Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (8 Viewers)

I don't necessarily disagree with the sentiment, but if the inserts and inlay/hot-stamp are strong or hot enough they can make up for that and create a more unique look versus just another THC chip. Of course, such exceptions are probably more rare than not, especially in quantity, but I think the below is one of them, as an example.

I think the distinction more so lies with new-gen house molds being more to RHCs in their ring/inner-clay sizing, versus the older ones being more like THCs in those same aspects, although the latter still needs to nail the inserts and inlay to not hit the "low".
Those are certainly above average molds, and it doesn't hurt that they have kick-ass colors and spots.

I remember when hotstamps were 2nd rate citizens here just 5+ years ago.

I love em all, but wanted really specific ones that worked well together. Then, a popular pcfer showed some magical things that could be done with them, and overnight hotstamps became a star in their own right. What really happened is 10+ people decided to go for sets around the same time, prices jacked way up, and everyone that had them realized it was great trade bait - instantly, and to this day half a decade later, killing any movement and most ability to build above average HS sets, especially for new folks.

So I'm always unsure when reading opinions here - how many are insightful, personal takes, and how many are just parroting the current lay of the land as it were.

All that being said, yes I do agree that hotstamp housemolds are probably the least likely of all chips to appear visually appealing. On that note, if everyone could please send me their spotted hotstamp housemold chips, for destruction, that would be great.

Yes yes yes! Team small recess, broad shoulders!

This was discussed back on the blue wall, then I believe again in the early days of PCF.

MOst people don't like hotstamps when they start chipping. Like bourbon or coffee, nobody's first reaction is "this is good". Years of chipping and you start to sway toward an appreciation for the hotstamp. Although it may not be your preference, you can appreciate a good stamp with some chipping under your belt.

PCF has seen an influx of new members in the past 5-7 years (yourself included). Those members have now softened their hearts toward the hotstamp, thus the "2nd rate" to "acceptable" promotion.

Nope. That’s a nice way to put it though. And I’m prob wrong, but based on my personal experience (who built those sets, who held racks, etc.), I’m gonna say wrong.

And I was intimately involved in going through rack after rack and searching for years.

But I hope you’re right. It’d be nice to think folks could think for themselves. Then again, people bought Jack Detroits, so I lean more towards people are mindless lemmings.

God awful jack detroits used as my supplemental evidence for that. (On that note, I used to think they were overpriced. Then I saw and played with them at a meetup, now I can’t believe how overpriced that trash is)

I'm not sure if this is a hot take but I think hotstamps look much better on solids than they do on spotted chips. Hotstamps can look good on solids with a nice mold but hotstamping spotted chips is just a complete down-grade from labelling.

I’ve always felt that way too - solid chips look great with hot stamps and not so great with inlays. Spotted chips look great with inlays and not so great with hot stamps.

My take it or leave it attitude for jacks is well documented with objective feedback, I’ve always welcomed evidence to the contrary (I will say there is like one good combination of them that’s alright).

But, then I do have to admit, I got the chance to play with them at a meetup.

That definitely helped, as now I can say without a doubt they are the most overpriced things to ever hit PCF in the last decade.

If JACK Detroit is the chipping equivalent of a Hamburger, what does that make Tinas?

Sometimes you get tired of filet, and want a hot dog of unknown origins.

No judgement here.

I mean….id rather pay for a can of spam and get a can of spam, rather than pay for a cross world flight to Paris for a Michelin star dinner and get a hamburger.

Edit - I always like to clarify, I am happy to play with anything dice chips up to grails. I jest, but there’s truth to it.
