As a newbie to collecting chips, I recently acquired the pictured Jack Cincy 500 chip set. They look and feel great. I’m breaking them in next week with a few friends flying down for a fantasy basketball draft (very much looking forward to it!).

And yet I already find myself on here every day looking at more chips and thinking about the next set I’m going to buy. I feel like I started small and at a fairly reasonable price, and am easing my way into the next set/purchase.

Did you make a big leap, price wise, from your first purchase to your second? I’d like for my next set to be rather minty, but I know that comes at a premium. Interested to see how others made the leap and factors taken into selecting your second set after you had the first one.

2nd set was 400 Pharaoh's (480.- in 2007, released 2023)
First set was dice.
In 2007 also we started to play cash game, so i got me a 500 WTHC set (600.-)
I had no need for another set and played these many years, whitout Chiptalk/PCF...

2021 i would get some WTHC 100s to improve my set, when i learnd that Paulson stopped producing chips for public about 10years ago,
and Chiptalk didn't exist anymore...

This year i joined PCF and got me a 700 CPC set as alternative cash game set. Really happy with it!

How fortunate to begin with actual casino chips. I didn't get there until my third set. This goes back 30 years and to the dawn of home computers, the internet and thankfully, eBay.
1. Bicycle Chips (basically Red, White & Blue checkers)
2. Dice Clay Chips
3. Crystal Park Casino

1. Dice circa 2000
2. World Poker Tour circa 2002
3. Paulson Pharaohs circa 2017
4. Paulson WTHC circa 2018

Then I joined this #*@%ing place & I've been hemorrhaging $$$ ever since...

EDIT: Technically these were my first chips (as a kid) so Dice were my 2nd set lol

I had hoyle chips that came 100 in a box from the grocery store. I was in middle school. That was first. Then my buddy in high school had dice chips so I followed suit. Third was a paulson classics set, 500 pcs in college. It was a collective gift from my friends. About $500. I've since expanded that set. It included pharoah and cdi 05 inlays, it's about 1700 pcs now. My next set was a no mold Tina set that has cash and tourney denoms. I then put together a semi custom set of RHC with gear Labels. I'm also putting together a solids set which is about done. Need to mill and get labels for that set. The base is the Carnival $1s. And I have another one that is just for fun, because I like the Horseshoe Cincy $1s. This one needs $5s but I'm not in a rush to finish it.

Excuse my ignorance, but what are TR kings? Pics perhaps?
This should help your ignorance - The magnifying glass in the upper right if your screen will unlock all kinds of knowledge. Here is what it looks like if you are too ignorant to know that

Just click it and type TR King or TRK or variants, hit “search” and become educated.

This works for a lot of other stuff, and it also is free and available to everyone.

First: Cardinal Suits - Cashdrunk
Second: 2-Stripe Twist - Tournaments
Third: Nexgen Las Vegas Sluggos - Cash (Wherever these are now, they have some stories to tell)
Fourth: The Bank from Apache - Micro Cash
Fifth: Marion Heavy Diamonds - No purpose, I just like them.
Other Fifth: I bought a set of leaded TRKs..... 5 years from now.

You're way ahead of me.
Way back when, my second set was dice chips. First set was super diamonds.
I think Paulsons were my 4th set...I'm a late bloomer. :ROFLMAO:
Yeah, I was a slow learner.

#1 -- dice chips (king crowns)
#2 -- labeled sluggers (just as slippery)
#3 -- 9g Las Vegas Pro (much better)
#4 -- 12g #727 Prestige Pro (actually not bad)
#5 -- Dunes Commemoratives (9g plastics)
#6 -- Venerati ceramics
#7 -- Pharaoh's Club china clays
#8 -- President Casino Admiral (primaries)
#9 -- President Casino Admiral (mint)

Which were a "Eureka!" moment. And then the bottom totally fell out of the rabbit hole.

Pretty much everything else since (~60+ sets) has been mint Paulsons, with a few TRK, BCC, ASM, ceramic, and ceramic hybrid sets thrown into the mix. Only have three of those original nine (#1, 3, & 4), plus about a dozen other sets.

First set, Tiki Kings from BR Pro (quality ceramics)
Second set, custom CPC cash set
Third set, LCO (paulson leaded THC)

You did a good thing in starting with a Paulson set (Even if it's RHC) - most people as you can see spend a lot of time and dollars (that they won't get back) on lesser sets.

1st: "sopranos" 6-stripers that I'd had hotstamped.
2nd: Milanos

...then came this thing called "PCF"

3rd: CPC Dragons - tourney/board gaming/limit cash

4th: ABC ceramic semi-customs - tourney
5th: CPC - cash

Nth: a bunch of catch and releases

Nth + 1: CPC - single table tourney (high denom)
Nth + 2: CM CDI - cash
Nth + 3: CM DWSOP - custom - tourney (new this week)

Looming future: CPC cash set.

Dream set that likely will never happen: Aztar hotstamped tourney set.

I had 3 cards mold sets when I first started. Then had a small CPC tournament set that didn't even see the felt before I full sent into a Jack Tournament set.

Since then, I've expanded into a few pricier sets and a few lesser expensive sets until around now where I'm trying to pear down into keeper sets only.

I was were you are now. Built myself a workhorse Jack Cincy set and now bought a HSI set that has never seen the felt.

Look around and really find what you want and what you might need. There are lots of options and most here will help you out with your search. Be prepared tho you start looking at mint or near mint chips they do go way up in price. Good Luck and welcome to PCF.

My first set was a 2000 chip set from $.25 a $5000. Enough for a tourney and cash set. However, they were a cheap set. Basically they were plastic with a metal insert. The stickers on the chips started peeling off.

Two weeks ago I received my second set. 1700 chip set from BR Pro Poker. I bought the Nevada Jacks. Loving them. Enough for a small dealers choice cash game and tournament games. First game is in three weeks. Can’t wait!

wow I need to grab myself a few of the $500s and $1000s. They look slick!

Thank you! As a newbie, one thing I’m trying to figure out is storage. The chips can take up considerable amount of room. I’ve been thinking do I want a set to play with in addition to a set that’ll never get felted? It’s not whether not I need two more sets, but do I even have the room for them. Not to mention my wife is gonna asking some questions lol.

The $1ks are beautiful for sure! Definitely get pricey, but so pretty. Oversize as well!
How do you store the oversized chips? Just different sized racks?
