First Table Build - Tools Needed? (3 Viewers)

Holy cow that’s a lot of staples. I staple 90 degs from how you did it using far less staples.

When I was doing it 4-handed with @ruskba's help, we were able to get the staples 90 degs for max efficiency. With only 2-hands and far less freedom of movement, this was the best I could do while still having the staple gun clear my knuckles. :confused

lol, not my pics, that write-up was a cut/paste from *the* original guide on pulling a rail from Scott Keen's poker table forum, circa 2005, preserved for prosperity :)

I do kind of miss my flip phone though, those were simpler days...

QUESTION:

How do you guys get folds out of the poker felt / layout before it's applied?
Just an iron on low?

Iron on low for the major creases, but I've found the adhesive and the spreading of the felt take care of the wrinkles in short order.
Put a bedsheet between the felt and the iron to avoid overheating.

Like it's been said, iron on low and with a cloth - bed sheet, handkerchief, etc in between to avoid melting it. You can also potentially gently steam it to release some wrinkles.

I've been doing a lot of research on upholstery, because the hand-stretch-staple approach just seems stupid to me for the rail... there just has to be a better way.

After some poking, I've stumbled across a couple tools that might be helpful, and I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried them.

Namely, a fabric stretcher (which I just ordered for the inside ring of my build)...

and a gooseneck webbing stretcher...

The webbing stretcher is really intended for furniture webbing, but I think it just might work with the more durable vinyl we use on our rails. If you have a 3/4" rail support ring, you could rest the rubber edge against it, push the pins through the vinyl, and stretch it out in a levering/rotating motion instead of hand pulling it.

Has anyone ever attempted this?

One tip for tight vinyl rails is to compress the foam while wrapping/stretching the vinyl.

I always wrap rails on the floor (not elevated), so I compress the section I'm working on by pressing down with my knees -- it makes stretching easier, and the resulting wrap is tigher after the foam expands when released.

If I have a second person available, I have them stand on the rail section to compress the foam (much easier, and less wear/tear on my knees).

I've used the puller - worked well, but I used the wrong vinyl - mine had little to no stretch. One of my rails has warped, so this spring I will be doing new ones with whisper vinyl and probably in rail cup holders (the horror). I'll also be attempting two new table builds.

My fabric stretchers arrived, and they seem like they might be a real life saver. I’m already figuring out ways to leverage them against the rail to maximize each stretch.

Will post a better review once I’ve had a chance to actually use them on the inside rail edge!

A quick cautionary tale for those considering ordering Hafele legs from The Builders Supply...

I paid on Saturday 1/4 and checked today 1/8 to see the order is still "processing" in their system.

I started researching The Builders Supply, found some sketchy reviews, got nervous, and decided to call them. I got my first red flag from their phone system, which says "thank you for calling the Builder Area" and not The Builders Supply... uhm, OK?

Weird, but let's press on.

I waited for "the next available assistant" and was then transferred to an overseas call center (or maybe some one in their basement?). Poor quality audio, very muffled, lady who barely spoke English, and the delays indicated an obvious VOIP connection. I inquired about my order, and while she was able to find it quickly, she said "it should ship by January 15th."

SHOULD ship by the 15th?

WTF?

I opted not to cancel the order, because one of the glaring 1-star reviews I found was from another buyer who experienced a long shipping delay, tried to cancel his order, only to have the order show up and his card charged, with no option to return the merchandise without a 75% restocking fee (which he already replaced with an order from another retailer). Another reviewer had his card charged with no merchandise in stock, and it took weeks for his order to be cancelled and his money to be refunded.

TL;DR... I will not be buying from the Builders Supply ever again, and I cannot recommend them to anyone else either. Gorilla Legs for me from here on out.

I ordered Hafele legs from link above last Thursday (2nd Jan). Paid with paypal. Got shipping confirmation on Monday and they arrived yesterday. I just checked the FedEx tracking and it was shipped from Kernersville NC on Friday although I only received the shipping confirmation on Monday.

Anyway, something seems off - perhaps they are out of stock after a bunch of PCFers ordered these legs?

I haven't opened the box but now want to get home and see if I got what I ordered!

From the reviews I am seeing, it sounds like they have no warehouse and no actual "stock."

Additionally, their business address is a Regus virtual office in Austin, Texas. Not sure how they actually source what they're selling, but it seems incredibly sketchy. I'm guessing they somehow "acquire" leftovers/unused/returned product from (very) large contractor orders.

Lastly, I always feel like those "trusted site"/"verified" badges people slap on their sites are actually more indicative of fraud than a reliable entity...

This is a dodgy business, and not one I would ever use again.

Maybe they're an aggregator - just a front for sales which are fulfilled by partner stores depending on location. Looks like I got lucky!

My first order from them was on 12/18, shipped on 12/19 & I had them on 12/23.
Opened and installed with no issues.
I planned to 100% use them again so @justsomedude keep us posted with your outcome.

Will do!

I actually saw a lot of their negative reviews before I ordered, but based on the positive experiences posted about them on here, I figured it was just a few flukey-pissed-off people going overboard.

Now I'm not so sure. One reviewer said it took 2 months for him to get his order. WTF? How the hell is that even possible?

OK. This Builders Supply website is whacko...

- Ordered 1/4
- Checked order stats 1/8 and says "processing"
- Call 1/8 to inquire
- Told ship date should be 1/15
- Just checked my account and it now shows "shipped"
- Tracking number is "pending," will follow up tomorrow
