I've been taking regular trips to Vegas over the years, and even though a lot of the mystique of discovering Vegas is gone, I still enjoy every aspect of it. However, with so many poker hubs out there now, I'm looking for other options that might be fun to discover.

Options:
Vegas
Florida
Texas
Cali - probably not because of what I've heard about the high rake in low-stakes games
Northeast (Boston/NH/Conn/AC) - Less likely because I don't like the cold and will probably be travelling in Feb.
Any I'm missing????

I only play cash games, and will likely be only at the lowest stakes NLHE (1/2 or 1/3), so rake structure is important (Cali prob bad here), but that's about all that will matter a lot.

The other major factor for me will be walkability and access to other sights/activities besides poker. I love being able to take walks around Vegas during downtime or on the way to a good restaurant. If I stay for 4-5 days I'm going to need a much better restaurant selection than a typical casino food court/sports bar setup, so walking distance/short drive to decent restaurants is pretty important. Same for other non-poker activities. Vegas has a million things to do on/around the strip or downtown, but are there any good rooms in FL or TX that won't require a long car ride to get to something fun?

I don't play marathon sessions so when I make these trips I might play a few hours before lunch, take like 4-6 hours off for something fun + lunch/dinner stops, and back to poker in the evening/night. I'm pretty flexible on what that "something fun" can be, especially if it's in a new city I've never been. Could be a museum, shopping, beach or pool time, just sightseeing, etc.

I guess my thrill for going to Vegas has waned over the years and I'm hoping there's somewhere that might be a nice change of pace this year.

Lastly, maybe if you're local to one of these spots you'd be up for a meetup?

Why not Louisiana?

plenty of places to choose from there. Great southern hospitality. affordable. and the best food in the County/World.

Food and atmosphere gets better the more south you go IMO.

I forgot about that one! How's the non-poker scene near the casinos?
In Baltimore, near the Horseshoe, it’s not bad (just be careful which way you go). National Harbor is growing by leaps and bounds. Live has a great room, but there isn’t much within walking distance. If you drive up, there’s a lot to do close to all of them.

This is a great idea! I've never been there. Any cities/rooms you'd recommend the most?

This could work. Maryland is easy driving distance for me so I could explore a lot more easily. Thanks!

For southeast US sounds like you wanna go to Harrah’s New Orleans. Maybe biloxi…haven’t been. Harrahs is great though and in a great area for touristing.

I haven’t been to a Texas Oklahoma, or Florida room with anything interesting for miles. It’s poker or uh drive at least a few miles to anything else.

This is what I’m worried about. I hate spending a lot of time in cars.
Hard Rock Seminole Florida has to be top of the list
This one is probably highest on my list. And I’m very likely to get there soon. I’m in sales and I’m bugging my customer in Miami that we’re overdue for a visit so this one will be a “work trip” lol.

Didn’t expect Baltimore and The Deep South being the recommendations.

I don’t poker so I don’t know anything, but was def surprised to see those as the primary 2.
I’m probably tied between Baltimore and New Orleans for the next vacation trip…. Friends in Baltimore makes that great no matter what, and if it’s New Orleans my wife will join and that will be great no matter what also.

I love how much poker has provided these opportunities.

Another vote for Harrah’s New Orleans. Be aware that Mardi Gras is Feb 13 next year. Expect big crowds for two weeks leading up to it.

Ran into some guys in Vegas that recommended Beau Rivage / Hard Rock in Biloxi. Couple hours away from New Orleans so possibly do a little of each.

I’m not a big fan of the LA poker but probably because I’m a tourney or low limit player.

I live in NorCal and love Thunder Valley but not a lot within walking distance!

@inapinch could recommend some good places in Southern Mississippi. I’d suggest Colorado, but I don’t think we are the right place for you. Cold weather, isolated casinos, and not very many non-gambling options when you’re up there.
