I've bought some poker sets in the past but want to put together a micro stakes set of Paulson chips - 5c x 100, 25c x 200, $1 x 200, $5 x 100

I'm sort of lost on how to go about this correctly. I'm assuming I'll have to do this in increments, buying a rack or two at a time. Are there any specific casino chips I should be targeting?

Also, what should I use for the fracs since casinos typically don't have those denominations?

I'm just curious if there are any best practices when doing this so I can avoid making costly mistakes.

Spinetti's has some starburst Paulson chips they just listed today. Check their new post in their forum. Starbursts are non denoms and work great for fracs...or you could get four separate colors to use for even your dollar and five.

Only problem here is that you get “locked in” (of course you can mix molds, but not many do) to THC’s, potentially increasing your costs.

A lot depends on your budget tbh. If you can afford to make some mistakes and corrections along the way vs. if you want something quick, easy to acquire, and more affordable makes a huge difference in approach, imo.

This is slightly off tangent

You can play $0.01/$0.02 or $0.02/$0.05 if you get some brown chips. Worth considering. Once my cash game played $0.10/$0.20 and some people only brought $20 so clearly playing outside of their limits, playing with pennies may keep the game going longer for some of your guests.

If you buy tigers you won't want to buy anything else, for what it's worth. I bet even the $0.01 "tiger" relabels on solid brown will look fire.

If you have time and can wait for chips to pop up, there is a good chance some murdered RHC chips will show up that would allow you to just order labels to make your own Nickels. Chips labeled as quarters pop up occasionally so you may be able to find those without much trouble, or similarly label yourself without them being too expensive. Best advice I could give would be to decide what your priority is. Do you want the chips to really go together and have good spot progression, color variety, etc. or are you open to just finding some $1 chips you like and then building around those? Or it could just be that you want specific colors for specific denominations, and as long as those are met, you'll be happy. Once you decide how you want to approach it, and what you want to prioritize, I think that will make the rest of the process quite a bit easier

Agree that you should set a budget for your set (“adventure” might be a better word) before you think about “what” to pursue.

Only you can decide the chips to go for based on colors and designs you like. Given you want to build a micro set, you’re going to have to find chips to relabel for your lower denoms. Although $0.25 chips exist, you’re looking at mostly hot stamps and/or pricier chips in general.

I’d suggest starting with your $0.25 (if not relabeling or it’s already relabeled) and $1 as they’ll be your workhorse chips, and building around them. Then you can consider color, spot combos that you like for the other denoms. As suggested, starbursts are a versatile way to build a THC set that’s budget friendly but mostly limited to solids. RHC will give you the best bang for your buck. Good luck!

I was in the same boat not long ago. I started with a rack of $1 Foxwoods and that set the hook. There’s a bunch of live casino chips in good condition if that’s your thing. Gotta be patient because you never know what’s going to pop up, but at the same time quick to act on something you like.

I did browse their site, looks good. Seems like these are pretty hard to find.

Love the flexibility of being about to go down to penny stakes

Good to know there will be some buying opportunities. I'm still trying to figure out my strategy, but I'm gaining clarity.

Awesome thanks -I do see the RHC's going for less.

$1 - $100 are pretty common. When you get to $500+ they start to get expensive.

.25, .50 cent aren't very hard to find, but tend to get pricey. Often you will see racks of these for $2+ per chip.

.05 and .10 are pretty rare now. I don't recall seeing racks of these recently and would expect to pay $4+ depending on rarity.

Like above, your best option for fracs that show the denoms is to do a re-label or over label. Or just be happy with non-denom (starburst, etc.)
