Haven't been involved in this community for too long but am always interested in seeing the chips people come up with. I'd love to make a set of my own chips but that's a little bit down the road for me right now, however that doesn't stop me from trying to come up with ideas for some.

Unfortuanly I'm not really an artist so if the day ever comes i'm going to be relying pretty heavily on outside help. I know a few basics of what I want such as some real bright stand out chips and any $1 must be blue. However outside of that not much, I've played with the chip designer tool a little bit but nothing that I could really be happy with.

But enough about me, how did you come up with your chips? The Colours? The artwork? Theme? I've been brain storming over past couple days can't really think of too much lol be it something like a fake casino or some catchy pun

Welcome, James!

Theme: Think of aspects of poker or life that are important or unique to you and build on that. Embrace the humor, intensity, or whatever makes it cool for you. Localize it if possible. Don't copy a cliche or idea of others. Look thru the gallery and customs threads here for ideas. It could be something as generic yet amazing as the Black Cat Club, or tied to a person, Bill's Haus of Bluff.

Colors/spots: we can help!

Inlay art: one of the great chip artists here will take your ideas and shape them into amazing art. Well worth the small price.

.....Theme: Think of aspects of poker or life that are important or unique to you and build on that.....

I really think that is the most important consideration. A theme that is meaningful to you.
Theres plenty of help available on the rest (color coordination, spot configuration, art, etc)

And welcome to the forum James

Thanks guys, yeah I guess I have some time to think of something or just have an idea that really pops into my head. I would love to do something local to me, not sure how that could translate to a chip though.

How did everyone come up with their theme?

I really like ASOIF (Game of Thrones) so I made a set based on it. :)

Anything you're passionate about is always a good start.

I've noticed your set and actually wanted to ask you, how come none of your chips feature the bigger houses in Westros? Like Stark, Lannister, etc.

What Toby said. The artwork for the cash set is being worked on now.

Most of my sets are "Three Creek Ranch" which is the name of a family property in Colorado. the "3 bar C" is a livestock brand, although its been years since it was used on an animal.

What is the thought on using something licensed sorta?

Just brain storming and thinking a Sonic the Hedgehog sort of theme have a chip be a bit of a reference to a character with the colour I think that could be pretty interesting but would want do do it in a way that is subtle.

I had been reading a book about turn of the century Chicago, primarily about a brothel in the red light district in Chicago and I though it was interesting. The place was run by two sisters and it was very luxurious and a high-end gentlemans club. I though it was cool so I did a cash set in the theme. Colors are bright, inlay is black.

My tourney set was a second attemp (a much more successful one IMO) to do a set celebrating the 4 generations of men in my family. Grandfather, Dad, Self and Son. 4 kings. The first one was self designed and executed and was very amateurish. This one was much better.

Hey, JamesOwnz! I know you've seen my design already, but I got most of my inspiration for these from Sidepot's Protege chips, which were themselves inspired by the classic Paulson sets.

I don't know how that information could possibly help you, but I hope it does!

I'm sure I'm less artistically inclined than you. I got J5 to turn my inane thoughts into a really nice inlay, and there other great designers on here too, so that shouldn't be a problem. It took me awhile to figure out what I wanted to do for my set, so I just started playing with the chip design tool until it came to me, but I wouldn't order a custom set until I was absolutely sure on the idea.

My inspiration for my set was I like John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, Al Capone, etc as well as gangster/mob related movies. I've always been fascinated by that era and wanted to capture the underground card room feel a little. Pick something you're passionate about and see where it takes you

For my BCC set; I knew I wanted photo quality inlays after seeing the Mabuhay Sun set in the making. I also have a passion for all the big cats with most of my basement decor big cat themed. From there it was as simply as playing around with colors & edgespot combinations.

For my ASM set; I knew I wanted dayglo colors with black inlays. The image came to me when I heard my grandpa was an avid card player. The soldier image on my Gentleman Jack's set is from a ring of his. The set name is his nickname.

