Chinese Clay Recommendations (1 Viewer)

The only flaw I can see with the Dunes is the color of the 25 which is quite similar with the 5000 one. Hopefully edge spots are there to avoid any confusion.

If I were to get a set of dunes for any reason I'd likely opt away from the 25 in lieu of their 20... purely based on that I prefer its chip and spot colors over that of the 25.

EDIT: Heh.. just noticed upNdown's post and avatar pic. Nice chip! lol

Yes. Long live 5 denom starting stacks! Let's play DEEP!!

The thing is that I’ve a small set of Dunes (300) which I use to normally play 6-max (12/12/7/x) for T5K to T15K. So there with 4 denoms I’m fine. Only T20K requires an additional T5000 but I don’t really like starting 400BB deep. I prefer to focus on a smoother and slower blind progression.

This set can also be used to accommodate up-to 9 players (8/8/4/x/y). But then 5 denoms shall be in play.

They have obviously more constraints than us but at the WSOP, but for the H.O.R.S.E T30K event they use 12/12/3/12/3 as starting stacks. But since it’s limit game, T5K is hardly used in first levels.

I have to say I'm impressed so far not only with the amount of collective poker chip knowledge on this forum, but also how people are already seeming to look out for me as a newbie and make such good recommendations. Thanks!

On the quality of the china clays, from some of the samples I've already gotten I've noticed that the labels are pretty well done so far (centered well and I like the texture more than I thought I would). Anybody have experience with how the labels hold up over time? I'm aware I may receive some that aren't as well done as the samples, but for those that are good out of the box I'm curious if people have seen labels come off over time or any other issues.

I've never heard of people complaining about the integrity of the labels on the most commonly used CC's out there, namely Pharaohs, Milanos, Majestics, Dunes, etc. But then again, I've never taken oil to them, so maybe someone can speak to that.

Actually, for me the long term cheapest solution would have been straight to CPC. I went from Nexgen to PNYs to CPC.

No labels have been ever come off in the nine years of weekly play.

Hey guys, new here also but this thread seemed the most relevant to my needs since you were discussing the Dune 20s vs 25s.

I play poker but I have the additional need for chips for economic board games that we play weekly. Specifically we play some 18xx games which everyone in the 18xx community agrees should use 20s instead of 25s because a lot of the purchases in the game are for 20 or 40 depending on the game.

So I find myself wanting to buy a set of 400 to 500 chips that will accommodate poker as well as board games. I had my eyes on pharaohs and Makestics but just now saw that dunes had 20s built in.

If I end up liking the feel of the China Clay's, it seems the logical choice to go with the dunes with 20s, but is that going to confuse any poker players that ever play with me? Should I get a stack of the 25s also?

Anyone else in my boat?

If you play poker as cash game, I think it’s actually better to have a $20 rather than a $25.

For tournaments, I’d go with the $25. Although a $20 chip could be fine in a T5 base set (a set with 5 being the lowest denomination).

I'll assume you want a set of chips that will accommodate a CASH poker game as well as a board game.
Have you given consideration to a quality non-denominated chip? Or something you could potentially customize?
I could potentially do a 4- or 5-colour solid Paulson THC set in quantities and colours suitable for a 0.25/1/5/20/(100) cash game that could also be used as board game markers/currency/what have you, starting at $0.65 (or less) per chip. Even customizable with @Gear labels. Feel free to PM me if you want to know more.

I just got my sample of the majestics from apache, and coming from the 11.5 dice chips, i have to say I can tell the weight difference. The Majestics just feel wimpy. It may be adjustment what do you guy think? I also am not sure about the brightness /colorless of the chips. I have washed them but they are still drab. I know I can oil them and I will try that. But I feel disappointed with them so far. I really want my chips to POP! any recommendations on the most colorful chips?

Check out the Royals 43mm from Apache. They seem universally loved here and I quickly found out why after getting my samples. They are super solid and the colors are amazing

Just be aware that there are a lot of people that bought brand new Paulsons for sub $2 apiece and now sell them for $6+ apiece
Regularly because of “market demand“.
A lot of these people will say you need to buy Paulsons immediately, and I think there may be an ulterior motive involved but I’m not sure.

Move at your own pace and buy what YOU like. The only way to find out what you like is to start buying samples, sets, or barrels, whatever makes you feel comfortable, and whatever fits your budget.

If you don’t want to put in that time, then you’d be better off just sending your money to someone you trust here and asking them to buy you a nice set.

Give it a few for adjustment, especially with you coming from heavier dice chips.

Majestics will "pop" after some light mineral oiling and you'll immediately see the difference. Exhibit A from @JMC9389's set that he posted last year: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/majestic-cc-pron.45108/

Good advice here.

I have had some of every manufacturer during my chipping career and many sets considered to be grail sets on this forum. Now all I have are my Chipco customs and my ASM customs and I’m perfectly happy. You don’t need Paulsons. Had em they are nice. Sold em. One thing I can say for Paulsons and trks. I always sold them without taking a loss. There is that.

If you're used to 11.5 chips, then the chips in the 8-10 range are going to feel off. If you switch, you'll get used to the lighter chips pretty quickly. Most people on this forum prefer the chips that are in the lighter range (for many reasons, not just their weight) but that doesn't matter; what matters is what you like.

If it helps you with your decision, consider that most casinos use chips that are about 9-10 grams. Chips with metal slugs in them like the dice chips are often marketed as "casino weight" but that's only in the sense that supermarket plastic interlocking chips are about 2 grams and both casino and dice chips are much, much heavier than that. There is no "official" casino chip weight, but dice chips are moderately heavier than what casinos generally use.

My biggest pet peeve is showing my real Paulson casino chips to players and them picking one up feeling it in their hand and saying “ehh, it’s a little light I think.”

Ugh...Dude, they don’t get any more real than this....they are real casino chips... this is their weight. This is the standard. 9-10 grams.

I wonder why most on this forum prefer the 9-10 grams? I think one reason could be not the only chip weight but the stack weight. Consider that one chip is negligible at 11.5 grams but a stack of stack of 10 would be 115 grams. Versus a stack of 9 gram chips would be 90 grams. I definitely feel that weight.

Well, it's not just the weight. It just so happens that most of the chips which are prettier, are made out of nicer materials, have a more interesting history, are less slippery, etc also happen to have weights in about that range. Because most of them are actual casino clays, or are made to closely resemble actual casino clays, which usually weigh 9-10 grams.

I’m sure I’m in the minority here, but I actually really like the weight of the 14g slugs. Bluff Canyons shuffle much better than my milanos.

its definitely okay to get a china clay set and slowly build a Paulson set. That’s what I’m doing. There are a lot of overpriced chips around here and you shouldn’t feel pressured.

I still have samples of the first china clay that PI brought over (wallsons) wish they still make them.
