How do I get invited Back? (1 Viewer)

Well it's been 3 months now since my last post. I have had great fun playing poker with the other guys hve a regular seat to play at.

Everyone's advice was right on the money and I just wanted to follow up and say thanks for making this a great forum and I appreciate how welcoming all the members are.

The Royal Yaks have been a huge hit and still get compliments on what a nice chips they are. Good chips really do make a difference in the overall enjoyment of the game of poker.

A small set of nice chips is more fun than a big set of dice chips.

Thanks again.

GLad things are working out...

To add some points for those who may read this down the road...

-Don't drink too much... This has been the common denominator with all bad eggs to my game. It has caused good friends to get uninvited, it has fostered friction with other players, I've had broken chairs, and most annoyingly those that are sloshed play horrible. Not always -EV horrible (but often yes), but horrible in a way that slows the entire game down because they're not paying attention or using good etiquette.

The number one culprit always seems to be straight liquor. I have a number of friends who bring their own "special" bottles of bourbon, scotch, whiskey, etc... And then drink it straight... Then they drink some more, and some more, and wham, they're sloshed, and turn into annoying guys who bet stupid, break chairs, spill food, slow the game down, etc...

I've had people get sloshed their first time or two at my game, they've slowed down play, and acted a fool... They did not get invited back,

I don't play poker for a living, I play because I enjoy the game. So for those that say, keep the drunks... They're profitable. Well, to me, enjoyment of my time is more important than extra profit.

I'm sure there are those that feel getting their "drink" on is all part of the game, and I do enjoy a few drinks while playing, but you gotta be able to hold your liquor if you're gonna drink. Getting sloshed may be fun for you, but it's at the expense of everyone else's enjoyment. I suppose my tolerance is low due to dealing with stupid drunks at work all the time. End rant. :)

^^ Two nuggets of wisdom.

I have a pretty low tolerance of stupidity and obnoxiousness in general, and both are usually exaggerated by the over-consumption of alcohol. I don't think your issue is work-related. :)

I agree with the alcohol thing as well. I don't drink much, nothing against it I just go different routes for my social relaxation most of time, so when I'm the "sober" person at the same table with someone who is beyond the point of buzzed it's not fun. It's not fun in the casino and it's especially not fun at a home game, doubly so if it's my house. Again, I have no problem with the drink, I imbibe to excess every once in a while myself, but I host a poker game for the purpose of playing poker not just an excuse to drink and get drunk. I had to tell one of my buddies this summer that putting down a half bottle of Jack before we've even played two hours of poker is detrimental to the game flow. Not exactly in those words, but close. ;) Maybe I'm getting old, but I feel that at this point in my life (mid 30's) it's time to slow down a little on the "get hammered on every available non-work night" way of living... Yep, I'm old. lol

Sobriety is just a faint glimmer in my rear-view mirror, but remaining respectable while is someone else's home is even more important than the next drink. Now, if someone wants to get totally sh*t-faced in a casino, I'm all for fleecing the fool, and letting him believe they are having the time of their life. It's a win for me, a win for the casino pulling a rake, a win for the heavily tipped dealer that doesn't boot him and a win for the drunk that will wake up the next morning believing they had the night of their life. I may even offer to take them to a tattoo parlor so they think they just lived "The Hangover".

It's the elusive win-win-win-win scenario.

Did anyone mention that letting the host win might have been a good move ;)

I joined a Craigslist home tournament once...single table small buyin. The host didnt mention that it's winner take all until we start. I get down to heads up with host where I have 90% of chips. I offer to chop and give host 1/4 pot. He takes it but I am never invited back again.