Really simple answer for me. My wife. She is one of the best people I know. Great personality, kind, thoughtful, and of course smoking hot. Eight to nine years ago I started thinking about a custom set. There were these affordable china clay chips (don't know who made them specifically). I thought. I can afford these. I asked an HPT'er if he could help me out with them and he said yes. The problem was I didn't have a theme.

Colleen and I were approaching our 20th Anniversary and our 40th birthdays. We were planning our first trip to an all inclusive resort in Mexico. Almost every morning we would take coffee/danishes to the beach and watch the sunrise. Damn near every evening we would have drinks and watch the sunset. This is when it dawned on me. She is the best thing to happen to me. Why not design something beautiful that would help me reminisce about our first major Anniversary celebration. The sunset theme was born.

I've always been partial to solids. I find them clean and sexy.

Here are a few of my vacation photo's that we used to design the inlay.

Here was my first custom set on china clays that were designed approx 7 years ago.

I had the china clay set for about 6 years. Then I became a member of this damn site. With a larger bank roll I decided I needed custom CPC sunset chips. I wanted a sunset theme on the FDL mold. I wanted the inlay to sort of blend into the solid color of the chip. Everyone said @Johnny5 was the one to go to for this. I did, and he blew me away with his design .

As for colors. I simply went with what I liked and what I thought would look cool with a sunset theme.

Had to put my Grandson's name on one of the chips

The Lady Luck Club. This is about as impersonal as one can get.

I was approaching retirement age at the time, and I took a practical approach in coming up with a name/theme that would not be a detriment when it comes time to sell them. Sadly, that time will come eventually. Although the name is quite generic, it was linked with me not long after the chips arrived, at least within this community. I used the same name for my second set and invented a backstory that ties the two themes together.

Depends on the legality. If it's for personal use only it shouldn't be a problem. I would ask for permission first, just to be on the safe side. Like @stocky asked the author for authorization, same as I did in using Mr. Met. I believe there were some members that tried doing a Super Mario Bros. and Pac-Man themed set, don't know what happened to them though.

Ok, I don't think I'd be using actual character art though just colours and fonts if I would have any writing. Maybe not an entire Sonic theme but just maybe every chip represents a different fictional character I like...

Still need a name and inlay logo but this is fun just brainstorming ideas, nice to hear everyones stories as well.

Fooled around with the chip designer for 30 minutes trying to come up with something.. not too impressed really, the Blue is ok to me

Dibs!

I met my wife playing a game that prominently featured the cartoon zombie. Although I had a number of other ideas, the Zombie was far and away the most personal, so we contacted the artist from the game and had him draw up the first cigar smoking, card playing zombie. Full story is in my intro thread here. You can skip down to "Why a Zombie", but it's not that long of a read.

I knew I wanted to do a Western/Saloon motif. One night during a tournament local Max raised from early position and got called by virtually everyone. He made a quip about all the donkeys being tied to the hitching post and it struck me like a gong.

The mule on the logo is also a reference to my mother. She was born in St Louis and my father always referred to her as his Missouri Mule (referencing her stubbornness.)

Here's my chip inspiration story, for the Boardwalk Card Club set I ordered and received 2 months ago:

Some History:
Last year I was able to "burn off" my house mortgage a bit early , & so I insanely decided to instead go back into debt, purchase a 2nd home , a "Beach House" in Long Beach, Long Island New York, ( A "barrier island" just off the southern shore of Long Island), something I've always wanted to do, but thought I never would.. ( & I got a new long term mortgage to continue to pay!)
When I was young, my family rented every full summer in rental bungalows in nearby Rockaway Beach, with its own miles long historical boardwalk , It was great times...
I have been going to the beach with my own family in Long Beach for years now, on weekends & when I can, I Proposed to my wife on the Long Beach Boardwalk ...
... & it's nearly 3 mile long Boardwalk was totally demolished by Hurricane Sandy.
It has been rebuilt now, & looks beautiful, & I have a beach place there! Nearly 3 miles of unobstructed view of the Beach & Atlantic Ocean. The Lamp on the chips is actually patterned from the Lamp posts currently on the Long Beach Boardwalk ..
