The Redneck Poker Card Database (6 Viewers)

Hey..... I'm not done with this marathon yet. :ROFLMAO:

Pokah Wonkah

OK, yes, the name is goofy. No argument there. But, if you can get past that, I think I might have found another PVC card that has won me over besides Angel.... well.... OK, let's make that 2 hurdles you need to get over.... here's the 2nd one...

But first, let's get something out of the way... DO NOT READ THIS NEXT PART STANDING UP!!!! If you do and end up falling down & hitting your head it's not my fault.... you were warned. So.... sitting down?.... OK, good, here we go.....

These are indeed PVC cards, not Cellulose-Acetate. & no, they are not bathed in gold dust, or been produced by, and only touched by, the delicate hands of naked virginal angels .... in fact, they're produced on Copag's Texas Hold'Em stock. Now, as good as that may be compared to Copag's other usual suspects, you may have a hard time justifying a price of the equivalent (as I write this) of $18.25 USD per deck.... BEFORE shipping across the Atlantic.

I'll give you a minute to digest that & recompose yourself........

...............

...............

Have you regained your composure yet?..... OK.... let's continue.....

So, what do I like so much about 'em? Well, they are on Copag's Texas Hold'Em stock. Which has a much nicer finish than everything else they churn out. It's an actual true Linen finish. They are also a tad thicker which makes 'em a bit stiffer as well (17 vs 19) which pushes 'em up into medium-soft territory. But, I can live with that for this next reason.

As a rule, I HATE "peek index" cards. With a passion. What always happens with peek index cards is the addition of the peek index means the regular index gets pushed further down the side of the cards. So, if you're too old to use the peek index you have to look halfway down the side of the cards to tell what the h*ll you're holding. If you're not familiar with this particular crime.... here's an example of the worst peek index offenders....

With no suit pips below the rank, if you get dealt the 9 of spades & a black ace never mind needing to look halfway down the side, you have to basically look at the whole d*mn card to see if you're suited or not. Apologies to those of you with eagle-vision, but, what a cluster-f*ck trying to play with these would be for me & most others in the "knocking on the door of 60" set.

Well, these guys came up with what I consider an awesome solution. In a bit of thinking "outside the box", why not put the peek indexes on the opposite corners of the standard index?

View attachment 619952

If you're askin' me, that's an ingeniously simple solution to an annoying problem. I love it. I don't care if you're 19 or 99, you have a choice that you can read.

Also, they've used Cartamundi's awesome "Casino" font.... & with bright red ink even.

The back design comes in your choice of 4 colors (left to right) Warm Black, Bronzetone, Mulberry Wood, or Thatch Green.

View attachment 619966

Normal price would cost you just shy of a Bennie to get 4 decks across the pond. I got a "Black Friday" deal of 4 decks for the price of 3, but that still ended up costing me nearly $80 USD shipped.

If you can get past the price & the name doesn't put you on tilt. I think these are the best PVC cards on the planet at the moment. & for the price, they certainly ought to be.

Don't knock them just yet. I used only Copaq for years because they were cheap and easy to find. Now I pay twice that for Fournier cards because they last 4 times as long as Copaq. Let's see how they last before we judge the price.

Awsome review buddy @Dix...and to add insult to injury

Both the Pokah Wonkah decks as the Neder poker cards will be part of the GB.
Could add Zero's and Cartamundi (red & blue) casino plastic (BE stock) if there are members that want some too.

Because I can combine all the orders shipping wise...shipping can be as low as $2-3 per deck.

Still working out the price with the Pokah Wonkah guys...but I have confirmation that the Black Friday offer will be extended for a small order...when we can go BIG, I can get bulk discount.
There is also a 'golden ticket' in some of the PW decks (freeroll entry...for +1K tourney)

The Neder poker decks will be 6 EUR (no discount, they were 9 EUR/deck), the Cartamundi casino (BE stock) are 9 EUR each.

More info will follow soon :)

Lest you thought I was done with this carpet bombing run.....

GEMACO Superflex

Not all card reviews can be puppys, rainbows & sunshine. Or, as someone famously said back in the 80s, "Every Rose Has It's Thorn"....

Where do I start?....

How about we start with the largest source of my aggravation.... that scourge to the sanity of the world of commerce known as Kardwell International...

bubbles.jpg

I won't rehash the entire sordid story here, suffice to say that I ordered a couple decks back on JULY 18th. & they just arrived... LAST WEEK.

Stuck on Stupid seems to be a phrase tailor-made specifically for outfits like Kardwell. Seriously, if it's customer service you're looking for, you are very likely far better off expecting it from your state's DMV.

