Lego as an adult? (1 Viewer)

Throw out my toys?? Lego of my Lego.....

There were no video games when i was a kid. Pong came out at some point, but we didn't have the money. So legos were the way to pass the time. We have my kids huge bin to other smaller kids in the neighborhood when mine got older.

I have a huge collection. About 6 large plastic totes. I also have a large collection of complete vintage sets from my childhood. I will never get rid of my Lego.

It never occurred to me until I reached adulthood that LEGO is pretty expensive. I had a few sets as a kid and was able to turn them into whatever my imagination could come up with, but I wonder now if my parents really had to sacrifice to get me some of the bigger sets.

I loved Lego as a kid. What turned me off were the pre-packaged "kits". I loved building what I could dream up in my head, not what someone at Lego created for me to make. If I wanted to do that, there were plenty of model kits on the market already (though likely not so much any more). Today, Lego is just a more detailed IKEA book-shelf.

Thousands of dollars worth of Legos stolen during Grandville break-in

GRANDVILLE, Mich. -- A family in Grandville had their home broken into while they slept, but instead of taking electronics and money, the thief stole thousands of dollars worth of Legos.

The bandit did more than steal Legos; he stole a lifetime of memories for Brian Richards. Not much is left of the collection he's had since he was 5 years old.

The Legos filled an entire room, and took him decades to collect.

"It's upsetting that they stole something that I've been building over the course of years," Richards said.

Richards values the collection at around $7,000, but he says it's not about the money. Richards said two days before the robbery, his wife was working on an anniversary set. His two children also enjoyed building with his collection.

"The Lego itself isn't special but the memory attached with [building] together is," he said.

He's hoping the police can track down a suspect. He said he's changed all the locks to his house and is going to get surveillance cameras. Until an arrest is made, he's trying to remain positive.

"So there's a couple silver linings," he said. "The first is we get to relive some of these memories. But the other is the fact that they left all the instruction booklets so that we can find all of them again."

Piece by piece, he says he will get his collection back the way it was. He said the Legos are covered under his insurance policy.

Richards is also asking people to keep an eye out at places like pawn shops and on sites like craigslist for a large amount of Legos being sold.

Grandville Police confirm they are investigating the case. Anyone with information is asked to call them at 616-538-6110 or Silent Observer at 616-774-2345.

My most recent sets, both Xmas gifts.

First is the Nolan trilogy Tumbler Batmobile, with Lego Batman and Joker:

Last was the living room set from The Big Bang Theory:

My daughter isn't too into Lego yet, if ever. She likes helping and watching me make models and then she plays with them. My sets are glued and just for display. Yes, I am
Lord Business (Lego Movie reference).

True to a point, but you can combine kits in rather unique ways (I know my kids have...). And you can still buy the "bucket of bricks"...you don't have to buy kits.

I used to play with Legos non-stop when I was a kid.

Just built this recently. Hope they do more of them. It is pretty amazing how much of it works. Engine, transmission, etc...

Just spotted this thread. Awesome. New Millenium Falcon is being built this Christmas holiday (maybe I fall somewhere between adult and child)... Never too old.

I had some generic brinks that I found as a kid, but creativity is not my thing. I like it, just don’t have it.

As an adult, I don’t have time for video games, poker, or sports, let alone something like legos or puzzles - but I would if I could.

I am glad that my kids enjoy it, and therefor encourage it. Or I guess mom does since they don’t come home from the store without one. This was his 4 year old year, with 3 more big boxes to go.

edit:
Also stays up every night to “read” various instructions that he hides under his bed and pillow. Figure he’s soon to be one of you brickophiles.
