What is it?
It's an intimate cash set for my weekly family poker night. I'm going to use it to teach my three daughters how to play poker. We'll be learning about game dynamics and the math. So it's also ahhh educational and part of our pandemic homeschooling curriculum.
What's the story?
Emerald City's theme is all about deception. In the book by L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Emerald City is a "humbug". No-one is allowed to enter unless they've had green spectacles locked onto their heads, which give everything a green tint and help create the illusion that the city is built out of sparkling emeralds.

I thought this trickery was a neat metaphor for poker - it's about flummoxing your opponents, telling stories and trying to uncover the truth, pull back the curtain to reveal the wizard!
The name "Emerald City" also sounds like something a casino would be called. And casinos are like Emerald City - they're not what they seem. Sloping-floored pleasure palaces promising riches and magic, but ultimately designed to part punters from their dollars. Again, part of the deception theme.
It's also about friendship and fellowship - going on an adventure with a cast of characters. Full of ups and downs, thrills and spills. Ultimately it's about my wee clan playing and growing together as individuals and a family as we go through life. Having fun, facing adversity, learning about our shortcomings as individuals and overcoming them together, as a family. Being there for each other, whatever the weather.
It's also quite possible I've overthought all this lol
The chips and colors
The base colors on each chip are a nod to some of the characters in the books and movie.
Tin Woodman (25c):
Pattern: 2V12
Base - Gray
Spot 1 - Retro Red
Spot 2 - Gray
Dorothy ($1):
Pattern: 614
Base - DG Peacock
Spots - DG Peach
Cowardly Lion ($5):
Pattern: 3ATRIM
Base - DG Tiger
Spot 1 - Retro Lavender
Spot 2 - DG Yellow
Spot 3 - Light Green
Scarecrow ($20):
Pattern: 6D18
Base - Canary
Spot 1 - DG Pink
Spot 2 - Light Blue
Flying monkeys (with a smidge of Wicked Witch of the West in the green spot!) ($100):
Pattern: 4TA181418
Base - Blurple
Spots 1 & 3 - DG Arc Yellow
Spot 2 - DG Green
I wanted to give a nod to the villains in the lineup, a reference to the villains at the poker table. And as a young kid, when I first saw the Wizard of Oz I was both fascinated and a bit freaked out by the witch's army of flying monkeys!
Emerald City (promo chip):
Pattern: 1/4 Pie
Base: Green
Spots: DG Green
A-side: green spectacles, required to enter Emerald City
B-side: 'courage potion' (in the book the wizard gives the Cowardly Lion a courage potion to drink, not a medal)
The mold
I wanted a mold that reflected the Emerald City theme. I've always loved the MD-50 / DIASQ. And its alternating diamonds and rectangles make me think of cut gemstones (ie emeralds!).
So it felt like the perfect choice to reflect both the theme and the artwork. (y)
Special thanks to @David Spragg for making my chips.
Extra special thanks to @MatB for helping me out with shipping - you rock man. Loooooooovvvvvvvvve you! xoxox
