There have been a few black inlay vintage style sets coming through the pipe recently. Seeing these sets has helped me realize the black inlay, white ring, minimal color artwork is very appealing to me. It is the primary reason why I am so fond of The Capital Room chips.

I have never really considered having a custom set made, primarily because they don't hold their value. I am not one for really keeping sets for more than a couple years. I use them several times then they work their way out of the rotation... and I sell them for around what I paid. Basically renting them for a couple years.

I thought it might be possible to create a custom set that could maintain its value if it had enough appeal to the connoisseurs in this community. That is my motivation for this set.

See the chipguide link below for images of the original Flamingo Las Vegas chips

You will notice that there were several flavors of chips (specifically $5) created in 1948/49. There was also a new set made in 1967 that introduced the beautiful 50c chip as well as the $100 and $500.

My first mockup was essentially a replica of the 1967 set. Taking some liberties on the $1 because the $1 appears to never have had an inlay similar to the rest.
SET 1 (aka 1967)

The first thing you will likely notice is that all of the spotted chips have 3V12. This is consistent with the 1967 set. Unfortunately, the modern 3V12 is not quite the same as the original... or there used to be a 3V14 or something.

This lead me to mix and match various version of the chips to try to get a bit of an edge spot progression. I took some liberties on the $500 as well. Additionally, I wanted to toss in the roulette inlay on the back of the chip. That artwork is amazing as well.
SET 2 (aka mix and match)

The set above is 50c, $1, $5, $25, $100, $500.

Regarding the use of the artwork. I have not discussed with @David Spragg the changes necessary in order to not infringe on copyright. I am hopeful the word "Flamingo" can be used. If not, I think this idea dies. I can imagine adding "Est. 1946" or "Commemorative" or "1946-1970" or something to differentiate it from the originals.

I am open to feedback on the design. I am curious if others would be interested in a set of these? This would be structured as a group buy. As stated in other threads, there isn't a qty price break through CPC. So I can only assume that the prices will be as defined on the CPC site.

Interesting! Love that top/original lineup, as well as the "updated" 5, hundo, & $500. For my money, the top lineup is where it's at, though. In for at least samples, and mayhaps a small set.

Love the idea. Always liked the black inlay with white ring, so much so that I used it for my Magnolia Casino-Card Room inlay

I'm in for at least a sample set and maybe more. Can't wait to see final mockup. Hopefully you can keep as close to Flamingo design as possible for the tribute without raising any copyright flags.

Here is an image that contains several of the original flamingo chips. This was a copy/paste from chipguide. Like I said, there are a bunch of $5 to choose from.

Another artwork idea I had was to use a different design on each denomination. There are several to choose from.

Hello,

would love a couple of sample sets if they're up,

Thank you

Love the top set, but wouldn't mind seeing the blue fiver in the $1 position, or the yellow fiver in the 5 position. Also not a fan of having a solid frac and a solid $1 in the same lineup.

Top set for sure. Any chance a 25 cent label option gets made for the frac? Or would that be jeopardizing the sacredness of the set? (Sorry, my friends are nits)

Sure are pretty and I wish you luck. For me, $2-$3 per chip is a too steep for commemoratives.

Seeing lots of love for the top set (essentially the 1967 set). I agree about the blue $5 being used as a $1... but might be too sacrilegious. Agreed about the solid frac and solid $1.

So what is it about the 1967 set that everyone likes? Or better yet, what is it about the "pick and choose" set that everyone hates? Is it the different backside inlay (the building)?

I like the 3u pattern quite a bit, and wouldn't be opposed to a CPC rendition of them.

It's not necessarily the "pick and choose" that I hate, but rather split spots - and the 1949 rack is filthy with them. I'm much more of a fan of X12, X14, XD14, or 3u for vintage sets (some of the older Horseshoe Club racks used the 3u pattern very effectively as well). Also, not a big fan of yellow spots on a dark green base w/o some blue/purple/pink to go with it. Nor am I a fan of that - what is that...tan? beige? - spot on the fiver, partly because I can't tell what it is, and partly because that fiver has no pop to it at all. The colors blend too well. At least the yellow pops from the red on the 67 rack, and is there to set off the red (orange?) spot in the middle.

Oh, and no, not a fan of the picture of the building. The pic itself isn't atrocious, I really don't like it w/o a denom on it, and like the flamingo that much more than the building.

I would be interested in participating. I prefer the 67 set but would consider changing the purple 50 cent chip from an inlay to a hot stamp.

I am still surprised by all the '67 love. I really included that image just to show the start point. I really dislike the fact that the edgespot is the same for the 5 through 500. If I could get a "U" spot like the original, I could go with it.

Regarding the "pick and choose" set, what is it that you don't like? Maybe the $5?

Here is an updated "pick and choose" where the $5 is based on the 1967 $5. Without the "U" spot, but a 314. I eliminated the building image on the backside of the chip.

We'll call this SET 3

Sadly, I just exchanged an email with @David Spragg indicating that the name "Flamingo" cannot be present on the chip. This is due to CPC's active Nevada Gaming License.

I think that kills this concept. I do not see any incarnation of another word meeting my criteria of "creat[ing] a custom set that could maintain its value if it had enough appeal to the connoisseurs in this community."

So it goes... it was fun to concept.

Ok, so you'll start the "Flaming o" casino chipset..............??? ;)

See what I did there......
