I think it would be neat if there was a thread that discussed themes which would be great in a custom set, but haven't been done yet. It might give me, or anybody really, inspiration to design something and slap it on some China Cards Molds or Classic Poker Chips.

I'll start. I've frequently toyed with the idea of fruit on chips. Yellow = banana, Orange = orange, Brown = cacao, you get the idea. Additionally, there is almost no country on the planet that dominates more than 1 or 2 types of fruit production. If your blue chip has blueberries, the USA is the leading producer, so that could be part of the theme. India leads the world in lemon production (yellow). The red chip could have cherries, and Turkey by far produces the most of those. Cacao is Ivory Coast. Oranges are Brazil, Raspberries are Russia. One might even incorporate the name "casino" in different languages into the chip.

At any rate, I don't recall seeing a "variety of fruits" set of chips before.

What else is out there to explore?

Yes, this is my kind of thread. Since I have a new theme idea every single week. I'll try to think of some specific ones and write em down in a bit.

@chipinla
Let me get my list out.

I was exploring a Star Trek themed set, but then all my friends laughed at me.
I think every TV show or movie could have an amazing set if its done in an inspired way. It cant just say "Star Trek" on it. I'm not super familiar with Star Trek other than the general info like main characters and Enterprise.

The White Star Cruise Line has a whole slew of ships to name chips after. Kinda steps on the NAGB, but it’s real.

There's plenty of good Star Wars ideas out there
- Maz Kanata's Castle
- Coral Vanda (a giant submarine luxury cruise hello NAGB)
- Any Sabacc theme

A few other random ideas I've had
- Some sort of ancient unfound treasure theme (Ark of The Covenant, Alexander's Tomb, famous pirate treasures, etc.)
- Cannonball Club (would love to have an inlay of some cartoony person with a helmet stuck in a cannonball
- Something regarding the book The Alchemist
- "Elixir Casino" like a moroccan nightclub theme with potions
- A fictional villain organization like the ones from the bond movies
- An underground illegal game underneath a restaurant, like a deli or noodle shop.

I'm sure there's more in my notes somewhere lol

When I was designing my Indiana Jones set I was mocking up a custom box to look like the Ark of the Covenant. Super ambitious, clearly just ideas but could be awesome with proper engravings and hardware attached. Doubt it’ll ever happen at this point since I did that set on Cards mold ceramics.

Here are a few themes I haven't seen on any custom sets:

  • Dead Amphibians
  • Downton Abbey
  • Iron Chefs
  • Totalitarian Dictators of the 20th Century
  • Types of Capacitors
  • Mud
I'm sure a Mao/Stalin/Pol Pot/Gaddafi/Papadoc Duvalier set would go over great with the home game crowd.

Las Vegas Hilton had about 15 Star Trek chips. Those are the only ones I know of that even hinted at the Star Trek theme.

Between planets, factions, races, and star ships, there is plenty of material to choose from and get creative with colors and denominations.
