Chips that everyone else likes but just don’t do it it for you… and go (1 Viewer)

Interesting... after @upNdown comment on TRKs being 38mm... I thought, there is no way. I mean I have never measured but can't be that much of a difference... went to the races last night... had a few Brews and decided that had to be a troll post! Woke up this morning and yup curiosity got me, so if it was a trolling post you win buddy!

But to those that are wondering... they are not 39mm

But pretty damn close!! definitely not 38mm though!

But you got me Bro, I had to check

mid you put a few in a stack of paulsons you can tell right away they’re smaller

I think this thread is quite interesting... Especially for custom CPCs. With those, it's even more about the creator's interests and tastes and less about what the community in general thinks of them. When the creator originally would post about their custom set, nobody would come out and say "wow, those are horrible, did you even try?".

... I wonder if my CPCs, if they ever actually get here, would show up in a thread like this. Not that I would care, I think I'm still going to love them that's all that matters.

There are some custom sets that (deservedly) get wide acclaim among the rest of the membership. Those are fair game in this thread for those folks who are underwhelmed by them.

But yeah, definitely, your customs should be for you and who cares whether other people love them or hate them. :)

  • Giant inlays - just no
  • Photo giant inlays - anyone have some dice chips instead?
  • Plaques - concept is cool, but not really fun or practical
  • Well used chips - they aren’t buttery… they are butt. Excellent+ or gtfo.
  • Hotstamps - they wear off if you actually play frequently, hard to see in poor lighting, and the hotstamp reminds me of some cheap crap knickknack that was cheaply branded like the way you used to get a day planner stamped with your initials free with your subscription to Life magazine.
Wow, yes, this exactly!

I've said this before, but these are great chips for people who don't know the difference between the word "capital" and the word "capitol."

Kinda like wearing a "kick me" sign to a convention of English teachers...
I often wondered the same. What were they trying to convey?

I guess the designer was stating that Austin is the Capital of Texas and not referring to the Capitol building in Austin

Should they be fair game though? just because they have wide acclaim doesn’t mean the person who created them didn’t put themself out there, and wouldn’t be upset about their set being trashed. sure, there are a few of these personal custom sets that get a lot of love that I don’t quite get, but what purpose does it serve to potentially hurt someone’s feelings?

Yea, I always took it to mean The Capital (Poker) Room

Maybe you are right. Sorry. I felt that the P&P set is so loved by most of the forum that hearing a couple of people disliking them wouldnt do much harm. But I certainly see the point you guys are making, and I'll try to keep it to myself next time.

I think even if the label read Capitil Room, I'd still want to have them . . .they just look so dam delicious together

The Capital Room chips have a photo of the capitol (building) which is located in the capital (city) of Texas.

Grammar nazis can rest easy :)

I always figured it was an intentional play on words relating poker/financial capital to the the capitol building.

Thanks, great questions.

If you put your own custom designed set out there, then they become free for discussion as would any other public item. Otherwise, the polite course of action would be to provide respectful feedback when asked or to otherwise keep negative opinions private.

What is “out there” and what’s the line? I don’t know yet. I say it’s beyond design feedback, celebrating arrival, or adding to the DB. I think self-nominating your set for best (whatever) award is probably on the other side of the line.

This is conceptual, and not specific to P&P. I don’t know enough details about that set to suggest where it might fall.

If I really cared about everyone’s grammar I would have a full time job on this site! I much prefer the beer business.

I just found it odd to use capital when it shows a pic of the Capitol. I am sure the designer had his reason. Either way, I never thought these chips were that great and not a fan of the inlay.

I am sure the designer had his reason.
This question shocks me. I always assumed it was just a mistake. And let me be honest - I’m over educated and I don’t think I was aware that there were two different meanings to the word, depending on spelling, until reading about in the context of these chips.

I feel like we would start a new post of "chips you absolutely love" and we would get all the same pictures that are in this thread.........
Isnt this basically every thread on pcf.... I did say that out loud did i... :p

Hear hear! I just don't get it...
So, I agree, that I could never actually buy them. But that's mostly because of the price and the fact that I'm not super into the chicken theme for an entire set.

... But with that said, I actually do get it. The colors of the chips are fantastic. And the chicken theme, although a bit goofy, can totally be up someone's alley especially if they want silly-themed chips

And I think that goes for a lot of the sets that have been listed here. Although they might not be my cup of bourbon, I can understand why they might appeal to somebody else. Very few chips / molds would fall into the WTF category for me.

Can't have everyone liking the same chips otherwise it would be impossible to afford them :)

The labels on the PNY is part of what I like lol

The chips that seem to be adored by many but just don't do anything for me are the IOC chips

Thank God.

These are the ugliest chips I’ve ever seen. Please send me any spares you have so I can dispose of them properly.

I'm with you on the IOC KC, and I'm in KC!

I thought about getting a set when they hit the market during last year's Black Friday sale and regretted when I didn't because of the KC connection. But there are other Missouri casino sets that blow away the IOC KC, in my opinion.
Exactly! Ugliest chips I’ve ever seen. Send me your last complete sample set please.

I REALLY don't like Pillage & Plunder... Like, at all.

I just wish people wouldn’t replicate aria $5,000 in any way. This set is beautiful if you piece it out as if you were to us them in play. Super classy colors.

The $100 chip though... that is 10,000x a “hate it or love it” scenario. If that was in a game I was to play in, that is all I would be able to see. (Edit: On it’s own it’s super beautiful holy shit don’t get me wrong)

$500 and the Main $1,000 chips are something that should be in a museum. The secondary 1k has a good little meme/pun about it too that makes it priceless. Wether he meant to “catch em all” or not

Anything with oversized labels just dont work for me:

PNY, Vineyard etc..

Also Crystal Parks, just dont float the boat

Funny, that’s exactly the way I felt until I bought a set of PNYs. Figured I just wanted to see them in person and would quickly discard. Now I love them.
I’m not gonna lie, at some point I will own a set of PNY. I would still say they are objectively ugly haha, but there is just something about them that is compelling. It may because I used to live and work in the city and miss it a bit. The design is kind of garish or kitschy, but for some reason it kind of works for what NYC is. The images and poor photography are just classic New York. Kind of reminds me of the opening sequence in the Taxi tv show. If it were some sort of modern design for a NYC chip it wouldn’t be compelling at all.

But whatever it is, it is probably the same reason I have and love these coffee mugs that a New Yorker would understand. The coffee was always way too hot and terrible, but none the less it evokes strong memories and feelings of the city…

Solids or hot stamps, put them together only gets worse for me.
I know people love them but been in the set collecting game for a long time now and still have not warmed up to them.
Also brown chips in general do not do it for me. I do not love over sized labels much either although if the rest of the chip is great I can probably deal with it.
But that is the beauty, to each their own. It is fine to have your own preference just do not put others down for their preference.
All my dislikes are gold for others and that is great.
