some friends with dice chips (many people do!). Over time I grew to like the game a lot, for its mix of mathematical and social complexity, and found the forum and bought my first china clay. Since moving to Switzerland haven't found as much time to play, except for the occasional online game with PCF or friends from Toronto.

These days I've been window shopping all kinds of sets in the classifieds, but can't pull the trigger until sorting our if I'll be staying in Switzerland long term (don't like the idea of buying a 800+ set then having to move with it...).

Overall I really enjoy the game and see myself continuing to play as a side hobby for many years. I've mostly played NLHE but have some interest in short deck.

I think poker hype comes and goes,

There is definitely more competition to group social time now than 20 years ago.

Teenagers and young adults are more likely to have gaming nights with Video Games, Boardgames and DnD. It is a common problem for DnD to get people to commit to regular time slots to play regularly. I think that is also the case that people are just more busy and have more options on what to do.

Online poker is also a thing that will help but at the same time Poker is not as mainstream TV material as it was.

Im 29, and my playing group is from 20-55 ish. I have seen many 20 year olds start playing NLHE and got burned badly by losing fast and now won´t touch the game as well.

I think things will balance itself out but the WSOP having a record attendance is a positive sign. I just wish there would be more standard big tours like EPT, WSOP, WPT and so on that are well advertised and have nice broadcasts.

51 years of bad decisions and near misses here. I haven't played regularly since 2010. I'm just here for the tiny artwork.
