PCF POKER Glossary | Help needed! (1 Viewer)

@Bill_Man618 - You rock!!

I think we have some changes coming and these will be added soonTM*. This is more of a PCF Glossary Add

Pumpkin = $1k chip
Flag = $5k chip with a white base color and red and blue edgespots
Cranberry = $25k chips at Bellagio and Aria (idk about other casinos)

Don’t know if this translates well but we say:

”Upp på rygg” = ”on your back”, meaning you’ve been called, show your cards.

”Rufsa” = ”tousle/rough up” [the cards], meaning shuffle the cards
@Eriks - This might be my favorite thing to come out of all of this; I am so excited to learn about this, please find us more and encourage others to do so as well!

Cool! I’ll try to think of more. Most of the expressions we use are directly translated from the English ones though

@FordPickup92 / @CrazyEddie / @Bill_Man618 / @Hot Nuts / @ekricket / @Anthony Martino

These are all great adds, I can't wait to get these in. I'm going to try to categorize the types of entries and have a way to define what they are, so we can build an easy way to add to it, as well as search and define them.

Its been all of 2 hours since I've been parsing this, here is kinda what I'm thinking, but I will also need to work with Tommy on what is possible to build out for the website.

I absolutely love the Non English terms and want to build a special section at the top for it, here are some of the types from the responses I've seen

#NonEnglish (Rufsa)
#OldSchool (UTG, Nit)
#NewAge (Orbit, SPR, EV)
#HandNick (Gay Waiter, Dinner for 2)
#Slang (High Society)

Also I plan to keep a thread a live and as people post we can keep adding to the Poker Term Glossary over time.

Thought of a couple more:

[att=to] ”gula” (gul=yellow, adding the ”a” at the end makes the noun a verb). Means losing all of your money, or at least all money allocated to poker. No idea why we say that, but it shouldn’t have English origin since being yellow means being a coward (right?) and has nothing to do with being cleaned out.

”Tomte” = santa (or probably more like one of santa’s helpers and not santa claus himself). Means the same as ”fish” at the table. Again, no idea why we use that.

In the English language, at least American Slang, yes 'being yella or yellow', does mean cowardly, used in context. You can see this in old American westerns, but by today's standards 'yellow' isn't really used in this manner, and I think there is an inference of racisms towards the Asian population if use in a particular way. So while you'll see reference to White or Black people, no one really uses Yellow people, it would be considered rude at best, and it relates back to the yella being related to cowardly.

Not to derail the thread, and I think this is on topic, the term 'queer' has / had two meanings - 1) odd, or against the grain 2) meaning gay.

1) This is the usage in poker, where you have two pair, but the board pairs and 'queers' or disqualifies your hand in some way - example:

V: Q3 H: AA

B: Q 3 4 10 4

The Villain flopped 2 pair but got queered.

The second usage use to be derogatory and can still be used that way via inflection or implied, but is used just as much or more used today to define a specific type of gay, as I understand it.

Disclaimer, none of this is meant to be political or rude or offend anyone, just discussion and educational purposes.

Busto: Broke

Robusto: the exact opposite of busto. "After binking the $40 buyin $2 million gtd tournament he went from Busto to Robusto"

Most places that’s called getting counterfeited.

I don’t know if the term ”gula” has any racial connotations in Swedish. I know yellow is a derogatory term for Asian, I just don’t see what the racial stereotype would be in this example. Will see what I can find on the origin of the use of that word.

Scared Money

I found someone claiming it’s an old slang originating in certain parts of Stockholm. Södermalm to be exact, you’ve been there @ekricket :D

And then introduced to poker via a Stockholm based underground poker club in the 70-80s

Sorry to nitpick, but pumpkins are called pumpkins because they’re orange, not because they’re worth $1,000. And there are some casinos with $1,000 chips that aren’t orange. And I’d be willing to bet that nobody uses “pumpkins” to refer to those non-orange $1,000 chips.

So I would change the definition of pumpkins to something like - “high value orange chips (usually $1ks.)”

I only mention it because I used to play in a cardroom where the T10ks were orange and some of us called then pumpkins.
