Earthquakes and Volcano in Iceland (3 Viewers)

Im in Iceland this weekend... not the best timing I suppose. Following!

So non stop earthquakes still and the two GPS chips in the area have moved 120cm away from each other I don’t know the English word for it but the magma is pushing the land apart underneath.

The town is empty and without power. The estimate the magma hallway underground is now 12KM long. This is nuts

Some photos from Grindavik and the golf course there

"This will probably be a big volcanic eruption: the dike intrusion near Grindavik that began yesterday caused ground shifts of 120 cm (yes, centimeters). Within three hours. In the last Fagradalsfjall eruption it was 10 cm in one week"

Fissure eruption?…or fissure vent.

Less than 800meter from the surface. Increased odds of it might erupt underwater and that would ground airtraffic

These are weird and scary times…

So some bullets

  • The area is still on Danger alert
  • Land is still rising
  • Most animals have been rescued as people got permission to go home for 5 minutes to grab pets and stuff yesterday and today so we are slowly taking the value out of the town. This is a highly controversial topic as it has been noted that it can erupt any moment and having people on the area could be really really bad
  • If the volcano comes up on land, it will have little or no effect on flights
  • If it erupts under water than flights are in bad shape due to ash
  • The town of Grindavík is sinking 1meter and has major cracks, the damage is severe and will probably never be the same

Hope @Gunnar is fine and the steam on the photo is not coming from his ears.

Still no eruption and just small quakes. But the pressure has started building again and land is rising while Grindavik is sinking. That is causing major damage in Grindavik. Sadly I think that the town is finished regardless is the eruption will happen under it or not.

Google maps shows you are only about 40 kms away. Are the quakes causing damage in your town? Stay safe!
The damage has so far only been to some houses in Grindavík, some quakes cause minor damage but the earth lowering and rising on opposite sides of the town are causing lot more damage than the earthquakes.

Icelandic regulations for building houses take earthquakes into the account so most houses here are built very sturdy. So even though we feel some of them the damage is minimal to none outside of Grindavík.

But to take a small deepdive, there are some areas closer to the capital that pressure builds up and triggered earthquakes happen there. One of those areas can produce quakes bigger or around scale 6-6.5 if we get one of those then that could do some damage but nothing major. That is one of the scenarios we don´t like to see but it bound to happen eventually.

The are that the magma is flowing underground is now active and will stay that way for tens of years based of the history. For that reason it is unlikely that the Town Grindavík will recover fully as the danger there is not going away, even if it does not erupt there the possibility is still there. As a result there have been a lot of work going into Grindavík to recover valuebles and animals as we simply don´t know if it will be a safe area any time soon. The best case scenario now is for the damn magma to find a way to the surface so the tremors and platonic movement slows down :)

Blue lagoon is still closed.

From the news.

  • It is still considered likely that an eruption will start from the magma intrusion in the coming days.
  • Minor seismicity increased slightly at the intrusion under Grindavik before midnight, but has returned to a similar level as before.
  • No eruptions have been detected on seismometers.
  • Around 460 earthquakes have been recorded since midnight, the largest measuring 2.7.
  • A Civil Defence briefing has been called for 11am today.
  • A briefing on Saturday revealed that a design exists for a wall to protect Grindavík from any lava flow, that 600 housing requests have been received by Government, and that repairs to the town will take a long time.
  • The chief of police in Suðurnes has decided that residents who have received a summons to retrieve valuables today, Monday, will come along Suðurstrandarvegur and not Grindavíkurvegur or Norðurljósvegur as has been the case. People are asked to be patient.
  • Ingibjörg Lilja Ómarsdóttir, director of the service and drop-in centre for Grindavík residents, encourages evacuees to come to the facility at the old toll house at Tryggvagata in Reykjavík. The PM and others will visit today.

Ps. This is a hobby for me, some watch sports but I really really like volcanoes and earth movements in Iceland so feel free to ask away :)
