Hey guys. I’m new to this forum and also new to all the terminology. One thing I know for sure is I’m not alone in the appreciation of the Paulson mold.

Being late to the game, help me understand if any Paulson molds are currently producing any fantasy or home sets. Why terminology do in need to understand to research this and are there any site selling them? I’m interested in anything that uses Top Hat molds, sharp edges, bright colors etc.

Currently in production? Set names and links if you have them.

Used Paulson sets sold by trusted sites?

Group buys I can get in on?

I’m not wavy enough to navigate the secondary market just yet.

Thanks in advance.

Paulson is not producing any home sets. Hasn't for quite a while.

Keep checking the classifieds as stuff comes up there routinely. Keep you eyes peeled for periodic sales from @TheChipRoom. Spend a bunch of money on the Tiger Palace chips when they come available later this month as they are all very brightly colored and are brand new.

Welcome to the addiction. My advice is to not rush into anything as this can be a very expensive hobby. Take your time, read a lot of what's here and get samples so you can get a true feel for what you like.

Apache poker chips is one dealer that sells used casino sets. If your patient and then lightning fast you can wait for a TheChipRoom sale which are held often semi annually +/- by a member here. Many of the sets built and pictured on this site are from those sales. Other members hold sales of sets as well in multiples but usually individually owned sets and more often racks/barrels of certain sets.

As for the home production Paulson's, those have long since ended production. They can only be bought on the used market...or if into the Tiger insanity look up Tiger Casino chips for what is a new production Paulson set that "slipped past the goalie". Otherwise Paulson(GPI) only deals with the commercial market.

We can buy
clay customs from Classic Poker Chip co.

Ceramic customs from BRpropoker (domestic)
Or Tina (Chinese ceramics)

Lots of everything - PCF classifieds

My motivation is I need chips for cash games. I have 800 China clays for tourneys. And thinking I’d rather spend $2000+ on a cash set, for example rather than $400-500 on the same denominations in dunes or pharaoh china clay. Assuming the Paulson would be an investment and the China clays would depreciate. Is that sound logic?

Sounds like the perfect idea to me. I'd much rather spend money on nice things than cheap out if possible.

The Paulsons could turn into an investment as well like you mentioned.

For the most part.....so long as the market for chips lasts. Though this logic generally holds true that at worst you would lose less selling a Paulson than a commercial mass produced chip, at least to this market.

Some increase in value, others hold to inflation (roughly). Chips in better condition also seem to sell/resell for more.

Is the Tiger Palace primary Cash set overpriced? Compared to used from the same mold, let’s say. Is Tiger hyped and inflated now?

Also is the Tiger Palace literally the same quality texture, weight, etc as original legacy Top Hat Paulson?

Ps not crazy about the pattern on the 100 I prefer the top hat orange/grey. and no 20 :/ everything else is amazing.

Maybe I should just get some key west. Those are nice right??

Thanks so much man, this is super helpful. Looks like a nice looking chip set. Is the quality the same as legacy Paulsons?
These ARE Paulsons... this set got made without them catching on that it wasn't a real casino... if you are going to invest in an awesome cash set, then this Saturday or next Saturday are the days to pull the trigger.

While chips have been going up in value, especially here in the last several years, purchasing chips as an investment isn't a particularly wise idea. There's no guarantee that they will increase in value or price, particularly when you are spending $6 per chip to start.
I do love poker but I’m an OG magic the gathering collector of maybe 20+ years. So I could flip a few cards and prolly pick up a set of Tiger Palace. Only the best magic cards went up in value the most. Paul sons are the best right? Thinking I could flip a few cards and get some Paulson. Diversify and collect. With this logic they should only go up right?

The collector and secondary market for chips is a bit different and likely smaller than for collectable cards, MTG or sports.

