Been taking a dive into some notable movies I’ve never seen recently. Watched Blow Out from Brian De Palma today, great flick. I’ve been super into the neo-noir stuff.

Saw One battle after another the other day. The first 45 minutes or so were good, then it’s the usual: poorly written characters that we’re supposed to care about, but don’t. Some cringe comic relief scenes and a complete waste of Benicio del Torro.

It wasn’t horrible - the 2 hours and 40 something minutes didn’t feel like it - but it certainly was no masterpiece either.

Watched Blow Out from Brian De Palma today, great flick.

Enjoyable remake/reimagining, but it's also from that horrendous De Palma period where every freaking movie starred his (often miscast) wife.

Hey Brian, Peter Bogdanovich and Cybill Shepherd want their schtick back.

Never got around to watching it when it first came out and the reviews/opinions since haven’t exactly motivated me.
It's worth a watch imo. That said, I had to watch it twice for it to start to make sense. I've seen it a few times now and I find that I appreciate the film a little bit more each time.

Maybe I should give it a try then. I’m a big Nolan fan and love everything else he’s done

Same here, but Tenet is a mess.

My best description of it is a dysfunctional, poorly structured movie that somehow makes dumb people feel smart.

It's actually a very simple movie, but it's presented badly and I would bet a lot of the plot was left on the cutting room floor. From my past life as a writer, I knew everything that was going to be revealed way before it happened, and the only surprises were how incredibly bad Denzell's son's acting was and how irritating the constant electronic screeches and squalls were.

I didn't see it in the theatre due to COVID, but I bought the Bluray and had a Tenet Party and invited a pile of friends (who had also not seen the movie), all huge fans of Nolan, over to watch it on the 85-in TV.

No joke - two couples got up to leave about halfway through, stating they couldn't take any more of this garbage, my kids left due how bad the movie was and that the techno screeching was giving them a headache. A few more friends left 2/3 of the way through and my wife finally gave up not long after. By that time I was the only one still sitting there, and although it was unbearably bad, I finally made it through. My God.

And these are all smart people, who easily understood the concept and the movie, and absolutely love Nolan, but it was just so poorly made and acted, that they wouldn't sit through it. Go to Reddit and unemployed neckbeards living in their parent's basement will tell you they really only understood Tenet the 37th time they rewatched it and that it's the greatest movie ever made.

One huge fan even admitted that because Tenet was made by Nolan, the movie is automatically great and it's our problem if we don't like it. Okay...

Tenet is truly a real-life example of The Emperor's New Clothes.
