Looking for opinions on the top $5 chips in the game. To me the IG and the Tiger NCV are my fav top $5 chips.

I own an IG set but looking for a 2nd cash set for 1/2 game in which the $5 chip is the workhorse chip. I can’t afford the Tigers so really looking for opinions of what set I should pursue based on the $5 chip.

Thanks!

Live Flamingo or Paris $1 & $5 are about the best looking and combined value. If you are able to harvest them yourself you have an average cost of $3/chip for the first 400 chips (200 $1’s and 200 $5’s). That is very difficult to match with any other Paulson THC chip combo.

WOW never came across this Flamingo. Love it!

It's an interesting question issue because $5s are often what drives sets, especially here on PCF - they're a workhorse chip for most home game stakes and we tend to use too many of them in our sets. This can create a shortage of good $5s. In terms of affordable $5s, I'll second what @BigJackJones said - those DiamondJacks originally sold for $1.59 mint and ended up getting blown out for a buck apiece. They're an amazing deal anywhere in that price range and a pretty cool looking chip.

As far as best of the best, I'd normally go with something like the Golden Eagles or the PCAs or any number of leaded THC's that are impossible to find, like Burro Inn. But what the hell, I'll stump for my own. There aren't many people who get to play with 43mm leaded Paulson $5s. So maybe Dunes Baccarat are the goat!

Kind of a loaded question as there are $2 per chip RHC $5s that are great... but also $30 a chip plus TRKs that are mind blowing...

As far as "work horse" it is inevitable that if you continue to use your RHC set of IGs they are going to wear down with time... I bought mine to play also and do...

But it is about rotation, the more sets being used means less "load" on a single set.... I know "thank you captain obvious" right?

So if you have already dove down the rabbit whole of Paulson chips with your IG set... it might be time to think about building a THC set that will stand up better to the regular "work horse" load that you are planning to put them through.

Something like that recent 98 CDI set that sold for under $5 a chip is a beautiful work horse set leaded and up for the task of heavy play without completely breaking the bank.

Asking what is you favorite $5 is going to get a lot of people listing chips that are simply unubtanium... Bourbon St $5s, Claim Stakes $5s, Nevada lodge Scrown TRKs, Mapes... lots of chips can be listed as favorite $5s but likely not going to help you reach the goal of a playable set.

I built this set during covid when prices were at their highest point for about $4k... yes with lots of help from friends and solid deals... but it can be done

The $5 has my home state flag colors and I absolutely love this set... or would you rather see $10k plus sets that never move... lol

Also maybe consider going the "custom CPC" route for a reasonably priced set of clay that will last you a life time in the $2.50 per chip range and you can make them whatever you want. You've been around almost a year now and seen I am guessing quite a few beautiful sets of customs.

Here are some examples of what other chippers have made, and many way better/cooler than what casinos have come up with

Lots of $5s out there, lots of directions you can go that are not RHC on the next set!

Best of Luck!

Appreciate the detailed post…great ideas. I use my IGs 1-2 times per month. I am obsessed with sharp edges though in which mine are so curious how long these typically hold up.

Ben, I am not sure if I have expressed this but I am always glad to see your thoughtful and insightful posts. I always enjoy reading your detailed opinions, it is one of my favourite parts of the forum since I started lurking a few years ago.
