Announcing my latest creation, Ducky Derby!

I have recently designed a new, more easily portable 3d printed version of the horse race game, but with rubber ducks. And magnets. And in a pool.

Why might you want this?
Ducky Derby offers several advantages to the standard wooden horse race game boards (more details here for those unfamiliar with the horse race game: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/official-horse-race-game-thread.87186/ ), including:
  • Easy to identify racers. The standard game includes generic racing pieces that all look the same, without distinguishing colors or number. Ducky Derby provides a number on each racer's jockey helmet, in traditional racing colors, making it far easier to track which racer is which during the game.
  • Magnets. Instead of pegs on the racers and holes in the game board, Ducky Derby features magnets embedded in the ducks and affixed to the board. Moving your racers forward from magnet to magnet is easier and more fun, as the next magnet almost magically grabs the racer and slide it into place once you start moving your duck forward.
  • More balanced odds. The standard boards skew probabilty so that the 2 and 12 racers win a disproportionately high amount of the time. This board provides a far more balanced race where every number has between an 8% to 10% chance at winning
  • Easier to identify penalty amounts. The standard boards track scratched races by moving them backwards to one of 44 holes and you have to know what each hole means in order to identify the amount each scratched racer costs. Ducky Derby makes it far easier to identify penalty amounts with an easy to read and customizable Disqualified score board - simply decide what bet size you want to use and place the magnetic denomination plates that correspond with 1x, 2x, 3x and 4x bets into the slots on the right-hand side of that board. Then as you identify the four racers disqualified from the race, remove those ducks from the starting line and place them on their corresponding magnetic racer number plates on the left-hand side of the Disqualified score board.
  • Customizability. Ducky Derby includes 8 different denomination plates, so you can change your bet amounts based on your players' preferences. Want to play $.25/$.50/$.75/$1? Just choose those plates. Rather play $1/$2/$3/$4? Great, use those plates instead. And if you prefer to play with different denominations than those included in the standard set, message me, as I am sure I could create custom plates for you.
  • Portability. The standard wooden board is approximately 22in x 12in. Ducky Derby is approximately 8in x 16in when assembled, but it collapses down to an even more portable 8in x 8in size for easy transportability.
  • Coolness factor. Ducky Derby comes with a metal tin which holds all 11 racers, all 11 racer number plates and 8 denomination plates. And the tin magnetically attaches to the discard cutout contained in the board underneath the starting blocks further improving portability.
  • More fun colors. And rubber ducks! The standard game contains a few bland colors printed on the wooden board and generic racing pieces. An no rubber ducks! Ducky Derby contains brightly colored plates to indicate each lane number, a four-color pool complete with lane dividers, and an easy-to-read score board. And colorful rubber ducks wearing jockey helmets with racing goggles above the brim! Which is more appealing: bland, generic horses, or fun, colorful rubber ducks wearing cool racing gear? Ducky Derby may look more fun because it simply is more fun!
More details about the game:
The main game board comes apart into 3 pieces, from left to right: the finish line, the pool, and the starting blocks:

The finish line includes pegs that fit into holes on the pool and the pool includes pegs that fit into holes on the starting blocks. Just connect the three pieces together to get your board ready to play, and then start moving your ducks into place.

The racer number plates each include a colored back to match the colors of that racer, making it easier to quickly identify which plate corresponds to which number as you are adding disqualified racers to the scoreboard:

Denomination plates range from $0.25 to $5, but additional denominations can be created.

I designed the game pieces (11 ducks, 11 racer number plates and 8 denomination plates) to fit in this cool altoids-sized tin for easy of transport, which attaches to a magnet in the board's discard slot:

In total, the game contains 50 total 3d-printed parts, a metal tin, and 162 magnets, each of which must be aligned with polarity facing in the proper direction, a fairly labor-intensive process to install. But that work has already been done for you. All you need to do is add dice, a deck or cards, and poker chips. And we all know you already have those things...

Easy portability.
When you are done playing, the board collapses down by taking the finish line and connecting its pegs into the starting gate, and then placing those pieces on the top of the pool. Magnets in the bottom of the finish line and starting blocks will grab magnets from the pool to hold the board together.

