Hey everyone — I’m new to the poker chip world and just starting to learn the basics. I’ve been putting together a small home cash game with friends (usually 6–8 players, $50 buy-ins) and I’m trying to figure out the best chip denominations, quantities, and overall setup before I make a purchase.
I’ve been reading through some threads here and already learned a lot, but I’d love any beginner tips you wish you knew when you first got started — especially around good value sets, materials (ceramic vs. clay composite), and how many chips I realistically need for a casual game.
Looking forward to learning more from you all. Thanks!

For denominations the poker group I play with has used 25/50/100/500/1k/5k for buy in games and then for cash games its lower to represent the change. so you might have 1/5/10/20/100. where a 100 chip is essentially worth a dollar.

blinds for our games vary as there are 2 separate nights for poker. the first night is just one game with blinds changing every 15 minutes starting at 25/25, 25/50, 50/100, 100/200, Break, 200/400, 500/1k. so essentially it doubles every 15 minutes. for the next night its two games. so we keep the same blinds at 10 minute intervals.

At $50 buy-ins, I imagine your blinds are $0.25/$0.25 or $0.25/$0.50. If that’s the case, you could do something like the following.

12/17/6 starting stack of $0.25/$1/$5. This is what I usually do with 100/200/2-400/80/20 set breakdown of $0.25/$1/$5/$20 or $25/$100.

Consider how much you want in your total bank and your budget for chips. Welcome and good luck!

You will find that there is no shortage of advice here, lol. Take your time and budget wisely. Don’t get swept away with chip envy, that will cost you.

Welcome!!! I wished I learned how to run away from this addiction 😂
kidding aside this community is great for anything chipping so good luck with your chipping journey!

Bro trust me and run… lol jk but I’m serious  :ROFLMAO:

Budget is key.

If you only want to spend a few hundred, most would say the best value are Tina hybrids. Look for the vendor broken arrow's group buys.

If budget isn't a concern, get a high end set.

Endgame is a custom CPC set. Take your time and do a better theme than "Cacho's Poker Room."

Different molds feel and sound different. Get samples. Enough to shuffle.

So you are playing tournament style and cash??

Assuming this is cash game. You might need to test the waters on how many times people rebuy and match the stack. Generally you should go for 100x the BB for buy ins. If you think people will add on for hundreds later on, you may want to decrease the blinds to balance that out.

With 6-8 players you should look to have at least 500 chips. At least 4 colors. Always have 1 color chip to represent the sb. With $50 buy in I assume you maybe playing .25/.50. With 4 colors perhaps .25 1.00 5.00 25.00 demons. Have everyone start off with 12 .25s (3dollars) 17 1.00s (17dollars) 6 5.00s (30dollars). A set up like that to me would make sense.

If you want good quality chips, I suggest you go at least ceramic. I am sure you know the different types of chips you can use. Fake clay (plastic), ceramic, Real clay. If you browse this site, i'm sure you will get your self some nice clay chips eventually. If you do I suggest setting up a budget you are willing to spend, and buy all the chips you need at once. Alternatively you can buy some chips by the rack and use a mixed set of clay chips and not pay a lot of front.

If you go real clay, the benefits are that they feel and look nice.
If you go ceramic, the benefits is that they look nice, cheap, consistent quality control, best durability no question. Negatives, they tend to be slippery, edges are rounder.
If you go plastic, benefits is that they are the cheapest option. That's no fun though!

Hope all this helps.
