Official Dungeons & Dragons Thread... (6 Viewers)

D&D in HS and MTG later...still a voracious reader of SciFi and Fantasy.
MTG is awesome. Still have about 1/4 of my collection after selling most off. I kept around a few decks so I can tool around with friends every now and then.

I’m digging 5E thus far, but it’s been only one session, and with a teenage DM, who knows what she’s doing mostly, but isn’t experienced like I’m used to. Don’t get me wrong, she’s turning into a great story teller, and is doing mostly good... but For instance;

<snip>

Hopefully she’ll get there. Still having fun bonding with my daughter.

Don't get too caught up on the rules so that it becomes a sticking point. The best part of this is that your daughter and her friends are learning about co-operative storytelling, which is much more important and immersive than the actual mechanics. They will get used to the rules in time, especially when they learn it gives them advantage to recall them. Game on!

After some rigorous negotiations with Payton (daughter), I’ve been allowed to keep the following sets of dice...

I got the D&D Basic and Expert sets as a kid. I read every page (including the modules) several times, but I was never able to find the right group to play with until college.

Over the next few years we met 2-3 times a month, playing D&D, Cyberpunk, Paranoia, and Vampire: The Masquerade. It was great fun, largely thanks to the players in the group and the storytelling skill of our GM.

I'm pretty sure I still have most of my books and dice in a box somewhere around here.

Pics of the old dice...? You're not the only person on this forum that has spent a few minutes dragging out their old D&D crap after reading this thread. :)

Yes! 100% this about the old dice! And I don’t mean the paper ones you taped together, rather the ones that would erode at the edges so that your orange d6 didn’t have a pointy corner on it.

Played AD&D with older brothers and friends since mid-80s, and only about 3 years ago did we make the switch to 5. Total mystery to me, but they DM, I roll, and engage with gusto. Great times when you get the right group. Creation at its finest.

Too many dice? That's like saying too many chips.

Sad part is, I know my big bag of dice went missing in a move. Hopefully someday it reappears. I need moar dice.

Also not shown, 3d6 inflatable dice, used for life-sized games.

That’s so awesome! I remember fondly the allure of these polyhedron devices of chance.. when I was a very young D&D player, the dice fascinated me... ya, I know I had way more dice at one point..and we have about double what I showed (Payton took half).. pretty sure after 30 years in storage, a bunch went missing...

What brand are this metal dice and where do you get them?

Played with my nephew a couple days ago and he had a set of metal dice. Very cool. Nice feel and roll. Also, interesting amount of natural 20s...

So my daughter’s D&D group experiences girl drama I never experienced as a kid.. thus, the game scheduled for tonight did not happen (exactly as planned). Instead, I decided I’d have both Evan and Payton (13 and 15) create characters and we’d play informally just to gain experience as players in the 5E system... Payton invited a friend (who WAS available) to give us three players.

I was inspired by watching this D&D Starter Kit video, where an experienced DM (with decent video production skills), sits a few folks down and runs them through a short adventure... I watched all the videos in the adventure, then decided I should just host (after all Payton’s friends leaked out. By 100% pure coincidence, I selected THIS adventure module to use. It’s literally one of the first modules (B1)... and it turns out, it’s the identical adventure used in the video above. Ha!

Enjoyed a nice breakfast while perusing the upcoming adventure... A good DM prepares...

Here’s a few pics of the impromptu setup. Wasn’t fancy, but we did listen to the Witcher 3 video game soundtrack... highly recommended by Matt Mercer (if you don’t know who this is, he’s a rockstar DM)...

And yes, you’ll notice we did use LEGO minifigs as our adventuring party.. we have more legos than sense, so we had quite the selection...

Dare I introduce you to Dwarven Forge dungeon terrain, especially the pre-painted kind? Might be as or more dangerous to your wallet than PCF....

I’ve already purchased a couple dry-erase battle mats (on order). I can’t imagine purchasing a ton of extra foam/plastic dungeon terrain... tho we could use one of the several LEGO castles we have... hmmmm....

And then again, when I started chipping, I couldn’t have imagined spending the money I have on chips...

I would totally be up for it... My wife may have other thoughts on me burning an extra day of vacation :p if there was enough interest I think I'd make it happen tho

Has me contemplating a Fat Tire table mod... to construct a topper for the table, with an inset flush mounted TV monitor for battle maps...

New Minis!!!

So I went searching for new miniatures to use in the game... Boy, these are expensive. Even plastic unpainted ones are like $5 each. In bulk, you can get the pricing down to $3/each, but it's not cheap. I found a CL deal that I couldn't pass up. This guy (buys lots at auction) picked up these minis as part of some other stuff he was after. He had no interest in the minis, and posted them for sale. He had tons of people asking him to ship, but he refused. I made the drive to Milwaukee, and he even met me at Potowatomi casino... These are actual lead minis from the 70's and 80's, and some of the monsters are discontinued and quite rare. They obviously don't show as much detail unpainted, but I'm hoping to paint them at some point... (at least prime them to reduce any lead exposure). Total count (didn't count) is well over 150... The seller claimed 180. It doesn't really matter... I could probably sell the dragon for what I paid for all of them.

ps. I won a few hundo playing pokerz :)
