Question from a new member so apologize if this has been discussed. Thinking of getting a CPC set for a home cash game. What are the opinions on including denominations? Pros/Cons?

Thanks in advance

I like non-denominated for limit sets for two reasons. Only two chips (and 90% one chip) so it's very easy to keep track of. The other is while a regular chipset can spread more than one stake easily, a limit chipset is usually constrained by your choice of workhorse.

e.g. You can have a 600 to 800 chip set that can play .25/.25 to 1/2 pretty easily, or an 8x range in BB. A 2-chip limit set is usually stuck between 2/4 and 4/8 of whatever the workhorse is, or only a 2x range in stakes.

For everything else though, I much prefer denominated. No reason non-denom can't work, but I prefer the appearance and it limits the questions.

I wouldn’t want a lack of replies to lead you to believe that undenominated is actually an option. People come here to get chips with numbers on them, after years of playing with blank dice chips. It’s the least you can do for your players.

My opinions...
  • Tournament: 5 to 6 colors per game. Absolutely denominate.
  • Limit: 2 (maybe 3) colors per game. I prefer non-denominated for reasons @springbox listed.
  • Cash NL: 3 to 4 colors - and fourth is more value storage than play. I prefer denominated, but don't mind non-denominated. (side rant: If a player cannot track 3 or 4 chip colors, they probably should not be playing a game where they have to track 4 suits, 52 unique cards, and all potential hand combos).

I don't care how often we played with the exact same non denominations chips, with the same players, and every game someone would ask what is this color worth?
Since changing to denominated chips, no one asks anymore, and it is less frustrating. Now if those same players would only pay attention to what is being bet and raised without having to ask everything, that would be awesome...YEAH!! you know who I'm talking about

I don't recall anyone ever complaining about, 'man I wish I hadn't denom'd that set'

If you're going to get customs, its not really feasible (rationally speaking) to mill and or replace the inlay.

Denominate but have a few nondenoms that can be flexible.

My frac is nondenom so it can be any frac. I also have another different rack of nondenom that would work as accompanying frac

lol quotes from a different thread ..

I have two custom ceramic sets, 1 with, 1 without (almost) my two fav chips are non denom'd

It depends on the crowd, if you're running an underground game or only playing with a bunch of players and stick to a Standard then you'll be fine. If most of your players don't regularly play then denoms

I've yet to hear someone say, 'Man I wish I wouldn't have a denomination on this chip!'

You can see my sets in the sig, also, welcome, check out that New Members page too!

Denominations are a must. The real question is whether to get dollar signs ………

Hey, you can stump for the underdog. No problem. But you can’t argue that well over 90% of the chips you see on PCF have numbers on them. And as a group, I think we’re actually kind of smart - probably on average triple digit IQs

OK, enough tongue in cheek, some real questions:

1) Is your player pool solid and consistent, or do you often invite new faces to the game?

2) Are you only ever going to use your one set, or are you going to rotate among different sets?

3) Are you using standard chip colors for your region?

4) Is the design of your label/inlay already very crowded, or do you have lots of free space?

If you are playing with the same guys all the time, are using one chipset with standard colors, and don’t have a lot of room to squeeze a denom into your design, there is an argument that the denom is unnecessary clutter.

get both, get denominated chips with one or two nondenominated chips
to make set more versatile

If you are going to the trouble of getting customs you should denominate. To me, denominations just show that bit of care in your customization that you are trying to emulate high quality casino chips but with your home game design. Your customs should have your confidence that these chips are always good as cash whenever you have them in play. Additionally, denominations allow for smoother game play as no one should be asking "what are these worth?" (But sometimes, they do anyway, once and we all get a laugh.)

The only con to denominations is flexibility to change colors with changing stakes. But to me, that would serve to just add confusion anyway. Get customs, figure out the range of stakes you would play, and denominate accordingly. Plenty of breakdown advice on PCF as well.

Good luck.
