Been taking a dive into some notable movies I’ve never seen recently. Watched Blow Out from Brian De Palma today, great flick. I’ve been super into the neo-noir stuff.

Saw One battle after another the other day. The first 45 minutes or so were good, then it’s the usual: poorly written characters that we’re supposed to care about, but don’t. Some cringe comic relief scenes and a complete waste of Benicio del Torro.

It wasn’t horrible - the 2 hours and 40 something minutes didn’t feel like it - but it certainly was no masterpiece either.

Watched Blow Out from Brian De Palma today, great flick.

Enjoyable remake/reimagining, but it's also from that horrendous De Palma period where every freaking movie starred his (often miscast) wife.

Hey Brian, Peter Bogdanovich and Cybill Shepherd want their schtick back.

Never got around to watching it when it first came out and the reviews/opinions since haven’t exactly motivated me.
It's worth a watch imo. That said, I had to watch it twice for it to start to make sense. I've seen it a few times now and I find that I appreciate the film a little bit more each time.

Maybe I should give it a try then. I’m a big Nolan fan and love everything else he’s done

Same here, but Tenet is a mess.

My best description of it is a dysfunctional, poorly structured movie that somehow makes dumb people feel smart.

It's actually a very simple movie, but it's presented badly and I would bet a lot of the plot was left on the cutting room floor. From my past life as a writer, I knew everything that was going to be revealed way before it happened, and the only surprises were how incredibly bad Denzell's son's acting was and how irritating the constant electronic screeches and squalls were.

I didn't see it in the theatre due to COVID, but I bought the Bluray and had a Tenet Party and invited a pile of friends (who had also not seen the movie), all huge fans of Nolan, over to watch it on the 85-in TV.

No joke - two couples got up to leave about halfway through, stating they couldn't take any more of this garbage, my kids left due how bad the movie was and that the techno screeching was giving them a headache. A few more friends left 2/3 of the way through and my wife finally gave up not long after. By that time I was the only one still sitting there, and although it was unbearably bad, I finally made it through. My God.

And these are all smart people, who easily understood the concept and the movie, and absolutely love Nolan, but it was just so poorly made and acted, that they wouldn't sit through it. Go to Reddit and unemployed neckbeards living in their parent's basement will tell you they really only understood Tenet the 37th time they rewatched it and that it's the greatest movie ever made.

One huge fan even admitted that because Tenet was made by Nolan, the movie is automatically great and it's our problem if we don't like it. Okay...

Tenet is truly a real-life example of The Emperor's New Clothes.

Maybe hard to see but balling my eyes out, I don’t think I blinked for two hours! Coolest shit I have ever seen!

I wish I was a bit more high, but also not sure my brain could keep up!

This movie was insanely well done!!

A critic for a leading paper once said he loves to sit as close as possible. He likes to be absorbed in the movie. That’s a little close for me though- my neck would be screaming. Glad you liked it- my son is super excited… will have to buy some tickets now!

Glad you mentioned it bud, just saw it. Not at all what I thought based on the previews. My son and I liked it. Looks like they’re setting up for a 4th.

Anyone see Sinners yet? Getting good reviews and I'm a sucker for a good vampire flick. Wife doesn't do horror movies though so I need a horror-movie girlfriend now
I finally got around to watching Sinners. There was so much hype around this movie. People are saying it’s hands down the best horror movie of 2025. It’s not. It takes and hour and a half before anything horror related even happens. When it finally does get good, it’s like the Temu version of the end of From Dusk Till Dawn. I was really looking forward to watching Sinners. I wanted to like it, but it was just so boring. From Dusk Till Dawn is much better. I grew up on vampire movies like The Lost Boys, so my taste isn’t what today’s generation is into, I guess.

As far as the best horror movie of the year claim goes, I’d give that to Weapons. The pacing is well done. It keeps your attention. It does bounce around a bit in terms of the timeline, but it’s done that way to keep you interested and keep you guessing, which it does effectively. It’s a dark, yet fun movie. It’s so different from anything else I’ve seen. It’s refreshing to me when a movie can get you locked in and keep you there while actually being good and different all at the same time. I definitely recommend it.

Yeah, I grew up on Lost Boys, From Dusk Til Dawn, etc. and was letdown by the hype around Sinners as well.

It had some moments, but overall didn't live up to the expectations. And the vampires singing and doing some Irish Jig was just fucking weird.

The wife and I saw (and really liked) Manchester by the sea the other day. Not a new one obv but we never got around to watching it when it first came out. Great acting, touching story/characters and slowly (nicely) paced.

Good fit for people who bitch (like myself) about these new films with CGI overuse, dumb plots and shallow characters.

If you've never watched it, it is a rite of passage:

Once you've watched it there are hours of great reading available.

With an IMDB rating of 3,6 I’d need a compelling sales pitch to give it a go :)
Cult classic. Watch it 3 or 4 times then watch The Disaster Artist. Highly recommend. Best bad movie of all time. Even better than Tiptoes.

@Pinkdan will co-sign.
