They say that HH27 is over oaked. I can take it off your hands for you
It is, a tad. This is my second bottle. Super woody, almost cigar-box like. Very little in the form of softer notes like caramel or fruit, and on the palate, though the tanins are initially a bit harsh, it turns a bit spicy and has tiny hints of vanilla.

sounds delicious.

Oops?

I mistakenly bought Wild Turkey 101 Straight Bourbon yesterday (was supposed to grab the rye for some cocktails).

Any opinions on it? What’s the best way to drink it?

101 is quickly becoming my go-to for old fashioneds. I prefer old grandad BiB for other bourbon cocktails, but 101 would work well there as well. It's also not bad neat or on ice!

Anyone want to trade? I’m over bourbon and focusing on scotch and Japanese whisky

For trade I have:
OWA corked
WSR
Alberta cask rye
Little Book ch 2

I'd love to trade for the Wellers.
Always wanted to try but haven't been able to ever get my hands on it.

Thanks for the Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon news! I just picked up a bottle of Old Overholt Bonded Straight Rye in place of the Wild Turkey 101 Rye for Old Fashions & other cocktails. Should last me a few weeks. ;)

Also grabbed a Jefferson Ocean Aged at Sea Bourbon, which I won’t be mixing.

It surprises me the Kelpi CR is selling for more than the Dark Cove CR. The Dark Cove CR is delicious and it is probably my favorite Ardbeg!

Heard great things about the Alligator but haven't tried it yet. Also heard great things about really old Arbegs but haven't had any of those either. I'l sure you had plenty of those old, dusty 'Begs, Larry. Are they as phenomenal as people say?

Sorry to disappoint you, Paulo, but I'm not much of a fan of limited releases. I'm always suspicious that they were created by mistake, so someone decided "What the hell, let's sell it as something special!" Especially at the bottle price of a decent used car...

(Kinda like Mike Cross's description of jazz -- "Hit a bad note? No problem -- just legitimize that note by repeating it." :cool)

I'm more interested in a distillery's ability to produce consistent flavor over the years, so I can have confidence when I recommend it to someone else.

Most experts say Ardbeg quality dropped a bit after 1978, but they seem to be doing very well since the last closure ... still my favorite Islay, though.

Not disappointing me at all, Larry. I totally hear what you're saying. I think when distilleries started releasing special editions, the idea was to showcase and augment its profile. So there's certainly outstanding SR out there (imo). There's some bad ones as well. And prices and availability on those have been increasing and decreasing exponentially, respectively.

But I agree, what counts the most is the ability to produce consistently great and plenty available bottles.

Hard for me to pick a favorite Islay, LOL!!! Not even sure I can pick my top three!
