What are some unexplored themes in custom sets? (1 Viewer)

As a 70's kid, every time I see them, I see poker chip potential with those colors!

I rarely if ever host. But have a small $10 constuction buddy game now and then.

The only thing stopping me from doing custom CPCs is having a theme I feel solid with. ITs not cheap and takes time.

A few ideas ive had in the past which get my creative juices flowing:

1) MC Escher:
Love his drawings, think this could have unlimited creative potential. birds/fishes, down/up staircase etc. Each chip a different design.

2) Curiosity Shop of Horrors:
thought of this one recently. Loved these types of horror movies as a kid. Each chip could be a different object.
LOL so far I've only come up with the $5 being the 'Monkeys Paw'

3) Sunken Place:
Joked with Bergs and others about losing at poker, getting stuck and going into the Sunken Place.
Thats as far as that creativity went. But I like the idea.

BTW, posting this here for posterity. IF anyone wants to use ideas, go for it.

Now I think of it the MC Escher staircase could be great with a 'Win rate' going down and a 'bank roll' going up , or is it down....

Maybe not an Escher themed set as a whole, or quite like you are thinking, but definitely a major design component to my first custom cash set.

(Rectifying those lizards from Escher's "Reptiles" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reptiles_(M._C._Escher) to appear like you were looking down on the sheet of paper was a labor of love over many hours. Of course, I found Escher had already done that in a different collection of works of his after these were in hand.)

I'm a little surprised nobody has mentioned Doctor Who as a theme. TARDIS, Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels, UNIT. The pool of villains and other iconic things from this series is extensive.

I don't know. Maybe it's been done, but a quick search didn't come up with anything obvious.

Every chip is going to be various shades of TARDIS blue. And every game involves me traveling back 8 minutes and getting my stack back if I lose it.

Dude next time I host you need to bring these. These were one of the 4 or 5 sets that inspired me to build my first ASM set - completely forgot these were yours!!! Love these!!!

The Sunken Place has so many great inlay options. Just bad things happening to good people.

5c - Person stepping in dog shit
25c - Person being pooped on by bird
$1 - Horses racing with sad face holding ticket
$5 - ATM machine with $0 balance showing
$25 - picture of QQ on AKK flop.
$100 - meteor steaking towards earth
$500 - MatB face with chip stacks
$1K - an actual depiction of actual hell
$5K - map of New Jersey

Inspired a bit by @Daniel Albarran 's set in this thread, you could absolutely select a bunch of fake businesses from The Simpson's to create a fantasy mixed set, with each denom being from a different place. They also have at least one episode in Vegas with a bunch of mock casinos, too; and of course there's the La Maison Derrière burlesque house too, which doesn't have any specific branding on the outside. :)

I especially love the idea of something like making quarter frac 'tokens' from the Noiseland Arcade or the Mini Golf Fun Center, or the theme park-specific currency like $1 Krustyland chips or something.

that set looks fantastic.
that beats my crude take on Ascending Descending. Needs some work.

Here you guys go. Just did this fairly quick last night, I would change some of the pictures to different denominations so they're easily seen. And make a lot of adjustments. But let's see how many people get this

Someone should really do a toilet themed set.......

Two movies I've always wanted to create a set around are The Sting and Glengarry Glen Ross.

Maybe theme a set around Gondorffs Parlour, using that classic Norman Rockwell style art.

For Glengarry Glen Ross I'd love a set where each chip represents one of the properties they were selling. Mountain View, Rio Rancho, Glengarry Highlands, etc.....could even bring Mitch & Murray into it.

They played cards in The Sting, that could work very nicely. Betting parlor too.

A set based on good gambling movies could work too. Sting, Cincinnati Kid, Rounders.

A set based on shitty poker movies and shows could be good too. Tilt, All In, …

I've been dorking around with ideas in my head the last few weeks. I don't know that I've seen a good Lord of the Rings set. Get the elven language from the Ring of Power around the outside. Then sigils, swords, characters or other words in the middle.

Another one I was debating were state flags. I live in the DC Metro area and grew up in PA. MD, PA, DC and VA all have interesting flags that might play well on a chip. You'd probably need to do ceramics for both of these ideas to really take full advantage of the artwork, though with the right graphic artist you might get a good result with clays.

Allow me to introduce you to this set from @Irish that is one of my favorite creations I've ever seen on PCF. :)