Put the ducks, racer number plates and denomination plates back into the storage tin and place that tin into the discard cutout. A magnet in the cutout holds the tin in place:

Pricing:
Each Ducky Derby game contains the three-part game board, 11 ducks with embedded magnets, 11 racer number plates, 8 denomination plates (everything printed in PETG) and a storage tin.
$79 plus shipping.

*I have a VERY LIMITED number of these currently in stock. So after this first batch goes, there may be a slight delay before your game can ship. But I am continuing to print them and plan to do so as long as there is enough interest.

And for any of you that have a 3d printer capable of printing in multiple colors, feel free to download the model from my makerworld page and print it yourself:

https://makerworld.com/en/models/27...tic-rubber-duck-racing-game#profileId-3045752

You will need about a dozen colors of filament, a bunch of 5mm x 2mm magnets and some superglue; detailed assembly instructions included on that page. I also included a detailed and easy to print rules sheet pdf on that makerworld page, which includes some of the additional optional rules we have created in our home game for anyone who may be interested. But I will try to paste that info into a subsequent post below as well.

Thanks!

DUCKY DERBY - RULES SHEET

ADDITIONAL ITEMS NEEDED TO PLAY GAME
  • Standard 52-card deck of cards
  • Two standard 6-sided dice
  • Poker chips (or coins) for bets

SET-UP
  • Assemble board by connecting 3 board pieces (starting gate with pool and pool with finish line).
  • Place each racer on its respective starting block (in front of lane number).
  • Determine what bet size you would like to use and attach corresponding DENOMINATION PLATE to the right hand column of the Disqualified board:
    • Top slot = 1 bet; second slot = 2 bets; third slot = 3 bets and fourth slot = 4 bets.
    • So, for example, if your bet size is 25 cents, you would attach the 25 cents, 50 cents, 75 cents and $1 denomination plates; if your bet size is $1, you would attach $1, $2, $3 and $4.
  • Each player antes 4 bets
    • 3 bets from each player go into the JOCKEY FEE (see PAYOUTS below for more details) and should be placed on the finish line.
    • 1 bet from each player goes into the POT (see PAYOUTS below for more details) which should be maintained to the side of the game board.
  • Remove all Aces and Kings from a standard deck of cards and shuffle the remaining 44 cards.

