I'm a super newbie and I'm looking at different options for my first set. I got some samples from Apache and I like the look/feel of their chinese clay options like the Dunes, Majestic, and Pharaoh's, but I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for similar style and price range chips from other vendors. Milanos are fine, but I'm not super interested in their look. Just curious about any other vendors I might be missing. Thanks!

Check out the stock poker chips thread in the resources section.

Good job getting samples :). If you really want to shop around, maybe check out nexgens, but they will feel a bit different than china clay. There are also lots of stock ceramics that are around the china clay price point, but very different feel there also.

As for China clay, CPS is the only one I’ve seen that you don’t have samples for. I personally have the dunes CC. I went that route because of the progressive edge spots and interesting mold (also available on pharaohs). It helps reduce some of the playability issues with the other chips (100 versus 500 CPS isn’t great in low light).

If you go dunes, absolutely use $20 and not the $25 for cash set. The $25 blends a bit with the $5 in stacks (6 25’s hidden below in the three barrels of 5’s)

Loved my Majestics... for the brief time I was able live with myself not having Paulsons.

If you can wait a bit and drop a larger sum on some casino used stuff (or the occasional sweet deal on something here), I'd do that for sure instead.

Nice tip in the $25s blending in with the $5s. Pic is a big help on that!

Yeah Paulsons would be pretty sweet...

I don't think we should be wholesale encouraging new chippers to start with Paulsons (or Bud Joneses or TRKs or custom CPC or whatever) because they have legit concerns like:
- budget constraints
- time constraints
- player constraints
- spouse irritability constraints

Let everyone move into their hobby at their own pace, eh?

Long-term, it's the cheapest solution.

I think we should encourage them to consider it.
I don't have to have the best of everything, but I do like to get the best bang for my buck. To my way of thinking, that might be $1-$2 clays that are top quality, will last forever, and retain their resale value, or it could be some of the cheaper, but decent quality plastic options that are cheap enough to be almost disposable. But it's definitely not 35-45 cent china clays. I know some people think they're a good compromise, but I don't.
My point is just that if somebody's ready to pay $300-$400+ for china clays, they should stop to consider if they might be better off in the long run spending more, or even less.

I agree on the considering it. Reminds me a little bit of how I seem to never learn my lesson when given a less and more expensive option for something...I go cheaper, then I'm not happy, and wish I just went more expensive in the first place. Not that you couldn't resell china clays to help fund a set of Paulsons (or the like) but I don't know what the market is like for used china clays. On the other hand, if it ain't gonna happen for one or more of the constraints mentioned, I get that too. The addictive nature of the hobby doesn't help matters.

Well its only addictive to some people. I know way more people that play poker regularly with dice chips than people that are into Paulsons...

Most people like poker for the social and gambling aspect. The assumption that most people are like us and will eventually need to play with Paulsons and Design cards is incorrect.

PS I have CC chips for sale...lol

I think the real assumption is that most people (who discover this place and then stick around) are like us and will eventually need to play with Paulsons. :)

I know way more people (on this site) who play poker regularly with Paulsons and other high-end chips and wouldn't be caught dead playing with dice chips unless there was absolutely no other option.

It's all relative. When in Rome.....

I feel like once I get a full cash set of casino/paulson chips, I'll rarely go back to my China clay pharaohs. I like the design of the China clay pharaohs over the paulson pharaohs, but wish they had the quality of paulsons. Do you guys go back to China clays after owning paulsons/casino sets?

I've 2 sets of China Clays:
- Majestics
- Dunes (the latest ones, from Apache)

What I like with those series is that there is additional stuff to complete the sets:
- dealer buttons
- plaques

The only flaw I can see with the Dunes is the color of the 25 which is quite similar with the 5000 one. Hopefully edge spots are there to avoid any confusion.
For the rest, it's all about design preference.

Are there any paulsons that are similar look to Majestics? I just recently joined the forum and completely new to this world. There is a set of stardust that I saw that I love as well though. Vivid colors + the black center.

You should not have the 25s and 5000s in play at the table at the same so it is a moot point. Introduce the 5000 once the 25 are colored up.

Not necessarily. T15K starting stacks and larger often contain T5000 chips (12/12/5/6/x or 8/8/4/7/x).
