Paulson: Full label replacement tutorial thread (5 Viewers)

I’ve been finding the AS chips fairly easy, compared to some others when I use the nail polish trick.
My problem is when a big chunk of the vinyl comes off with the plastic top layer. It becomes more difficult to peel, once the nail polish remover has been applied.

I think I might have to make smaller cuts to remove the plastic top layer.

Are you using a scraper of some sort to remove the vinyl? I use a pin but I have seen some using fancy dental tools. Much easier, dont try to peel the vinyl up with your fingers.

The less cuts in the plastic mean less chance to damage the chip as well.

Grant

I use a Stanley blade to cut the top layer, then pliers to pull it off.

I apply the polish remover, use the blade to peel part of the label up, and then pliers to peel right off.

I think my problem is the chips that I’ve cut too much into prior to removing the top layer.

I’m gojng to try making smaller cuts to remove it tonight.

Are you doing the Pac Man cut to take off the plastic?

Ok thanks for the feedback @grantc54 and @allforcharity
My latest efforts are going like this and taking about 40 seconds per side.
This is the easiest method by far.
Cut a tiny pie shaped piece. Dig under and peel the plastic top layer in one go.

A quick drip of nail polish remover and within seconds the vinyl sticker lifts slightly from the chip. Put the blade under to pop it out and peel. So far the stickers have been coming off in one piece.

Leaving a nice clean recess.

Good info here... are you putting the drop of nail polish remover straight onto the paper inlay and letting it absorb for a few moments before peeling it off?

Or are you scraping it off a little to get the drip underneath the paper?

I actually use one of these and dab the paper inlay liberally.
I couldn’t think of anything else to use and I saw some in the shops next to the nail polish remover. I think they are some kind of eyebrow makeup applier lol

And yes I find you need to do them one at a time, let it absorb for a few seconds and then peel. If it dries it won’t work.

I just managed to completely remove the inlays from 20 chips in about 40 minutes.

That's a really tiny pie slice. I cut the pie all the way to the center of the chip, like I was cutting a real serving of pie.

That is too much cutting in my opinion. That may work for chips where you can pull up all of the paper label underneath but with the AS chips I find the paper is either going to all come up or it's not (and you will need to use the NPR). No additional cutting will help.

PS. I intentionally said paper as it seems to be @Gear's trigger word and I love to stir the pot.

Sorry, I was meaning the initial cut to get out the plastic laminate layer, not the inlay underneath.

Sorry @Gear I’ve also got no idea whether it’s paper or vinyl or papyrus for that matter.

How about I refer to it as the “sticky part” from now on lol

I vote papyrus :) OK not really. "Sticky part" sounds good though.

My point is that when the sticky part IS paper, you will know for sure. It's very obviously full of fibers and such.

Ok so I’ve done a few more recently and I noticed something that was interesting, and I wondered if anyone else noticed the same thing or had any thoughts.
@kmccormick100 @Gear @Burke @grantc54 @BSteck @allforcharity @5aces

I removed the top layer from about 30 chips a few days before I actually used the nail polish remover to take off the vinyl sticker part. A large number of them were much more difficult to do than when I remove the sticker part straight after removing the top layer. I even had to reapply the nail polish remover a couple of times on a number of them before it worked. Several I ended up scraping still.

Has anyone else experienced this? I think I’m going to start removing the sticker part right after removing the top layer.

Interesting, which chips? I have never noticed this and have done plastic removeal both right before and days before. Biggest difference for me is between chips (Aurora vs Paradice).

What is the temperature in the location you are storing them? Maybe that factors in.

The temperature here has been very warm, 40 degrees some days outside, but they’ve been in my theatre room so shouldn’t be warm enough inside to affect them.

These are AS hundos. Everyone I’ve applied nail polish remover to straight away has lifted within seconds. I wonder if the exposure to oxygen after the top layer is removed affects it?

I’ve got some more to try tonight that have sat without the top layer for a few days. I’ll do some more of each and see if there is a difference.

I had the same issues with some chips from one casino. Chips were old, but i had 20 in new and 20 in used condition. I can’t remember the casino at the moment. 6AE53016-7329-4EA2-B31C-AA7BC0CFB61F.jpeg

Other chips, like Aurora, in new condition as well were easy to relabel.
Excellent Tropicanas were not easy and not really difficult to relabel.

So, I wasn’t able to make a definition of which are easy or hard to replace, that’s why I didn’t mentioned it.

Sometimes I didn’t use enough nail polish, which was also sometimes a reason why I had problems to remove the original label.

I’ve done two types of chips and had two different experiences.

The newer Aurora Star snappers had a tougher outer plastic layer to remove but the underneath sticker came off easily with a couple drops of NPR.

I also did some older THC Horseshoe fantasy chips and their outer plastic layer came off easier. But the sticker-papyrus was a bugger. NPR didn’t really work, rubbing alcohol didn’t really work, it ended up requiring lots and lots of scraping to get all the residue removed.

But I’ve never let chips sit after removing the outer plastic layer so I can’t give you any input on that question.

I have quite a few different chips that are scheduled to go under the knife so I’ll be sure to report back on my experiences with them.

I haven't come across this, either. The easy/tough removals were pretty much distributed at random. I usually did 20 at a time - remove all the plastic, add the non-acetone NPR, then remove inlay. I haven't done any paper ones and hopefully will never have to.

Did my first session of removal and went well.

  1. remove plastic with xacto knife
  2. drop 5-6 drops of non-acetone bail polish (i find if i spread it evenly on the sticker it comes up like butter after i drop)
  3. drop in soap water while i do the next, then rotate over to clean water n keep the cycle going.

im starting with 1 barrel of $1's and the new $20's n see how i like it compared. we shall see
Fair enough. I’m interested to see how you feel at the end of the barrel.

Fwiw I think your set is fully deserving of being an inlay replacement set. Sometimes I think it’s not worth it, but yours are awesome.
