To denominate or not to denominate (1 Viewer)

club cleopatra hhr denominated and non denominated

I was playing dominoes with my inlaws. The pieces have colored pips. We mentioned the colors and my brother in law said "I thought they were all yellow and grey". We laughed about it cause he's a good sport. I forgot he's color blind. Always use denominations except for one of them, as your floater. That's easy to figure out. Something like 7-10% of men are color blind. There are different versions. Less than 1% of women are affected.

The overwhelming opinion here is to denominate, although I have two non denominated sets. I also have 4 denominated sets. It keeps players from asking how much each chip is worth, is the popular opinion.
Yep

......The only con to denominations is flexibility to change colors with changing stakes......
& the only real reason to "non" denominate. I guess if your plan is to have only 1 set of chips and use them for multiple stakes then go for it.

A much better solution is to put the denomination on there & buy another set or two

When me and my buddies started playing poker 20 years ago, we used plain dice chips. Everyone was constantly asking how much each chip was worth. Once I put some cheap labels on them, no more questions.

I think a non-denom frac would be the only chip that can get away with it.

Sure, non-denominated frac for flexibility. It can even play as $2 in bigger games without a noteworthy game security risk.

So my first set 20 years ago was the cheap dice poker chips. They had no denomination. The issue I had was that the players couldn’t remember what each chip was worth. I had to print out the values and post on the wall. I prefer my chips to have a denomination. If you’re order custom chips, perhaps one color of NVC. They can be used as bounty chips, rebuy chips, fracs for micro stakes, or large tournament denomination if you have a bigger than normal game.

This is a good point.

You should definitely consider distinguishing spots too, particularly on rolling edge. Denom helps you distinguish values of your own chips, but when you are trying to size the stack of someone across the table, denoms are not going to help as much as good edge spots.

If you are going to the trouble of getting customs you should denominate. To me, denominations just show that bit of care in your customization that you are trying to emulate high quality casino chips but with your home game design. Your customs should have your confidence that these chips are always good as cash whenever you have them in play. Additionally, denominations allow for smoother game play as no one should be asking "what are these worth?" (But sometimes, they do anyway, once and we all get a laugh.)

The only con to denominations is flexibility to change colors with changing stakes. But to me, that would serve to just add confusion anyway. Get customs, figure out the range of stakes you would play, and denominate accordingly. Plenty of breakdown advice on PCF as well.

Good luck.
This one hit perfectly! Reading this thread it comes to mind... are we not trying to imulate casino quality in our home game sets? If not go ahead and grab some of these and save yourself a couple $$

I mean they got 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon and absolutely Will serve their purpose. I personally grew up playing on these chips every single Friday and Saturday night for years and the chips lasted the test of time!

This forum... this hobby is about the finer things in life. They even make more than the red/white and Blues... you can get lots of colors and hell even write denoms on them with a sharpie... we have probably all seen it done, and honestly who on this forum hasn't played a home game that ran 100% successfully with dice chips?

No one is saying drop $20 plus k on a tourney set like this idiot did

Sure they are absolutely amazing and I love them more every single time I get them out... including this past weekend

Only one other chipper in the whole room that had any idea the value of the set we were playing... the rest were neighborhood dads that are just as happy playing Monte Carlo slugs.

But you ventured on to this site looking for the "next level" the "finer things in life" if you are willing to drop a few $k on a set of customs... the very slight "versatility of the ability to change values" absolutely does not out weigh the people asking all night long "how much is this?" Over and over and over that we have all witnessed using dice chips.

If you are willing to pay extra for quality chips... Definitely put denoms on them. Later you will be happy you did! Remember you want your game to resemble a night at the casino for your players.

$20k to me is ridiculous. But hey, if you got the money so be it. A 1000 chip Tina set for under $600. 1000 chip CPC set for $1500-$2000.

Yes! This is why my game features filthy chips covered with “boogers”; a cocktail waitress who only comes around every 90 minutes then gets your order wrong; floor rulings which make absolutely no sense; air vents directly over the table which make it either way too hot or cold; overpriced food options that give you the runs for days afterward; dealers who allow their biggest tippers to comment on multiway hands in progress; and at least one reg at every table who talks loudly about politics and/or his sports bets for five hours straight

I learned on these interlocking plastics myself. My uncle just had a random bucket with probably 500 of these mixed and matched since he was a kid.

Great memories, but now there is better and.that's what I want for my games.

Denoms on chips prevent (or at least reduce) the frequency that drunk players will repeatedly ask... "whattdz dis wun worthgh"?

If it makes you feel better, this probably happens at some home games, too. At least, no rake!

Yep, if it's about the money, then a $13 set of interlocking plastic chips (which are dimensionally consistent and stack great, btw) plus a 59c Sharpie to add denominations of your choice (sorry @Taghkanic) are the true way to chip happiness.

Good grief, if only I had seen the light 200,000 chips ago.....

If anything, we should be trying to make our games as *unlike* a casino experience as possible.

I started out playing exclusively in home and social hall games, because there were no casinos within 3 hours of me.

When I finally went to several casinos, I was struck by how schlocky their whole set-ups were.

There was nothing glamorous or impressive about them. Basically the same vibe as a low-grade county fair, only indoors. Cheap glitz, ugly and dirty carpets, gross overpriced food, floor managers who stopped giving a crap years before…

I’m sure there must be a nice and well-maintained casino somewhere, but if so it’s probably in Monaco. And I’m never getting there.

The only thing most casinos have over most home games is better chips. Except that they let their RHCs get disgustingly dirty, and worn down into bicycle tires.

Don’t be like casinos.

I have one set w no denominations but it’s cash and traditional colors. The red and green of that particular set is no issue for my color blind player.

Tourney I would without a doubt recommend denominations/values.

And if you only have 1 set I’d recommend denominations.

The denom itself can be pretty small too and still serve a purpose.
