Before 2006, if I have my dates correct, the only spot pattern available from ASM (later became CPC) for everyday hacks like myself that didn't own a casino was 312. You know, this:

So when Jim announced to ChipTalk that members could order from a handful of spot designs previously unknown, I and several others jumped on it. From this came my tournament set, which uses artwork from my father. We did this as a project together while he was battling cancer, so it has special meaning to me. One side of the chip has the "Dano Poker" logo, the other side has an inlay specific for that denomination. The pictures will make it clearer (please forgive me for using a '$' on a tournament chip!):

The thing that bugged me from day 1 was that the 500s were thinner than the others; you could almost fit 21 in a rack. 20 of them was really close to the height of 19 1000s (see picture). And the colors on the chip do not bring joy. I only had 100 of them made, and wish I had more. So I have been thinking about remaking them when CPC opens back up for business.

The set is made of:
400 greens
400 blacks
100 lavenders
400 yellows
200 grays
40 whites (which basically never see the table)

I want to take advantage of the new color and/or spot options that have opened up since then, if possible. I don't know if I'll be allowed to only make 160 or 200 chips, but that is what I would do if I could, and since this is an add-on maybe I can. So for the moment, let's assume I can make 160 new 500s.

If I go with Blurple as the base, I feel like I need a lot of spots to make it visible and obvious compared to the black 100. Like one of these:

Blurple4DSA316.webp
Blurple4V12.webp

I'm also considering going with a pink (not DG) base, which would definitely not get confused with any other chip regardless of spot choices. For example:

Pink3V12.webp

I guess I'm looking for guidance / feedback here. It feels weird to have one chip in the whole set not have 1/4" spots, but ultimately I'd like to at least consider something else even if it "breaks" the set in some definition. Thoughts?

Also looking for anyone who also made a set during this time, and remembers how this all came to be. Who knew almost 20 years could fly by so fast?

I was in the same boat as you with that first open ASM buy. IIRC it was literally as soon as that buy was done they just opened it up to everything they had at the time as far as spot patterns.

I actually think your current 500 looks great and fits the set well. If you’re really all fired to change it, I’d go with the pink personally. CPC Blurple is pretty dark and even with different spot patterns and what not might not work right next to the Black 100.

I know this is probably been bugging you for a while, but maybe sit with us a few more days and think about it.

@suchj0sh @MeridianFC Thanks for the feedback. I still have plenty of time to think about it, but I am nervous about blurple being too dark so my latest thoughts are going with pink if I go forward with this. The CPC pink is rather muted and I think works to my advantage here (my set is not full of bright colors as you can see).

Regarding the 2005/2006 events: yeah it was a little odd, the new spot patterns were opened up "exclusively" for ChipTalk members, and then soon after they and a bunch of others patterns were added to the ASM website for the general public. At least that is how I remember it going down. So glad we aren't still stuck with just 312. :)

The stack height would bother me too.

I like the colors and spot progression on this set, it holds up after all these years. You and your father did a good job! The family connection makes the set special. Is there another generation with an interest in poker or poker chips (e.g. a child or nephew/niece)? Maybe getting a younger family member involved in choosing colors, spot progression, and possibly new label for the $500 might enrich the family history of the set and also make the fact the $500s are different and literally younger meaningful.

Did you consider 414418? It keeps the pattern of using 1/4in spots while being a more exciting pattern.

@GreekRedEye Yeah, my son will inherit these, and he has a good eye for color so I will definitely run any ideas by him too. Great suggestion to include the next generation! Thanks for the kind words.

I have looked at some more complex patterns that include the 1/4" spot for continuity, for example:
Pink2V12214.webp

But they get expensive fast! So that becomes part of the equation for sure. But you only live once!

That’s exactly what I thought!
To be honest, I really like your current chip! It’s super cool, and I really love your classic colors. I understand your itch about having even stacks. But is it really that important? Once the game starts, the neat stacks won’t matter at all. If you do decide to redo the 500, I’d go with that!

Plus the inverted spot gives a completely different feel to the chip.

The new pink isn’t as classic as the purple, and having too much blurple will make the $100 stacks look dirty.

I also like the current color. The retro lavender they have now is a great color. I'm not sure I'd go blurple since you have a black chip.
That's strange that the chip is noticeably thinner like that - maybe they cut you a deal when they hear the story?
