Chips are no longer necessary (2 Viewers)

Mods, can we please delete this thread? I find the notion of replacing chips with an electronic alternative extremely offensive and triggering.
I couldn't agree more!!! I don't wanna even imagine playing poker like that!!! However, I believe that should poker be played in a similar digitalized manner in the future, then chips will increase in value even more....

Years back they tried electronic tables at all the cardrooms around here. It was a trial run as they were loaned from the manufacturer to try and convince the establishments to buy them.

They did NOT take off.
And, we proved the software could not be trusted.

Every night we'd fill the table full of buddies to test it. Every single night without fail 1 random spot would be pre-selected by the software as the night's winner. And by that, I mean that spot would win a large majority of hands.

Actually, about 9/10 hands they'd play. Normal players folding 7-2 and crappy starting hands may not have noticed this programming behavior. But we were there to test the software. We knew the owners, they wanted our opinions. We played every hand to completion no matter what. Each and every night the same shit happened. One spot was selected to win 9/10 hands without fail.

Not only that, it seemed most of the time to create all-in or big bet situations. You went in with AK and got a straight on turn or river, but buddy in the lucky spot who went in with 8-2 would get a flush on the river.

We will never trust an electronic table after that. At the time I went on other forums and people in other cities/countries had played the same brand/model of table and experienced the same results.

(One night the table had a spot open and a drunk guy came in and sat down. We had been saying it's weird, there doesn't seem to be a "lucky" spot tonight. It was the empty spot he sat in. We said nothing waiting to see what would happen. He noticed quickly, commenting "guys, it won't let me lose. Watch, I'll play 8-2. Someone call me." We proceeded as usual to call and keep testing the table and he realised as we did, it was impossible to lose in that spot. We spread the word. Testing over, get rid of these tables.)

The OP scares me folks. Not gonna lie. Even though he's likely joking or trolling...

I'm a blue collar guy, and the idea that my chips could become worthless is a bit unsettling.

Not a good thread for me to read today. I'm in an already fragile state of mind with respect to my chips.

The idea of hosting is over for me. We got Canadian police handing out fines for organizing home poker. I'm running on addiction and I have no functional use for more chips.

That sucks about the fines. What is the fine for hosting a home poker game?

Yikes! Decriminalize Home Games now! That’s some bs. Imagine your micro stakes cash game getting busted up and you getting slapped with $2,300 fine. That’s awful. Oh I just caught that it’s a COVID related fine. You better be nice to your neighbors so they don’t snitch you out.

It's like the self checkout at stores now... in the beginning everyone said... I'm not using that crap!! These people need to do their jobs!!

But when the teller lines are long we all jump over to self check out to get the hell put of there!!

On an average Saturday evening at National Harbor MGM casino, they wait for a seat at 1/3 or 2/5 can be hours long... if you look over and see a empty seat at the electronic poker table say playing $1/$2... are you going to wait around forever... or sit down and give it a try??

I bet 8/10 would try it!! I would!

I used to play live roulette @BonScot but when they came out with the video boards and still dropping the real ball (not a digital ball) that has been my go to night time post up for years now!! I only play $3 - $5 a roll... but I pay my money to the drink ladies... at 4 am they have nothing to do usually... I pay $2 a drink for a frozen Margarita/ a margarita on the rocks and a bud light... $6 each time they walk around... and they walk around a lot!! Lol it's the perfect set up while basically playing penny alot roulette!! Haha

Ohh and side note for those who don't pull all lighters in vegas... 3 - 4am is the best time... for another reason. The young women heading up the elevators with the much older gentleman are all finishing up whatever they are doing up there in those old guys rooms... I usually assume coloring.

Many of them come down and sit at the video Roulette wheel and give their luck a try... see if they can make a little more!

For a people watcher like myself you can have some truly amazing conversations with these amazing people that are usually dressed like they are headed to the pool or something... I always have to do my civic duty to let them know... hey the pools aren't open for a few more hours... but it is warm there so I understand the need for minimal clothing!! Not sure what the High heels are for... at least I have a conversation starter for next time!! Lmao

Honestly, the digitalisation of everything nowadays is becoming so boring — almost embarrassing.

It seems to me as though companies are increasingly trying to suck the human element out of everyday things — producing tech for tech's sake, quite frankly.

For example, every other ad I seem to get served on Instagram is for a company that offers a digital subscription service for the most mundane of items: boxers shorts, detergent tablets and, I kid you not, cacti!

Have we become so effing scared of human interaction and socialising that we can't just pop down the road to a shop to get these things?!

If poker players want a digital experience, then they've got online play for that. If we want a live experience, then most of us will want chips and cards in front us — and that's applicable to non-chippers, too. In light of this year's events, all of the players at my home game last year said how much of a joy it was to enjoy live poker and everything that goes with it once again

There are some things that "digital innovation" can't replace. I'm confident that the concept found in the OP falls into the category — and won't become the norm, thankfully.

I still believe as a convenience factor that these will be used in casinos while waiting for live play... not saying replace but compliment. Also there are going to be people for years to come now that will be fearful and not want to touch things like chips that get passed around.

I do not play online poker, can't stand it... not at all a fan of this either other than it's pretty cool! But it is all digital, therefore odds can be tampered with to influence action and larger rakes for casinos (those that are percentage based).

Even on the digital/ real ball drop roulette tables... if you wanted to be a conspiracy theorist... is it possible to make the wheel spin at an exact speed and someone to figure out where to stop the wheel based off calculations that every time the ball will drop within a few numbers? Sure, is it also possible to have magnets below each number to influence drops and have them turn off as the ball falls into the slot so it can move freely? Sure I would say it could be manipulated... but I play for such low stakes who really cares... I'm just drinking anyways!! Lol

They change the odds to crap in off hours on slot machines, but you can go in almost any casino anywhere in the world and someone is playing slots... just saying there are people that will play them! Especially if they get the glitches out and they maintain a high level of efficiency!

Really good point about the post-Covid fear factor... Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Well thank you for taking the time to read yet again another terribly long Ben book... where I probably could have and should have condensed down to a few lines of text! I'm just not very good at the short version....

Like that radio commercial for Pepsi... my one Youtude subscriber is going to love this post!!! Lmao

Why would this happen? In fact, if chips were no to longer be made, our collections would be worth way more, as long as they are playable, and as long as home game poker is a thing. Which will be a thing for a long time coming, I reckon.

The only great improvement in on-line poker that *might* get more traction from enthusiasts would be some fully immersive VR.

I can almost see the appear of these, perhaps in a casino, but more so in a pub environment where a group are out for some beers and want to have a quick game - without the hassle of setting up chips, getting cards etc etc! I guess akin to those quiz machines. But for the time being at least they are a pretty high price point for most places.

This is a no go for me. Half the point of live poker is the tactile experience (for me anyway).
This ^^. Since March our weekly game as moved online and we run a video chat alongside it. Whilst it's a great distraction and the video chat helps, it's just not the same! I really miss sitting there shuffling chips, heck, even dealing the cards! As @jr8719 says, I just don't trust online poker. Some of the bad beats since March are just insane! My worst one recently was all in on the flop where I had a 99.7% of winning, but noooooope! villian gets runner runner King's to win. JFC! :vomit:
