Holy grail Paulson set? (3 Viewers)

We've seen this question before and in my honest opinion, the true answer lies each owner of their respective chip set that they deem to be their Holy Grail. Scattered answers out there and surely there's some sets that are both rare and unique that they'll stand out among the rest but there's always going to be someone who disagrees. There's a ton of stuff, as per the answers given already that stick out like PCA, Lakeshores, etc... Just depends on 1) who you're asking and following that answer 2) do you really like that set? Given you're fairly new to chipping, you'll start narrowing it down based on the mold you like, history of the set, colors, and many other factors.

Hope you don't mind answering a question with a question, but are you more into the old school look, somewhat in the middle, or more modern?

If it makes anyone feel better lakeshores and giraffes would do pretty horribly according to that scale but I get that’s it’s a “casino” level scale not just what’s playable for most peoples home games.
I think they do okay -- better than the Jacks; prolly 5-7 range without actually doing a tally on either one.

Lots of sets score < 2 or even negative numbers.

I personally think the scorecard is subjective. Someone that grew up in the old days could be using it to score a set, Millennial or even Gen X. Scores are going to be all over the board.

I certainly cherish all my sets and likely favor my AS hotstamps the most. However, I don't really associate any set I own with the vernacular of "grail".

...semantics, I know.

I doubt the scores would vary much. The only two subjective areas are spot/colors and inlay design, everything else is pretty straight-forward.

Never too late to have your own created!!!! NEVER :sneaky:

Pretty sure they would. Not everybody is going to score the same, not even close actually. Some prefer super modern looking, glossy inlay, non-leaded etc.. and therefore that set would take a shit on that scorecard. Everybody is unique and has their own taste.

True. I know a few that prefer no lead and glossy.

I want that sh*t to be like a brick, clank clank mother f*cker. I don't want that glossy bald headed mess, give me some texture, I wanna feel that grab in the middle of my clank clank so when I'm shoving my chips in the pot they don't fall over they stand there and have presence, because they mean business in the middle of that f*cking pot

Not sure I quite understood what you mean Brie. Can you please tell us how you really feel?

Major differences in scores across a large group of people scoring? I think not.... overall, the minor differences of individuals will get balanced out.

But the best part of the grading scale is that each individual can use it (or parts of it) to 'rank' sets on a scale that is meaningful to them. Just another tool to help in making difficult first-world chipping decisions. :)

On the contrary, there aren't minor differences between people's tastes. We're not all born to love the same things and therefore, yes the scores will have major differences from one person to another. We're not chip robots here pumped out of a machine programmed to like the same stuff. Doesn't work that way.

The biggest problem with the rating scale, to me, is the relative point values. RHC is not -1 in my book. It's more like -100.
Meaning, the rest of the categories become irrelevant.

edit: OK, maybe that's a little harsh. It's more just a commentary that I don't think the categories are equivalent. And that every person probably weighs each category very differently.

I believe bricks and “clank clanks” are not terms referred to in this particular brand. “Presence” would also be a matter of opinion to many.
There is however “bricks”, “clank clanks” and presence commonly used in describing other types of chips though.
@FordPickup92, I believe you are jonesing for some cards? :ROFLMAO:

100%.

A useful way to convert the OPs question from a matter of subjective taste into an objective matter is to reframe it as "Regardless of your opinion, what do you think most other people would consider the best, most coveted, most attractive set - and do you even think there's a single set that most other people would agree on?"

I think most people think the greatest classic rock song ever is Stairway to Heaven even though I can name dozens of better ones.

What's the Stairway to Heaven of PCF?

Whatever Dave says it is.

Detroit Jacks scorecard:
  • Paulson chips, +1
  • leaded formula, 0
  • RHC mold, -1
  • IHC mold, +1
  • primary/secondary sets, +1
  • mint/uncirculated chips, +1
  • full range of denominations, +1
  • above average spot/color choices, +1
  • glossy inlay, -1
  • inlay design, 0
Total score: 4

And fwiw, PCA scored a 8. Perfect score is 10.
I’m surprised people dislike the glossy inlays. They’re much more interesting to me than the presently available alternative

Personally, whether chips come from a real casino or not if pretty irrelevant. I mean, so there was a Horseshoe casino in whositville, middle of nowhere... is that really a plus vs. a well designed fantasy set? Not in my world.

The rest of the ranking list works for me though.

Wait what’s this we have here, two different people with different tastes in chips? NO FKN WAY?!
