You're dead wrong on this one -- that decision is not up to Sal/OWPS. It is extremely unlikely that using the GCOP artwork ever gets authorized for hybrids or ceramics beyond what has already been approved.

Yah.. after I reflected on this earlier it made sense why OWPS only sells the high denominations. They're denied from doing replica low ones.

If one were to spend the time to find them, there are many Chinese vendors who do not care about copyright or trademark issues or the possibility of litigation. However, that doesn't mean we can use them in a GB. As a side note, I wonder if any individual has experimented with these vendors.
I paged through Alibaba about a year back but I remember it was just reseller after reseller. Its hard to find out who the genuine manufacturer is.
Yes. There was a low-minimum quantity (3000 chips, I think) semi-custom set made for a private CT member on the coffee & biscuit mold (a MrEU design). He paid a hefty premium to get such a low number of chips produced, but it sparked considerable interest in the community.
It all eventually led to the BLGOP group buy (featuring the first tower & spear mold) with that vendor, with a minimum order requirement of 30,000 chips. Custom molds were created, prototype chips were produced, and orders for a whopping 300,000+ chips were taken. Everything was rolling along like gangbusters, including the design of matching specialty items like dealer buttons, seating chips, bounty chips, etc.
When the vendor balked during the prototype phase on their earlier promises regarding color-matching, the effort was eventually disbanded....and was later resurrected as the CPS buy with slightly different artwork (and using PGI's vendor in China).

I would like to point out, those Alibaba vendors use stock photos of genuine chips to sell cheaply made chips. Don't be fooled.
Regarding names that aren't WSOP, I like "World Champion of Poker" as it has a strong historical connection to the beginning of the WSOP as a title awarded to the first main event winner.

Any progress on this project? does anyone want to take a crack at finishing the artwork and the set?
Also, if the experienced higher-ups think projects such as these are DOA, they should chime in as it is likely to nudge the masses to perhaps pursue their own projects individually.
My understanding now is that this is likely a dead project and we should all move on.
I am reading between the lines, but that's just a part of it. There are many issues with GBs currently, mostly related to the two recently cancelled ones, and I believe it is likely to have an impact on this one as well. No one is going to take any risk with such projects. My guess is that none of these projects will happen in 2017 and we will have to wait and see how and when the dust settles. Unless some people start working on a completely new and original set, we will have to go back to our old hobby and be content with our obsessions over over-priced Paulsons and or start our own small individual custom sets. At least this is my read.

Probably the best course of action. A completely new design is likely to garner more support and be feasible for GB operators and or vendors to handle.
Everyone liked the WSOP edge spots right? Why not do a chip set using the same design and we just pick and choose our own colors? I think its cheaper to manufacture if the edge spots remain the same across denoms right?

The reason tribute sets work so well in GBs is because we can all relate to them. Once you start meddling around with different colors interest drops off considerably. The same thing goes with label designs. If you try to allow everyone to chime in on a design, nothing gets done. Too many cooks and all that.
The best way to get a new set of chips done is for a vendor to make the chip/label decisions and just have the chips made. They can show them here first to make sure there is interest (i.e. guaranteed sales). They usually offer them here for cheaper than they will eventually sell them for on the open market.
If you really want an idea made, go custom.
Finally...
The cost of the canvas that the Mona Lisa was painted on was just a few coins. What was applied to that canvas made it priceless.
