Home Game Pet Peeves (3 Viewers)

I have all the same, usual gripes: players who need constant action reminders; players watching hockey on their phones, or running their lotto tickets through the app (Winner:Gagnon! --it's a Canadian thing, I think); pre dealing the flop, turn and river; long story tellers who cannot seem to deal and talk at the same time; etc

I also have one good friend who never lets a single home game go by without a rant about how pocket aces "suck". He laughs every time they get cracked. He is unwavering in his dislike of them and will often just fold them outright pre. I have tried logic and math to change his mind, but he is steadfast.

New pet peeve . . . dude host a game on pokerrr2 app and sets the shot clock to 30 seconds. I could play a game of chess between hands. They average 25 hands an hour. I have come to the conclusion the action is not worth being this bored playing poker. Avoiding that host's game.

I have two pet peeves.
1. Constantly forgetting blinds. Either they are up and walking around, going to the restroom, talking, or just absentmindedly sitting there, they need reminders every time for their blinds.
2. Not following action/acting out of turn. Either they are not aware that the action is on them or they act out of turn because of the last street's flow checking to them.

That is the problem - you are trying to use logic and math. Just let your bullets speak for themselves - when you get him with them a few times it should sink in.

This is the only way to do it. Just be careful not to dig your own grave slow playing them
Don't worry about slow playing them - play them normally. Just show them every time you rake in a pot with them (it's not like it is a big mystery most of the time when someone has bullets. The preflop four and five bet kinda gives it away). After a while it will sink in. If it doesn't then think about slow playing them to really get him on a pot. When it starts hitting people in their wallet, they learn.

People who "helicopter deal" or generally just deal in such a way that you think half the table have seen your cards. Keep 'em low, dammit!

People who deal the board out like this:

I consider myself pretty tolerant to most idiosyncrasies to be honest. I started hosting in August of 2019.

However, a couple things drive me up the wall. I run a self dealt game, and there is no dedicated dealer. That said, I've got a couple players who won't stop nagging about "big blind shuffle". That's the system I like, that's what I will always use. I still get players who whine and literally bitch about it. It's not complicated and I get agitated with players who keep complaining about it throughout the game.

The only other thing that makes me bonkers, is seeing some players abuse the chips. Rubbing them together and throwing them in pots rather disrespectfully. I've never said anything, but boy oh boy, a couple times, I've had to bite my tongue. I guess I feel like it's not their fault I throw out Paulsons to use. It's a tough one, and I don't want to start losing players as I'm trying to grow my game, but sooner or later, not sure I can remain quiet.

Otherwise, I consider myself pretty relaxed and easy going about all the other stuff.
J, what is this "big blind shuffle" of which you speak? I'm wondering if we do the same thing.

I have the big blind shuffling the previous deck while the current hand is being dealt -- the thinking is that they have the most time before they have to act. Then when they are done shuffling, they put the deck between themselves and the small blind, who is the next dealer after all. When the hand is over, the small blind gets the button, and can cut the deck themselves (they had nothing to do with shuffling) and can start dealing immediately.

It's always worked well for me, once I get players used to it. Is this how you do it too?

Exactly this^^^ with the exact same train of logic to go with it. Love it!

I've got a few grumblers who absolutely dislike it and favor the "dealer" shuffle. So, in other words, clean your own mess. But then when you finish shuffling, you gotta reach over a guys stack to get him the cards. I don't mind it, but when I host and get to choose, it's "big blind shuffle" for me

Negative. No reaching over required whatsoever.

The former dealer shuffles, places deck to his left. And end of current hand, that dealer takes the deck (sitting to his right), cuts, and hands it to the new dealer on his left -- who immediately begins dealing (with no obstructions in either blind position, either).

The biggest advantage to shuffle-behind is that nearly all of the cards are already where they need to be ti begin the new shuffle -- the former dealer is already in control of the deck stub, board cards, and muck pile. With far less movement of cards required to collect and begin shuffling, it's a much more efficient process. And none of it impedes the new dealer trying to immediately deliver cards or the blinds immediately posting.

So I am usually the host and I make a point of covering my bases (food, chips, table, chairs, tv, small change to payout, etc.) I definitely rule with an iron fist with some rules - my friends have realized that not many should argue the "my house/game, my rules" old adage (within reason of course).

Anyhow... we play .50c/$1 NLHE cash game and buy ins at the start of the night range from $40 to $100... usually a few rebuys/top ups during the night... at the end of the night, a few guys INSIST (I think they do this to get under my skin now) that we play "CHANGE GAME" to balance everyones stack out. I HATE THIS CRAPSHOOT DONKEY GAME. Let me explain. Basically, to qualify for this "change game" you need to have an uneven stack in front of you (if your final stack at the end of the game is divisible by $5 - you cannot play.

So lets say we have 8 guys playing at the time the game is called. Seat 1, 3, 4, all have stacks that are even and they can be paid out. The remaining players will put their "rogue" chips out (the least amount being .25c, and the most being $4.75). They will put their stacks aside, but for one hand will play an all-in pot for all the rogue chips left in the middle. Here is what each player is contributing:

Seats 2 has $1.25 left;
Seat 5 has $3.00 left;
Seat 6 has $0.25 left
Seat 7 has $4.50 left
Seat 8 has $0.75 left

Total pot value: $9.25
Here is my issue... all night you play to have fun and make a few dollars... here is a random bingo game with players not contributing even funds to this craptacular game. Seat 6 has the most to gain, contributing 25c to win $9.25 (37x his bet), while Seat 7 stands to win only 2x his bet) As the host, I have brought change to pay out people to the nearest dollar. I am willing to do that. And before anyone asks me - "is this because you are in Seat 7 and are contributing half the pot?" I have been in Seat 6 and Seat 7 before - I hate this game.

Part of me is urked by the fact that these same guys don't just say, ok HOST keeps the change whatever that may be ($10 wont go far to cover costs, but it would be a nice gesture).

To be quite honest, even when I would not involved - I do not want this bingo crapshoot played... I feel like it insults the game and even if someone ends the night on a high note winning the change game... I feel like it insults the game in a way.

Sorry for the rant all.

I have a guy that when he gets below 20 big blinds in a cash game, he'll shove and blind man's bluff the hand. I've made lots of money on him calling him when I have a decent to pretty good hand, but it kind of detracts from the game a bit. It's his money and he can do what he wants with it, but it kind of irks me a bit.

Oh I know this guy all too well. I have a few friends that do this and it undermines the game or I take it like an insult to the integrity of the game. It is his money, I agree, but to see another guy at the table who plays well, enjoys the game, etc. and then he loses to this blind man on a suck out... takes the air out of the game. I mean we all know that blind calling an all-in and catching the case card on the river in a hand that should have been folded - its gutting for me to see.

Dave (the Save)... why not suggest a proper chip race? These guys apparently like randomness at the end of the night, but that would at least be fair.

Do one to round everyone to the nearest dollar, then a second one to get those dollars into reds. They'll probably love it.

Just implement a house rule that states all 'loose change' at the end of the session goes to the house.
