I’m hosting a cash game on Friday that’s .25/.50, I’m not sure if I should get chips for that value or just substitute different values for them

Are you saying both .25 and .50, in which case no, or just if you should get a fractional denom, in which case if you have that option it would be good to get .25 chips which is more flexible. Or you can use non-denominated chips to represent the quarters.

I was thinking about the low denoms as well --- I'm leaning towards picking up $1 $5 and $20s. For micro stakes, the plan is to use the chips and 'divide by ten' so getting to 0.10, 0.50, and 2.00 effective for the session. Then the chips will still be relevant ten years from now, when inflation will have made $1 chips the new nickels...

Choose the better fitting option for your needs between the suggestions in posts 4 and 5.

I do that when I play sometimes so I’ll probably do that

Buy NCVs. Then you can 0laybthem
If you’re unsure of which one, maybe go with a NCV so you can use it for whatever works best on a given night. Never both.
I think NCV fracs is the most flexible solution, even if you're never going to play 2¢/5¢ or 5¢/10¢.

NCV is a really flexible option. Use that as 25¢ chips or if you have fracs, just use 25¢ but be sure you have enough.
I've played at games where starting stack only had 10 quarters, $1s and $5. There was constant change making during the game, a real aggravation: until I schooled them. 16 quarters solved the problem. I play regularly at a game that uses 8 - 25¢ and 8 - 50¢ chips in starting stacks and it runs smoothly. So ordering chips is either 80 of each, or 160 quarters for a 10 player game. If that's the case, then you get more bank out of the 25¢ and 50¢ chips. I am of the opinion one rack of 25¢ chips alone is just not enough to avoid all the change making.
Good Luck with the game.

No no no!
And no NCV fracs either. Get qiarters. If you want to bet 50 cents you can use two! The NCV frac is a weird compromise to me. Youve decided to buy chips with numbers on them - whether they’re 15 cent plastics or five dollar clays, you’ve accepted the expense. So why go 80% of the way, and then get cheap with a chip you’ll be using all the time?

Starbursts, NCVs, T25s, and roulette chips are all viable options if you can’t / don’t want to spend big money on “real” fracs.

All are better than using $25 chips as quarters, IMO.

Oh if we’re talking about Paulsons, hells yes. Paulson fracs are stupid expensive. I’m all cool with ncv alternatives there. I like starbursts.

Are fracs so expensive as most casinos don't use them anymore so they are impossible to harvest?

Fracs are the only part missing of my set now. I just use ncv.

Exactly. And the casinos that do use them only use them for weirdo games I don’t understand, like baccarat, and they don’t keep very many on hand. So even if the chip room buys out a casino like that, there aren’t nearly enough to go around.
And, not only is the proportion of fracs that exist lower than other poker denoms, but the demand for them is higher.
Low supply plus high demand.

When you say Starbursts, do you mean the literal candy or something else? I’m new so I don’t know the lingo.

They paulson chips which have a hot stamped ‘starburst’ logo. Looks a bit like a giroscope or an atom pattern of sorts.