If you're curious, go back to Page 8.... https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/the-redneck-poker-card-database.52229/post-1275307

At any rate, after tossing my hat in the ring to try winning a set in a giveaway, I called them again for what has to be the sixth or seventh time & they finally actually delivered. Well, sort of..... not the ENTIRE order mind you, but at least the cards. I'm going to ignore the remainder of that order. Just cut my losses, save my sanity, & call it a win.

At this point I should at least be able to confirm that these are indeed great cards though.... right? I mean, just look at what everyone here says about 'em when they are mentioned.

If Gemaco Superflex impress you as great cards, well then, bless your heart. (If you don't know what that means, ask a redneck from the south) :D

Let's start with the name.... Superflex....
No.jpg

The name SuperFLEX would imply flex-ABILITY, would it not? Meaning flex-ABLE. (That's flexibility & flexible for you spell-check fanatics)

While I normally hesitate to accuse anyone of telling porkies (well, not really), or deliberate false advertising (again, not really, I actually try not to miss a good opportunity at throwing the BS flag when warranted)
yellow_bs.jpg

A flex score of 15.5 BARELY gets these things out of pure "medium" territory. How "awesomely average"!!! :ROFLMAO:

H*ll, at a flex rating of 19, Monarchs are more flexible than Superflex. Go figure.

But, the disappointment doesn't stop there. Monarchs have a decent matte finish front & back, while the Superflex have that finish on the backs only. The faces are smooth as the freshly Zambonied surface of Boston Garden. & these are supposed to be Gemaco's "Casino Quality" decks.

Meh.... the consumer oriented Monarch are far better quality if yer askin' me, & you don't have to deal with Kardwell to get 'em, which is a win-win in my book.

Well some people just have to rant.... Good for you @Dix

But on to Gemaco. Stiff, ugly and unreliable...
I bought a deck in times I played a lot and was more then pissed. Dark, ugly face cards, stiff and after one evening of moderate use I noticed little marks made by nails. I heard people do that on purpose but I do not think that was the case. Anyway I throw away that deck after 2 weeks. For some reason they reminded my of unpleasant experience with Ace Cartamundi.

PS.

And thanks for Pythons reference, I love them.

@Dix Question here. I've been pouring over your database (honestly for months - LOL. I'm a data nerd for sure) in search of the perfect deck for me. First requirement - reasonable (cheap if possible) cost, with a linen/linen finish. I've found DaVinci Persiano ($14.95 per setup) and Modiano Texas Poker ($12.95 per setup) on Amazon. But I can't seem to find your personal reviews for any Modiano cards except for Elements. I feel like we talked about Texas Poker once before, but I can't find that either.

I have a setup of Modiano bridge size that I like, so I assume both of these would be similar, but I am noticing in the database that there is a difference in the flex rating. I'm leaning towards the slightly stiffer DaVincis but would love to read some reviews or hear comments from anyone. I suspect I would like the Platinum line best, but they run about double the price of these two.

@Dix But I can't seem to find your personal reviews for any Modiano cards except for Elements.
Anything that was a part of the original v1 of the database I never wrote a review for (would have taken a week - or two). But, I've started filling some of those holes as I write reviews for other decks that are done on the same card stock.

I feel like we talked about Texas Poker once before, but I can't find that either.
Yep.... back up a page: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/the-redneck-poker-card-database.52229/post-1301740

Anything Modiano (or made by 'em - including DaVinci & Guild) is going to have that nice Linen/Linen finish. If you can get past the fat spades & the fact that you're dealing with a bunch of snakes. :D

Credit where it's due though.... card finish & quality at a semi-reasonable price are things they do seem to excel at.

Difference in their card stocks seems to come down to just thickness & flex.

The TxPoker & DaVinci are going to be your best options price-wise. Choice will come down to flex preference.

The great thing about Modianos is that when you buy Modianos, you know what you are getting. The finish is the same, the faces are the same. I stay away from Modianos because of their service problems they had here though. Cartamundi is the opposite. They make so many cards under the Cartamundi name, that you have no idea what a Cartamundi card is.

Given your criteria you gave, if you are looking for jumbo index, I have the answer for you, go no futher - https://www.playingcards.net/BICYCL...NDY-PLASTIC-POKER-JUMBO-INDEX-SET_p_1672.html . Similar feel to Modianos, similar flex, great price! Just know they don't come in boxes, but for that price, buy a nice wooden box for them!

Neder Poker
It's no big secret that in my book "softer = better". So, when @surfik sent me a deck of Tobago Casino cards on Cartamundi's "Casino Branded" stock, I immediately went on a quest to find where I could get my hands on something done on the same card stock in a different color, so I could make sets.