Logic makes little sense for us here. We're willing to spend large sums of money on small clay discs. That said, I don't think the "collector" market here or for playable sets of chips even on eBay matches what the collector market for cards is. Different history, different end-use (card collectors mostly collect cards to hold and possibly resell where we typically use our chips in games).

I will say that there are many manufacturers that are at the top as being the "best".

When many think about poker/casino chips, Paulson is the 1st that comes to mind. Primarily because they are still being used and they've been in use since the mid/late 60s up until the current day. So many are used to them and know the H&C mold, it's iconic. Along with that the older chips were "leaded" meaning they had lead mixed into the material that made them heavier than todays chips that have no lead content. Those are sought after more by many and I personally would have a leaded H&C set over something that is made today if its possible.

Along with Paulson at the top is TR King, in my opinion. Others may say otherwise, but that's how I see it. I know there are others like BCC (Blue Chip Company), B.C. Wills & Co., Jack Todd Co., Mason & Co. Taylor & Co., Matsui, Abbiati, Bud Jones and so much more. All those companies made a different type of chip. Many of them made compression molded chips and others made plastic chips. That's all up to personal preference and what you like/want to play with. If you look at my profile picture or the sets/chips that I collect you can quickly tell that I love TRKs. That's almost exclusively the only thing I want, unless I find Paulsons that I know are worth it for a good price, have an amazing history or something similar.

Another quick thing... take a look at the classifieds and look at what's for sale right now for example. I think on the first page its almost all Paulson chips. You'll see other chips for sale here and there, but Paulsons I think have the most attraction. TRK is up there, but the real ones know about those.

If you want something that's nice, affordable and will play with no problem, I'd say go with Paulsons. They're amazing chips, well worth the money and are made the same way they've always been, minus the lead. Quantities are out there, you can make an almost infinite amount of different sets and so much more.

This is super helpful, thanks so much for the thoughtful post and history. It will take me days and weeks to fully research those manufacturers. I will certainly check them out. Thanks.

Oh they’ll get played. Hopefully not with pizza hands. Is it safe to say the tigers at least won’t go down on value?

Are there any TR King sets currently available from retailers? Where can I start looking? Thx

Obviously, no guarantees but among all of the fantasy sets that’s been made, it’s probably one of the safest bets. The least likely Paulsons to get depreciated are probably leaded real casino THCs with shaped inlays.

Not really. You can get (over priced) singles/smaller amounts here or on eBay to check them out. But best bet is the classifieds on this site. Be aware that there is a huge difference between leaded and unleaded TRKs.

This is pretty much the only place you can find paulsons being bought/sold and traded with any regularity, of course eBay as well, but it’s usually overpriced stuff people have bought here in our classified section.

There’s tons of paulsons being traded in the classifieds, we are all building and adding into sets, changing our minds, reselling, trying combinations and basically just degenerating violently.

@TheChipRoom unleashes closed casino paulsons at least a few times a year. He sells them here. In his vendor section of this forum.

Some states allow resales after a casino closes or rebrands, or just gets new chips. Jim buys em and sells them to us at a pretty good fair price.

Definitely look at the last chip room sales, examine the sales that have happened for the past year or two there, it’s a pretty good example of what’s being regularly traded, and for what price people paid, (the fancy chips appreciate in value, even after a short time)

But it’s safe to say that Jim will find some nice chips again, (actually he has some for sale now I think) and when he does he releases them in a fire sale… the fancy chips sell out the first hour, so we pay attention.

Depending on your budget, and what you need, somebody here would happily sell you some paulsons haha.

There’s a rating system here, it’s pretty useful, if someone here has a good record of having bought and sold a lot of chips, it’s a pretty safe bet.

Good luck, and just do your research so you get what you want when you spend your dough.

It’s an addictive hobby. Be careful.

Having no better advice than the ones given to you above, I would insist on getting samples and taking your time.

I'm also a former magic the gathering player and collector and have also sold a few cards to buy some clay chips. As such, I somewhat regret my "chaos orb" card in beta version...
