My Journey As A Professional Poker Player (33 Viewers)

but post-Covid the level of service in every aspect of our lives seems to have dropped considerably. Lots of businesses are understaffed, struggling to fill positions, nobody wants to work, so they're just filling spots with warm bodies.

This is not going to be something that goes away for quite some time I feel. The pay needs to be increased by several degrees, offer benefits, and so on. The labour pool (yes, labour, eat it you Yankers) has had quite enough of being exploited to the point where NOT working is more lucrative thanks to federal Covid relief.

Are businesses willing to suffer for an undetermined amount of time (weeks, months, quarters, or even over a year) hoping to go back to the way things were pre-Covid in regards to wages? The organizations that pivot to the new paradigm of paying their employees worth a damn are going to make off like gangbusters in the next few years. As for those who refuse / can't because of their business model, they'll be the ones still struggling to attract any job seekers whatsoever.

I can only hope you are right. However, I know at least one restaurateur who is struggling to maintain a staff. He refuses to pay his employees more, because when the COVID relief runs out they will be begging to work for $8.50 an hour once again. It's easier to suffer now, than to try and cut salaries later.

Never underestimate the power of greed. :(

I actually know a number of business owners who bumped up their pay significantly in an attempt to attract staffing and still struggle to fill positions.

Going to be interesting when all the "free" government money runs out and the bill comes due. But what incentive is there to work when you can sit at home and make equal or more than you'd make working 40+ hours per week?

Greed is blinding. The problem with this owner are twofold:

1. Unless he's hired the most oblivious staff in the world, those former workers aren't just sitting at home. They'll be actively job searching for anything better. Better pay, shorter commute with the same pay, anything that is tangible that improves their overall situation. Those who may return to the same wage, with the same place of employment, after the relief program has ended aren't exactly the gold standard of the workforce. Which ties into my next point.

2. Inferior service that you are providing both now and in the future with your lack of / lackluster staff are going to sink your business' reputation. If your greed is so great that you feel that your potential market share has inexhaustible tolerance to bad business policies, well:

Covid has unearthed a lot of hard truths about the economy. It's propped up by a majority of severely underpaid people who contribute nearly all the value to the country. A CEO in a boardroom is worth dozens to hundreds of an average worker? Not even close. The problems are many and require incredibly unpopular changes (for the 1% that is) to start swinging the power back to the people.

Both the Canadian and American governments now have experience in paying a lot of citizens through Covid relief packages. It could be the first stepping stone to a freedom dividend / universal basic income implementation. With that in place, workers everywhere are able to have a great bargaining chip with their respective management. Workers can leave in droves from undesirable conditions, substandard treatment, nepotism, insufficient pay, and so on with the assurance of a basic income policy. Business owners and managers may have a goddamn embolism / aneurysm when they realize that the serfs are turning into actual people. And those people aren't wanting to work for an absolute pittance, especially when compared to the rising costs of everything.

Rant over.

Careful, lest your sweet thread end up in the horror that is the politics section.

1. Calling ahead is fairly new though right? It used to be that you had to show up in person to get on the list.
2. My local casino has insane lists but I'm glad I am a fairly unknown semi-regular because they are so clueless with the lists that whenever they call a new table I just go seat myself regardless of where I am on the list.
3. I don't understand why the lists aren't digital by now. As in Bravo poker should let you put yourself in the list. Phoning in to get manually put on a list in the 21st century is stupid. Some high school kid could probably reprogram their app in about 30 min to do this. I've seen a few rooms where at least there is a kiosk where you swipe your card and then select which games you want to play but you still have to do that in person.

The way bravo was implemented at my local club, it was connected to their rewards kiosks and you could put yourselves on lists on-site using the rewards card. They only take call-ins for high limit games (20/40+), otherwise I think it's probably too many names and no-shows.

Calling ahead isn't that new, within the past year or so, not like they just started doing it

Poker Atlas allows you to signup, but they use Bravo

Poker players absolutely hate people like you, for good reason. You’re the guy that sits there when I got called for the game and the floor is running down the list and can’t figure out why I don’t have a seat after 45 minutes.

I don't go to casinos looking to make friends on Facebook.
Nah, you go to casinos looking to piss people off and when you get in a fight with a drunken degenerative idiot, and when you get put on your ass it’s gonna be hilarious.

And then you’d have to swipe your card when you sit - boom, no more line jumpers!

Hard to tell from your posts, but sometimes I think you are enjoying not working for the "man" a little bit too much.

It's nice to have the freedom I do

But don't get it twisted, the past couple of months at the tables I've felt like I'm just spinning my wheels. No matter how bad I get the droolers to put it in (12%, 7%, 4% equity) they continue to escape the traps and deny me the easy riches I am quite frankly due AND deserving! :p

How are the hold-em tables? Profitable? If so, would you benefit by not relying on Omaha for your sole source of income? I know money matters little to some of the Omaha players in casinos that serve a large population base.

I have zero interest in playing hold em cash games for a living

I feel like PLO is way more profitable, just sucks to hit those downswing spots where the droolers are desperately trying to spew stacks to you but somehow fumble on the river and take your chips instead