Three swings & three misses is called a strikeout. So leave it to that guy in the clean-up slot of the lineup, @Thomacetti to step up to the plate & knock it out of the park while I watch from the bench. :ROFLMAO:

These are a dead match to the Tobago Casino cards right down to the pip font used. https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/the-redneck-poker-card-database.52229/post-1154573

As always specs up in the database: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/resources/the-redneck-poker-card-database-2-0.76/

& now I need to get more Tobagos off Surfik. :D
Hey @Dix or @Thomacetti , can you post an actual pic of the Neder Poker backs? Are the real backs that faded looking? I assume that's just a bad photo?

Please explain faded Jake...picture seems ok for me.

I'll shoot some pictures for you tonight

Thanks. I've heard good things about them too. I'll try a couple of these and the Davincis. I think the Texas Poker may be a little more flexible than I want.

I've been in so many group buys, I have a couple dozen decks with no boxes. I recently bought a template online, and I'm going buy some nice card stock to start making my own tuck boxes soon. With custom graphics! So no boxes is not a deal killer.

I said it before but that not exactly the truth. There are several differences stockwise depending on line of Modiano products. I counted five different stocks. Having said that products within the "lines" are pretty consistent in material and quality.

Yes, exactly, different stock, but all very similar. But the same finishes and the same faces in all of them.

I would never called Texas, Cristallos and Platinium similar. They very different cards in my opinion.

As CURRENTLY in production (important caveat), there are basically just two stocks that specifically carry the "Modiano" brand name..... "Platinum" and "Traditional".

Platinum is used for the "Platinum" line.

Traditional is used for everything else that carries the Modiano name. (Texas Poker, Cristallo, Golden Trophy, Club Poker, etc)

Other stocks are used for decks that don't carry the Modiano brand name (DaVinci), and/or may be specified by other brands where Modiano serves as the production house (Guild, Tactic Games)

But, all those stocks only really vary by weight/thickness/flex. The finish amongst Modiano stocks is the most consistent of any of the major players. ( I write this having just pulled a Platinum & a TxPoker out of my stock)

Does anyone have both the Fournier WSOP cards and some Fournier 2818 or 2800 cards (all poker jumbo decks)?

I do not believe that all Fournier cards are in fact created equal. The WSOP cards have a linen finish on both the backs and the faces, whereas the 2800 cards have a smoother finish to them. That said, the card stock feels stiffer on the 2800's versus the WSOP's, which are noticeably more flexible. The card font used on the WSOP cards is also noticeably fuller and darker. Can anyone confirm my crackpot musings or am I crazy? @Dix

@JMC9389 , I don't have the 2800. I do have other versions of the 2818 (EPT, WPT). I can compare them against my WSOP 2818's if you wish, but I can't measure the flex in the same way that @Dix does.

Yes, I have both and completely agree. Those Fournier 2800s are one of the first Fournier sets I bought, and I remember being dissapointed in how slippery they were. It does not have the great texture of the bridge sized Fourniers 2828s. Even different branding of the 2828s I have vary in the amount of texture on them, it's very strange. The 2800s are smoothest by far though. The font on my WSOP Fourniers and 2800 are identical though. The 2800s have security red, and the WSOPs have bright red.

If there's a difference it was something done just for the WSOP decks. Otherwise, a Fournier, is a Fournier, is a Fournier.... or a Bike Prestige.... depending on who's name is on the box. :D

The "model/version" number on a Fournier has to do with the material, size, and pip style. Fournier's website isn't playing nice with me at the moment, however from an old post.....

Anything 100% plastic will start with 2xxx

2818 =
Poker Size / Jumbo Index
2826 = Bridge Size / Jumbo Index
2508 = Poker 4 Pip / Std Index
2525 = Bridge 4 Pip / Std Index

The last sentence is where I disagree. These are the different Fournier decks that I have:

20210124_144431.jpg

There's definitely a difference in font with the WSOP decks.

@Dix I also respectfully disagree with you. In terms of your metrics, yes, the Fournier cards are the same thickness, flex, etc. However, there's a.definite difference between the finish of the 2800 decks (Titanium Edition with heart and Spade box art) and the 2818 line. The backs of the 2818 line are definitely smoother to the touch than the 2800 line that has a linen/somewhat textured touch to the card backs.

The same goes for the bridge size decks as @Jake14mw alluded to. There's definitely a difference between the 2826 Congress backs that have a smoother finish and the FDL back decks that I own that have a definitely more textured finish.

How old are the decks you're talking about????.... I have a fresh set of "heart & spade box art" decks.... they BOTH have "2818" on 'em.

Linen finish front & back.... blindfolded you couldn't tell 'em apart from a Bike Prestige to save your life.

I don't recall ever seeing a deck with "2800"
