Hey guys,

I started a second project lately and am now looking for md-44 hub mold chips. Colours that are already taken are yellow, grey/greyish blue and black.

So what i am looking for is ideally white off-white, red, green, purple, brown or pink chips... Or other colors i forgot that are not too much in conflict with what i already have. Solids or edgespots are both fine, same goes for inlays vs hotstamps.

If you have any unused Hub molds lying around, i'd be very happy if you reach out to me :)

Best regards

Bump with Hub Mold-pr0n

Wow, that is an impressive lot!

I do only have the started El Rancho set so far, that i want to add 1s and fracs to. Well, I do have a few singles in transit in the US, but nothing besides my started set in a quantity of 5 or above. When they arrive in Germany next month, i hope to get a feel for the difference in weight and feel for the two distinctive mold versions.

Yeah, i read about that. The El Ranchos are around 10.4 to 11 gram each. Quite a lot of the hub molds seem to be in the 6-7 gram range from what i saw.

I am really unsure of whether I can live with such a huge difference in weight and whether i'd mind other molds mixed in more than having a weight difference that large.

Also i can't really spot the difference in the molds from the pictures so far. I mean i see a difference in good scans/pictures but i am not there yet to see them in random pictures. I hope that changes once i can take a closer look at both

Bump

On a sidenote: after staring at numerous examples on the chipguide, i feel i can now tell the two variants of the hub mold apart visually... Still depends a bit on the pictures though :ninja:

Here is what i mean, black encircled looks like rectangles to me, white encircled ones look like trapezoid, but these are from the same set

Hi. You've got a keen eye. I'm not sure I would have noticed the difference, but you're right.

Are you familiar with the website below, which I think is the original source of the "MD-44" name/number for this mold:
http://www.antiquegamblingchips.com/molddesignindex_site.htm -- scroll down and click on 5. Geometric Images.

I found this description:
"MD-44 -- HUB -- 25 vertical rectangles. 1928-1956. Mason & Co., Newark NJ and other locations. In their heyday they were perhaps the largest chip distributor in the country. (I know that they were selling hub mold poker chips through the early 1990's, at least, from their Chicago headquarters. I had written them. Their catalog/price list was very primitive then. They are out of business now.). There are at lease two distinctive versions of this mold, as Jim Follis reminded me. This is not surprising since the mold has been made over such a long period of time. Click here to see a picture of each variety. The two chips are the same size, but;
  • orange chip -- rectangle hubs (90 degree corners) -- the two incised circles are 24 mm and 33 mm.
  • yellow chip -- trapezoid hubs -- the two circles are 26 mm and 35 mm............The sample on the left is for sale. We know it was shipped to a particular address in Geneva NY in 1936, but it is not attributed to a particular club, I believe."

Maybe the diameter will help me in edge cases, didn't think of that before. Thanks!

But from browsing the chipguide i am nearly sure that the weight is not really dependent on the mold, except for the heavy version only being available after the trapezoid mold was made. But i think i did still spot a lot of B-9 weight chips on the new mold as well.

It is really awesome that so many of the old Mason & Co records are available there.

I was today years old when I learnt, that B-9 weight is really not the way to expand my set. I had a whole lot of different molds and samples in my mail today and finally could see and feel both variants at the same time.

While my scale isn't the best one for the job, the results are pretty clear...

Same goes for vintage unspotted DiaSq by the way. The ones i got in my sample batch today really felt kind of plasticky and their weight was very noticeable too low.

Anyway, bump for some nice heavy Hub molds.

Also looking for affordable spotted barrels of hub molds. By affordable i am not thinking of any rare old casino/illegals like Eagles Club or Stateline, but maybe American Legion or BPOE Elks :)