PRE-RACE QUALIFIER
  • Deal cards face up to each player until all cards are dealt. Some players may end up with an extra card.
  • Each card constitutes a bet on a racer to win the race.
    • A numbered card is a bet on that racer number to win (for example, the 4 of diamonds is a bet on racer no. 4; the 7 of spades is a bet on racer no. 7; etc.).
    • Each Jack is a bet on racer no. 11 and each Queen is a bet on racer no. 12.
  • Determine the four DISQUALIFIED racers:
    • The player to the left of the dealer rolls both dice. The sum of the two rolled numbers corresponds to the first disqualified racer (so, for example, if a 2 and 5 are rolled, racer no. 7 is disqualified).
    • Attach the RACER NUMBER PLATE of the first disqualified racer to the top slot in the left hand column of the Disqualified board. Remove that racer from the starting block and attach it to the magnet on that plate.
    • Each player with a bet on that first disqualified racer must discard that card and pay a penalty of 1 bet per card held to the POT.
    • The next player then rolls both dice to determine the next disqualified racer.
      • If the sum the player rolls is an already-disqualified number, they must pay the penalty indicated on the Disqualified board and pass the dice to the next player.
      • If the sum the player rolls is a new number, add that number to the Disqualified board as indicated above (attach the corresponding RACER NUMBER PLATE to the second slot on the Disqualified board and move the racer from the starting blocks to the magnet on that plate). Each player with a bet on that racer discards and pays 2 bets per card held to the POT.
    • Repeat this process (with the third disqualified racer costing 3 bets and fourth costing 4 bets) until 4 racers have been disqualified and corresponding cards discarded. Seven racers should be at their starting blocks, the Disqualified board should be full and you are now ready to start the race!
START THE RACE!
  • The player to the left of the player who rolled the final disqualification number starts the race by rolling both dice and adding the numbers together.
    • If the player rolls any disqualified racer number, they must pay the corresponding penalty indicated on the Disqualified board to the POT and then pass the dice to the next player.
    • If the player rolls the number of any live racer, move that racer forward to the next open magnet in that racer’s lane and then pass the dice to the next player.
  • Keep rolling until the winning racer crosses the finish line by moving from the last magnet in their pool lane to the magnet on the finish line.
PAYOUTS
  • The player who made the final dice roll that resulted in the winning racer crossing the finish line receives the JOCKEY FEE.
  • Each player with a bet on the winning racer wins 25% of the POT for each card held.
    • Thus, if four different players each have one card of the winning racer, they each get 25% of the POT. Anyone without that card receives nothing from the POT.
    • If one player has 2 bets on the racer that wins, they get 50%; 3 bets gets 75%, and 4 bets gets the entire POT!
  • Start the next race by moving all the racers back to the starting blocks and clearing the left side of the Disqualfied board.
OPTIONAL RULES
  • At the start of the game, players add an additional POKER ANTE (the number of bets should be agreed upon by the players) that goes into the poker pool. The player dealt the best poker hand is awarded the poker pool before starting the Pre-Race Qualifier.
  • Any time a player rolls doubles, that player must roll again before passing the dice.
  • Any time a player rolls a 2 or a 12, each other player must pay the rolling player 1 bet.
  • If a player rolls doubles 3 times in a row, that player shall move one racer that is already in the pool backwards one slot.
  • If a player rolls double 4 times in a row, that player shall move one racer forward one slot (so long as that racer is not already in the last slot of their pool lane).
  • If a player rolls 5 doubles in a row, they can steal one card of their choice from any player
  • If a player rolls 6 doubles in a row, the race ends and that player wins the jockey fee and the entire POT.
  • Once a racer reaches the last magnet in their lane, the game switches into FRENZY MODE from that point until the end of the game. During FRENZY MODE, all bets are doubled (so, for example, if you roll the number of the first disqualified racer, you must pay 2 bets instead of 1; if you roll the fourth disqualified number you must pay 8 bets instead of 4 and if you roll a 2 or 12, everyone must pay you 2 bets instead of 1). One bet from each FRENZY MODE penalty goes to the JOCKEY FEE; the remaining bets go to the POT.

This looks wild! How many players can play? You guys play this before your games get going, while waiting for everyone to arrive?

Sounds super fun! Would love to see a video on this. I’m a visual learner 😁

Theoretically you can play with as few as two players, though I would probably remove one color from the deck if you played that short and make each winning card worth half the pot instead of 1/4 with all four suits included. We have found that 5+ players is more fun. But it is a blast.

We play a lot of dealers choice in my game so players will call this game as their game of choice when it is their turn to choose. When we first started playing, there were nights where we just played this back to back to back for hours. But nowadays, we usually mix this in once or twice a night on average. People do play it at the start of the night or the end as sort of a hee haw/flip as well.

Games usually take around 10-15 minutes and when the racers approach the finish line, it can get pretty crazy as people root for their racers.

Highly recommend. There’s a reason so many on PCF picked up fineni boards and started working this into their home games. It’s just dumb fun.

Hello, I am interested in purchasing this game duck game as well. I realize I have been off of the site for some time now. This would be my first purchase. Please let me know if I need to do anything additional. Thanks.

dibs one if you’re still alive
I am, in fact, alive. LOL.

I will follow up with everyone who expressed interest in the near future to get payment and shipping info. Thanks for everyone's interest in these. The initial batch I had in stock has now been claimed, but I have more going on the 3d printer right now, so if you are interested in picking one up, just let me know.

Messages sent out to everyone who has indicated interest so far. My shipping boxes arrived and it looks like a ballpark estimate for shipping cost to a US address should be around $10-11, depending on where you are located.

Thanks again to everyone for the interest! More should be available in the very near future.

The first batch of Ducky Derby games is on their way to their new owners. I currently have one game I just pulled off the printer that is not yet claimed. But the rest of my initial stock is claimed.

If you are interested in picking up a game, let me know, as I can make more as needed.

Thanks again!
