I love a good rant - let’s goooooo!

It’s come up twice today - one sale with no pictures and one sale with pictures of only the edges, no faces. Personally, I’m torn. I think posting complete pictures is good practice for so many reasons. On the other hand, we’re all adults here - if buyer and seller can come to terms without pictures, fine for them.

Tiebreaker - it reeks of IYKYK smugness and I don’t like it. Post complete pictures, I say!!!

Also, isn't there a strong suggestion to put your user name and date in the photo in the listing? Or has that practice been forgotten/abandoned?

I like to look at pretty chips so I find the pictures helpful.

Also, its fun to see the handwriting of members here. I'm worried if I go to sell chips people will see mine and assume I'm a psycho killer.

Anybody who puts up something for sale without a picture of it in the ad is not really serious about selling it. Too easy for bait and switch tactics, misrepresentation, outright fraud. I ignore all problematic ads like these until the problem is rectified.

Is this the time to point out there are ceramic blanks with debossed hat and cane molds available out there now?

I strongly feel sales threads need more consistent info. Sales threads without photos are lazy and set a bad precedent. Agreed with @HeWhoWouldPun that we should be more insistent on username and data in photos (I know I forget to do it all the time too but it’s best practice and this is good reminder)

That being said, I don’t think it’s too bad for noobs to have to slow down and research chips. Is it really that hard to find the faces of sunset beach chips?

It's not complicated. You post a picture at the time you "submit" your sale thread to avoid any issues. It's not hard to do and you probably already have one on hand. Also, if someone respectfully requests more pics, you either oblige like a reasonable/good seller member would do, or don't (or even complain about their request) because you do you I guess.

There should be an SOP.

A couple of face pics, and barrel pics of everything. It benefits all parties. Removes any ambiguity about the items.

It's kinda lazy not to do so. It takes very little effort.

Always a good idea to post pics in a sale ad.

Also, sellers SHOULD NOT delete the sale price and pics once the item is sold! Past sales are very helpful for sellers to determine market prices. Hard to get info if the sale prices and pics are deleted. Just sayin.

I always took it as laziness on the part of the seller.

If pics become a requirement, at least 1 top-down / aerial view should also be required, IMO, to help combat the subjectivity in condition descriptions.

Pics of faces are always helpful, especially for hot stamps. More helpful to noobs, who don’t always know what an inlay looks like just based on the name.

Someone should make an official grading system…

Not it.

Haven't you heard, everything is mint here on PCF.

Dead mint
Mint
Minty
Mintish
Almost mint
Pretty mintish
Chalky mint
AFAIK mint
I was told it was mint
Mint with 1 use
Mint when I got it x years ago
Mint with just fleabites
Close enough to mint
Mint like pricing
Mint if you squint

Completely agree. Not sure why some people think they're above it because we know what the chips look like; we want to know what your chips looks like — before we drop seriously large amounts of money on them, no less.

Razor sharp…never felted by me

And fwiw, the Subset Beach chips which were listed with just edge shots - I’m not sure what size they are. I THINK all sunset Beach are 43mm, but I’m really not sure. A pic of the face would give away the mold and the size.
I guess if I were in the market for sunsent beach, I’d know. But if I were just looking for a good price on any 43mm chips, I might not.

Totally agree. The justification I've heard is that some people would prefer to keep the information from their spouse . . .

Then just be honest. No reason to be shady, especially in a marriage. Just tell them too much or they don't want to know how much you spent.

Two years plus into this hobby my wife doesn’t not want to hear or see anything to do with chips, with the sole exception of where I keep my stash of nail polish remover.

i actually don't mind it because the seller is only hurting himself. More potential buyer will be interested with better photos. If the ad rots for a few days and seller is more eager to sell, I'm sure he'll stop being lazy and take more photos.

If you want more pics I’m happy to send them
I've seen this a few times. It means the seller doesn't actually have any recent photos, right? If seller already had more pics, they would've already been posted. What's so secretive about the pics that they have to be sent via PM?

I even dislike Wanted ads without photos, especially when there are multiple variants of the chips requested. (Oh, you’re looking for Jack 100s? Detroit or Cincy? Primary or Secondary? Are you sure you know the difference?) A photo decreases the chances of miscommunication, and increases the chances of me remembering, “Oh, yeah, I think I do have a barrel of those to spare.”
