Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (194 Viewers)

I agree with everything above except that ESPT is an exquisite 7 course meal at a 3 michillen star resturant. It is an exquisite 6 course meal at a 3 michillen star resturant with a mid apartif. The ESPT 5 is not amazing and thus it is often left out when talking about the set as a whole. I would take AS cash 5 or RPC cash 5 as a substitute any day of the week.

It’s left out because it’s one of the rarest in that set. Not many out there and not many do T5 config. But that is a perfect take for this thread :)

I love the ESPT T5. Love the spot + colors, and am also a big believer in low denoms being less complex and the table getting more exciting as high denoms arrive (especially for tournament sets). Think it does its job perfectly, and makes perfect sense in the progression of triangles to sticks in the set.

This dovetails well into my/our next controversial opinion.

You don’t want all chips in a lineup to be outrageous bangers.

5 denoms in play isn’t atypical in cash games. Add in special chips like nit buttons, imperfect lighting at your improvised basement poker room, late night / drinking and things can get sloppy quickly.

Simpler smaller denoms allow enough disparate colors to be available for bigger chips with more complex spots without drama and issues.

To me, the RPC sets look like what you’d get if you asked Microsoft CoPilot to design a set of bright/colourful poker chips. :ninja:

Some nice individual chips, but a cohesive lineup is nowhere to be found. And don’t get me started about that inlay… woof.

I am assuming you have not seen the ESPT T5 in person? I believe it is radiant red, which just does not photo well. I was of similar opinion until I got my hand on a sample set. It is a fantastic chip. Most people don’t use a T5, so that is also a reason it is omitted.

Seriously. RPC cash are all over the place and the inlay is god aweful. I think of RPC as a set made to be murdered.

People should realize that a lot of opinions on NAGB chips go well beyond the clay and inlay/hot-stamps themselves, whether positive or negative.

Love or hate the organizer? Are y'all friends? Hate that you were spurned or shut-out despite thinking you deserved more? Were you part of the (NA)GB in design, opinion, or monetarily? Is your public opinion going to help/hurt your investment, so you share it accordingly? Were you part of the IPO and feel like you are with the "in group"? Are you angry how the sales were conducted? Do you appreciate how sales were conducted? Were you sold chips for Price X and found out they went cheaper at Price Y to someone else? Is it your 'time of the month'? Are the chips out of your budget and you have FOMO? Are you mad someone bringing chips to the market devalued yours? Do you hate that someone else is making money off of other chippers (despite a completely voluntary transaction)? And so on and so forth.

*I'm not accusing anyone specifically of being biased in any respects, but "you had to be there" at the reveals to understand there is more at play than the clay.* Things are tame now, but there was a ton of vitriol with the original boat chips, some personal sets that got axed due to people reporting to GPI, RPC, and Tigers. The fact is, like @Tonysquander said, you can ignore much of the conversation(s) and see how the market ultimately dictates the real sentiment on NAGB chips (assuming genuine sale posts - although Windwalker is gone so less of a conern). Post is more of an FYI to the newer members than anything.

Could not pass on these for the price even though I kinda hated the $5s. After reading this, I don't hate the $5s anymore. You want a very plain and boring $5 and these Casablanca $5s absolutely nail that. This way people don't get too excited before the Day Green and Purple $25s and GOATish Gray hundos hit the felt.

Also need to take into account that a small amount of people feel the strongest and post the most.

Plus as a hobby/group we seem to be a group of people that never peaked and are at best socially awkward with a desire to be liked, resulting in extreme cj’ing.

This might be true of all deep end hobby/groups, idk this is my first.

As a new person and an outsider, just reading and learning as I go, it is a little funny to watch the community and what comes and goes, what people argue about and get mad at that it is very specific to this niche market that most people would never even think it, or the products/services produced, exist.

It’s like discovering a mini new world lol

holy GIF

Edit: just fyi, not making fun or trivializing people or things, it’s just fun to watch sometimes

I don't understand new things because I am old.
To be fair, I don’t think anyone understands why it was done.

I’ve heard whispers that 5,000 reward points can be turned in for a “get of jail free” card if you’re banned. So I’m trying to save up 10k in case I decide to post honest musings one day.

I wonder if reward points can get me unbanned from chipper…
